    Hurricane postpones Illinois State-Florida Atlantic

    NORMAL, Ill. -- Hurricane Jeanne forced the postponement of Saturday's football game between Illinois State and Florida Atlantic.

    A makeup date was not announced Friday.

    The hurricane is expected to reach Florida's east coast by Sunday. Florida Atlantic is in Fort Lauderdale.

    "Florida Atlantic is in the process of closing its university today, while the governor has asked for evacuation in the Fort Lauderdale area," Illinois State senior athletic director Larry Lyons said. "With these prominent actions taking place, it didn't make a whole lot of sense for us to try to fly in there and play on Saturday."

    The next game for Illinois State is Oct. 2 against Indiana State.

    Katrina forces cancellation of Nicholls State-Utah State game

    LOGAN, Utah -- Utah State's season opener Saturday against Nicholls State was canceled Tuesday because Hurricane Katrina has made it too difficult for the players at the Thibodaux, La., school to get back to campus and prepare for the game.

    Thibodaux is about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans.

    The game will not be rescheduled.

    "First and foremost our prayers are with the families and victims of the hurricane," Utah State athletic director Randy Spetman said. "We need to do all we can to support them."

    The Aggies will open the season at Utah on Sept. 10.

    "We are disappointed to not be playing this Saturday," Spetman said. "There is a lot of excitement in the community and we would have liked to have had a great game. We will focus on Utah and then open the home season against UNLV on Sept. 24."

    The last time a Utah State football game was canceled was Oct. 2, 1970, when the Wichita State team was flying to Logan for a game and one of the planes crashed in Colorado.

    Status of Buckeyes' Ross unclear, to dress Saturday

    COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Tailback Lydell Ross is back with Ohio State but it is unclear whether he will play Saturday against Penn State.

    Coach Jim Tressel cleared Ross to practice with the scout team this week and dress for the game.

    A complaint filed last week accused Ross of passing phony money coupons at a local strip club. He was suspended for last week's game against Indiana.

    "We're kind of sitting still, if you will, because there have been no charges," Tressel said Tuesday.

    Tressel declined to say whether Ross would play against Penn State. Freshman Tony Pittman replaced him at tailback and rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown in a 30-7 win over Indiana.

    Concussion could knock Penn State's Mills out of game

    STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State starting quarterback Zack Mills may miss Saturday's game against Ohio State because of the lingering effects of a concussion.

    Mills' concussion was revealed Tuesday, three days after Penn State's 6-4 loss to Iowa.

    Coach Joe Paterno didn't blame the injury for the team's woeful performance on offense against the Hawkeyes. The Nittany Lions managed their lowest offensive output in three years, including the fewest number of first downs in Paterno's 39-year tenure.

    The concussion apparently occurred in the first half, but Mills remained in the game until the third quarter.

    MIAMI -- Florida's season opener Saturday against Middle Tennessee State was postponed because of Hurricane Frances, but the fate of Monday's Florida State-Miami game remained uncertain.

    Florida's game, which was to be played in Gainesville, will be rescheduled Oct. 16, athletic director Jeremy Foley said Thursday.

    Miami officials said Thursday that they still have not decided whether to postpone their nationally televised game against the Seminoles.

    In the NFL, the Miami Dolphins said Thursday they were considering whether to travel to New Orleans for Friday's preseason finale with the Saints. Players are concerned about leaving their families behind to deal alone with the storm.

    In baseball, the Florida Marlins said no decision has been made on their three-game weekend series with the Chicago Cubs, which is scheduled to begin Friday.

    Frances, which is packing winds of 145 mph, is expected to hit the state late Friday or early Saturday.

    Several other sporting events had already been postponed or canceled, including Thursday night's Jacksonville-Florida International football game and Saturday's Gateway Classic between Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville.

    Hampton and Jackson State moved their season opener Saturday from Orlando's Citrus Bowl to Virginia.

    BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU postponed its scheduled football game Saturday night against North Texas because of Hurricane Katrina.

    "The events of yesterday and this morning have made it clear that this is not the time to play a football game," LSU athletic director Skip Bertman said Tuesday. "This is a dire situation that rivals any in the history of our state, and our priorities are on participating in recovery efforts."

    LSU has canceled classes until Sept. 6.

    "The scope of this tragedy is becoming more evident as time passes, and LSU's focus is on assisting in the recovery effort of our state," LSU chancellor Sean O'Keefe said. "LSU is a primary evacuation site and we are not going to conduct any activities that could deter from our mission of assisting in the recovery mission."

    LSU's Carl Maddox Field House is being used a Special Needs Shelter, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center has been designated as a triage unit for medical emergencies, and the Bernie Moore Track will be used as a helicopter landing site.

    The school hoped to announce the date for the postponed game in the next two to three days. LSU is ranked fifth in the country.

    Also, the Tulane-Southern Mississippi game scheduled for Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss., has been moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

    "We have been in contact with the administrators for both universities and we all agree that the focus of our attention should be on the continued safety of the student-athletes, coaches and the lives of those affected by this storm," Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said. "Playing a football game is not our highest priority at this time."

    Tulane's football and women's soccer teams fled New Orleans on Sunday, making a 9½-hour bus ride to Jackson, Miss. They've been practicing at Jackson State.

    In other changes, Nicholls State's game at Utah State on Saturday has been canceled. Nicholls State is located in Thibodaux, La.

    Also, Southern University's game Saturday at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., has been canceled, and Jacksonville's game Thursday night at Hammond -- between New Orleans and Baton Rouge -- has been postponed indefinitely.
