    Suny Brockport Football Defeats #17 Ithaca, 21-20

    Brown scores TD in final minutes, Mariani blocks winning field goal attempt


    BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Senior defensive end Anthony W. Mariani (Milton/Marlboro) blocked a field goal attempt with 40 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter for SUNY Brockport in a 21-20 victory over #17 Ithaca at Special Olympics Stadium Saturday afternoon.

    The Golden Eagles improved to 4-2 while the Bombers fell to 4-2 after the non-league contest.

    Ithaca sophomore kicker Brett Kitenplon (Seminole, FL/Admiral Farragut) attempted a 42-yard field goal with 40 seconds left but Mariani blocked the kick to preserve the Golden Eagles' victory. Junior running back Jon Brown (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) tied the game at 20-20 with 2:58 remaining in the third and sophomore Collin Hoffman (Oneonta) gave Brockport the lead with the point after. The teams were scoreless in the fourth quarter.

    Senior quarterback Bob Darnley (N. Tonawanda/Wheatfield) was 14 for 25 for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and broke the career completions record (393) in the first quarter. Brown had 12 carries for 57 yards and the touchdown. John Walther (Dansville) led the Golden Eagles wtih 12 tackles, two for losses, an interception and a sack. He intercepted Josh Felicetti (Doylestown, PA/Center Bucks East) at the Ithaca 47 with 9:44 remaining in the fourth quarter to stop a Bombers' drive.

    Jamie Donovan (Washington, DC/Sidwell Friends) led the Bombers with a career high 28 yards on 37 carries with a touchdown. He is the first 200-yard Bomber back since 1992 and first Ithaca runner over 100 yards against Brockport since 1998. Felicetti was 16 for 34 with two touchdowns and 187 yards, and had four passes intercepted. Vince Dargush (Amsterdam) led Ithaca with five catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

    Ithaca took over at the Bombers' 32 with 4:42 left, and Donovan rushed for 17 yards on a nine-play drive. Felicetti kept it alive with a 12-yard run on 3rd-and-16 to the Brockport 25, to set up the winning field goal attempt.

    Ithaca took a 7-0 lead in the first when Jeff Welch (Ithaca) caught a nine-yard touchdown from Felicetti with 3:11 left in the period. It capped a 16-play, 80 yard drive that took 6:13. Dargush made it 13-0 (the kick was blocked) just 35 seconds into the second quarter. He caught a 30-yard pass from Felicetti to finish a four-play, 58-yard drive that consumed 1:38.

    Mike Bond (Fairport) put Brockport on the board at 10:18 of the third when he caught a 15-yard scoring strike from Darnley. It convered an eight-play, 47-yard drive that took 4:07. But Donovan ran for a 17 yard score at 7:22 for a 20-7 Ithaca lead with 7:22 left in the first half. Brown closed out the second quarter scoring at 5:22, catching a 27-yard touchdown pass from Darnley to pull the Golden Eagles to within six at 20-14. Brown then scored the final points of the game with his third quarter touchdown run.

    Charlie Stephens (Westport, CT/Staples) and Bryan Steele (Hudson Falls) led the Bombers with 12 tackles each, while Dustin Ross (Salamanca) had three tackles for losses for Ithaca. Walther was joined by solid Brockport defensive efforts by Chris Beh (Webster), who had 11 tackles, and Mark Ferry (Depew/Cheektowaga), with 10 tackles.

    Ithaca hosts Utica next Saturday at 1 p.m. while Brockport travels to Atlantic Central Football Conference rival Wesley for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.

    Golden Eagles fall to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ACFC


    DOVER, DE -- The Wesley Wolverines set up an Atlantic Central Football Conference title match next week with Salisbury University by defeating visiting SUNY Brockport at home 24-17. Sophomore quarterback Chris Warrick was an 18 of 27 for 171 yards with two touchdowns. Wolverine runningback Kevin Nelson rushed for 161 yards on 34 carries. Wesley runs it record to 6-1 on the season, and a perfect 4-0 in Atlantic Central Football Conference play. Brockport fell to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACFC. This is the first time since 1999 that Brockport has lost three games in the regular season.

    Wesley that struck first as kicker Chris Carlton’s 41 yard field goal put the Wolverines ahead with 0:29 seconds left in the first quarter. The score capped a 13 play drive that only went 36 yards.


    Brockport was quick to counter as return man, Mike Maciewjewski (Buffalo/Cheektowaga Central) took the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to the Brockport 48 yard line. Six plays later, quarterback Bob Darnley (N. Tonawanda/Wheatfield) found Mike Mahoney (Webster/Schroeder) for a 4 yard touchdown. Collin Hoffman’s (Oneonta) extra point was good, giving Brockport a 7-3 lead with 13:06 left in the half.


    The two teams traded punts for most of the second quarter until Brockport’s Darnley was intercepted by Wesley’s linebacker Bryan Sorenson. Sorenson returned the pick 19 yards to the Eagles’ 26 yard line. A tough defensive stand forced another Chris Carlton field goal attempt, but this one was blocked by Maciewjewski.


    The Eagles used the swing in momentum to drive the length of the field, but Darnley was intercepted for the second time in the game. Wesley’s defensive star, Rocky Myers hauled in Darnley pass in the endzone for a touchback ending the threat. Both teams came up short in their final two possessions of the first half leaving the score at Brockport 7, Wesley 3.

    Wesley took the second half kickoff and ran a 9 play, 71 yard drive that ended with Ken Busch slamming in a 2 yard touchdown run. Carlton’s extra point put Wesley out in front 10-7.

    On the next drive, Brockport stalled and attempted a 47 yard field goal that fell short.


    Wesley continued to control the ball, and marched 70 yards in 11 plays to extend its lead to nine. Warrick found tight end Josh Kline in the endzone for a 6 yard touchdown. Carlton’s extra point went wide giving Wesley a 16-7 lead with 3:47 left in the third quarter.


    Later in the fourth quarter, Hoffman made good on a 28 yard attempt, bringing the Eagles’ closer to the Wolverines at 16-10.

    Luke connects on school record four touchdown passes

    BROCKPORT, NY – Freshman quarterback Zack Luke ( Cambridge, NY/ Cambridge) threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns as the Golden Eagles stunned Wesley College, 47-0, in an Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) game Saturday in Brockport.

    Wesley (7-1 overall, 3-1 ACFC) came into the game as the 25 th ranked team in NCAA Division III and were held to minus 3 yards rushing and just 87 yards through the air.

    Brockport (3-4, 3-1) opened the scoring with a Brian Wise (Newfane, NY/Newfane) 15-yard touchdown run as Luke led the team on a 12-play, 69-yard drive midway through the first quarter. Wise finished with 96 yards rushing, 51 yards receiving and 49 yards on returns for 196 all-purpose yards.

    Three minutes later Wise was on the receiving end of a 39-yard Luke scoring pass to put the Golden Eagles up 14-0. Luke was 13-of-22 passing for 263 yards and tied the school record with the four touchdown passes in a game. The effort tied Jim Higgins who tossed four scoring passes in a game twice in 1990.

    Wesley answered with a 13-play drive that stalled at the 10 yard line and the Wolverines had a 27-yard field goal attempt blocked by Dale Buck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) as time ran out in the first quarter.

    Brockport scored two more times in the second quarter as Adam Lanctot (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) booted a 21-yard field goal and Luke completed a 39-yard scoring pass to Matt McCormick (Peru, NY/Peru) giving the Golden Eagles a 24-0 lead at halftime.

    In the third quarter, Brockport took advantage of Wesley mistakes to tack on another 16 points. Steve Marriott ( Fairport, NY/Fairport) recovered a Wesley fumble at the 45 yard line and three plays later Luke found Mike Mahoney (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) in the endzone for a five-yard scoring pass. Mahoney led all Brockport receivers with 89 yards on five catches.

    The next Wesley drive was two incomplete passes and a quarterback sack pushing the Wolverines to their own 13 yard line. The first Brockport play after the punt was a 42-yard scoring pass from Luke to fullback Robert Miles ( Niagara Falls, NY/ Niagara Falls).

    Near the end of the third quarter, Wesley punter, Jake Reuter (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) tried to recover a snap that sailed over his head and ended up kicking the ball out of the endzone for a Brockport safety as the Golden Eagles went ahead 40-0.

    Brockport added a Garet Lynch ( Valley Stream, NY/ Springfield Gardens) five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the final score.

    Senior John Walther ( Dansville, NY/Dansville) led the Brockport defense with 11 tackles while Marriott added nine stops, one sack, a fumble recovery and a pass break-up.

    Walther notches sixth straight double digit tackle performance

    BROCKPORT, NY— John Walther ( Dansville, NY/Dansville) registered his sixth consecutive game with at least 10 tackles, but the SUNY Brockport football team (2-3; 2-1 ACFC) dropped a 42-17 decision to 13 th ranked Ithaca College (4-0) this afternoon at Butterfield Stadium.

    Entering the game, Brockport had posted a 4-2 record against the Bombers in the last six years, including last year’s 21-20 victory in Special Olympics Stadium.

    After a scoreless first quarter, the Golden Eagles took a 7-0 lead with 10:15 left in the half, when quarterback A.J. Covella (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) connected with Mike Mahoney (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) from 10-yards out for the touchdown.

    Ithaca responded with a four-yard touchdown run by Jamie Donovan to knot the score at 7-7.

    SUNY Brockport regained the lead, 10-7, with 1:25 remaining in the half on a 28 yard field goal from Adam Lanctot (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon), but Ithaca took the lead for good less than a minute later when Josh Felicetti fired a 13-yard touchdown pass to Dan Ross.

    The Bombers pushed their lead to 21-10 in the third quarter, when Felicetti tossed his second touchdown pass of the game to Justin Esposito from 20-yards out.

    A five-yard touchdown plunge by Brian Wise (Newfane, NY/Newfane) capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive, to pull Brockport to within 21-17, but the Golden Eagles could come no closer, as Ithaca scored three consecutive touchdowns, including an 85-yard interception return by Tom Blumenauer to seal the victory.

    Covella paced the Golden Eagles offensively, rushing for a team-high 65 yards on 16 carries, and connecting on 24 of his 34 passing attempts for one touchdown and two interceptions. Wise churned out 163 All-purpose yards, with 36 rushing yards, 34 receiving yards, and 93 yards on kick returns. Mahoney made four catches for 29 yards. Walther recorded a team-best 11 tackles, while Joe Pereira ( Rochester, NY/ Greece Athena) made 10 stops.

    The SUNY Brockport football team will be back in action next Saturday at St. John Fisher, with a 7 p.m. kickoff time.

    Golden Eagles improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in ACFC


    FROSTBURG, MD — Senior quarterback Bob Darnley (N. Tonawanda/Wheatfield) completed 14 of 27 passes for 251 yards and a pair of touchdown passes and the SUNY Brockport defense held Frostburg State to 56 total yards in the second half as the Golden Eagles handed the Bobcats a 24-10 loss in Atlantic Central Football Conference action Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

    Brockport improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACFC with the win, while Frostburg State had its nine-game league winning streak snapped and fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

    The Golden Eagles looked to strike quickly when Darnley hooked up with Matt McCormick (Peru/Peru Central) for a 42-yard gain to the Bobcat 33 on the third play of the game. However, back-to-back sacks by senior James Clash (Baltimore, Md./City College) and junior Chris Lentz (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) helped turn back the threat.

    FSU came out firing, moving from its own 20 to the Brockport eight behind a burst of short passes and strong running by senior Mike Kitchen (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon). But, a holding penalty negated a Kitchen gain to the two, and the Bobcats settled for a 35-yard field goal by Chris Martin (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) and a 3-0 lead.

    Brockport had a chance to tie the game on its next possession but Marc Menchetti’s (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) 37-yard field goal try was wide right. FSU continued to move the ball well, marching from its own 20 to the Golden Eagle 20, but Josh Keeney (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) was stripped of the ball and Brockport recovered at its 16.

    The Golden Eagles took the lead for good on their ensuing drive, needing just six plays to march 84 yards. Freshman Dan Lopez (Lancaster/St. Mary's ) provided a spark with runs of 15 and 23 yards before Darnley hit Mike Mahoney (Webster/Schroeder) for a 25-yard gain to the Bobcat four. Junior Jon Brown (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) found the endzone on the next play and Menchetti’s extra point gave the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead with 10:33 left in the half.

    Brockport opened a 14-3 cushion when Darnley hit a leaping Kevin Beaumont (Rochester/W. Irondequoit) in the back of the endzone with 2:46 remaining in the half. The Bobcats countered in the final moments of the second frame as sophomore Jimmy Ward (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) found senior Adam J. Synder (Scottdale, Pa./South Moreland) for a 27-yard scoring strike to pull FSU within 14-10 with 37 seconds to play.

    Brockport had an opportunity to add to its lead on the final play of the half but Menchetti’s 38-yard field goal sailed wide. The Golden Eagles had another chance to take control in the closing minutes of the third, moving to the Bobcat two, but the FSU defense turned in a pair of stops behind the line of scrimmage and forced Brockport...

    Defense comes up big for Brockport

    BROCKPORT, NY—The SUNY Brockport football team (2-2; 1-1 ACFC) limited visiting Frostburg State to just 21 rushing yards, and picked up a 19-14 victory this afternoon at Special Olympics Stadium.

    The win was the sixth straight for Brockport over the Bobcats, as the Golden Eagles improved to 10-4 in the series.

    The Golden Eagles forced a Bobcat punt after six plays on Frostburg’s first possession of the game, and capped a nine-play, 87-yard drive when A.J. Covella (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) hit Kevin Beaumont (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) with a 13 –yard scoring toss with 7:19 remaining in the opening quarter.

    SUNY Brockport added to their lead with 8:45 remaining in the first half, when Adam Lanctot ( Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) hit a 37-yard fieldgoal.

    The Golden Eagles added another score towards the end of the opening half, when Covella found Mike Mahoney (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) kneeling in the endzone from 13-yards out, sending Brockport into the intermission wit a 17-0 lead.

    Frostburg responded in the third quarter, taking the opening kickoff 87-yards on nine plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jimmy Ward.

    Late in the third quarter, after Brockport turned the ball over on downs at the Frostburg one-yard line, John Walther ( Dansville, NY/Dansville) trapped Ward in the endzone for a safety, pushing the Golden Eagle’s lead to 19-7.

    Frostburg added a final score with just 2:21 remaining, when Ward found Mike Perlozzo on a two-yard touchdown pass.

    The Bobcats nearly had one final possession, when Kevin Culbert sacked Covella on third-and -10 at the Frostburg 41, but a roughing the kicker penalty on the ensuing punt allowed Brockport to run the clock out to seal the win.

    The Golden Eagles netted 357 yards of offense, and limited Frostburg to 265. Brockport outgained the Bobcats 77-21 on the ground, and 280-244 through the air. Each team turned the ball over once.

    Covella completed 21-of-30 passes, with one interception and two touchdowns, and rushed for 47 yards. Brian Wise ( Newfane, NY/Newfane) led the ground game with 50 yards. McCormick had nine receptions for 91 yards. Walther was the team’s leading with 13, including two sacks. Joe Pereira ( Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Tim Weber (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) also had a pair of stops behind the line of scrimmage.

    Ward connected on 16 of his 33 passing attempts, for one touchdown, one interception, and was sacked three times. Fred Howe snared four receptions for 18 yards. Culbert recorded 12 tackles, including five for losses, and two sacks.

    The SUNY Brockport football team will be back in action next Saturday at Ithaca, with a 1 p.m. kickoff time.
