BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU center Ben Wilkerson will miss the remainder of the 2004 season with a ruptured tendon in his left knee.

Wilkerson was injured in the fourth quarter of LSU's 24-7 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday. He was expected to have surgery to repair the patella tendon on Monday. Wilkerson, a senior, has started 41 games at LSU and is one of the top centers in the country.

Head coach Nick Saban also said Sunday that freshman wide receiver Xavier Carter will be sidelined at least four weeks with a broken collar bone.

Carter has caught five passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State tight end Donnie Carter will miss the upcoming season with a torn right knee ligament, coach Bobby Bowden said Saturday.

Carter tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a scrimmage Wednesday. He will have surgery within the next two weeks.

"You hate to lose him because he was making good progress and playing good football for us," Bowden said.

The 6-foot-4 Carter played extensively last season, sharing time with starters Paul Irons and Matt Henshaw. He had five catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.

A decision to move a player to back up Irons, Henshaw and junior walk-on Matt Root will be made next week, Bowden said.

Henshaw, who injured his collarbone during Wednesday's scrimmage, has returned. Root is practicing with broken finger.

Mississippi State QB Conner out three weeks with knee injury
    by DJRamFan

    SportsLine.com wire reports

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi State quarterback Omarr Conner will miss at least three weeks after spraining a ligament in his right knee in a 51-0 loss to LSU on Saturday.

Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom said Monday that tests showed Conner sprained his medial collateral ligament and won't return before the Bulldogs' home game against No. 16 Florida on Oct. 23.

"That's the earliest we can get him back," Croom said.

With Conner out, junior Kyle York will start Saturday against Vanderbilt. Because York's shoulder is not 100 percent after offseason surgery, freshman Mike Henig will also play.

Conner, who played receiver last season for the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-2 Southeastern Conference) is 50-of-89 for 509 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions this season. York is 13-of-27 for 132 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in three appearances.

    SportsLine.com wire reports

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State quarterback Josh Swogger broke a bone in his right foot, ending his sophomore season.

The injury will require surgery, Washington State athletic department spokesman Rod Commons said Monday.

Swogger's backup is freshman Alex Brink, who played in two games this season, completing 13-of-25 pass attempts for 278 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Freshman Gary Rogers, who hoped to redshirt this season, will be Brink's backup.

Swogger already was playing with a partially torn ligament in his right knee and a sore ankle.

He completed 91 of 193 pass attempts for 1,283 yards, with 13 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He ranks seventh in the Pac-10 in passing, averaging 208.7 yards per game.

MRI shows ACL tear in running back Lumpkin's left knee
    by DJRamFan
    Aug. 10, 2004
    SportsLine.com wire reports

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia running back Kregg Lumpkin, who was expected to start, will be lost for the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee during a non-contact drill.

"I'm disappointed with what has happened to Kregg," coach Mark Richt said Tuesday. "He had worked extremely hard getting ready for this season. Now he'll have to postpone it until next year. But the good news is that he can get a redshirt year and still have three years to play."

Lumpkin tore his anterior cruciate ligament Monday, the team's first day of practice. He had an MRI on Monday night. The normal recovery period for a torn ACL is about nine months.

Lumpkin was second on the team with 523 yards rushing as a freshman last year, despite missing the first two games with a hamstring injury. After a strong spring, he was listed as the starter entering preseason practice.

Lumpkin rushed for 90 yards and the game-winning touchdown in Georgia's Capital One Bowl victory over Purdue.

Michael Cooper, who led the team with 673 yards rushing last season, likely will move up to the top spot on the depth chart. Running back Tony Milton, who is recovering from offseason leg surgery, should also compete for playing time with freshmen Danny Ware and Thomas Brown and senior Albert Hollis.
