  • 2010 NFL Draft / Free Agent QB Not in round 1

Ok, here is the theory. With having 6 major needs to fill, I am just wondering what other board members think about this.

I feel there are only 5 - 6 that definately need to draft a QB in round 1.

Titans, Skins, Jax, SF, Oak, like 4 teams on the border.

Here lies a chance for guys like Teabow and Pike to maybe slip into round 2.

Pike's stock will jump come combine I am sure.

Also, there are Qb's in Free Agency Vick, Qinn, etc.

Lastly, Bulger may have no other option than to play here for alot less money.

SO, why would it be a good thing to draft a QB in the top 6 ?

    I think it is wrong!!!!

We will dump a ton of money into a weak armed QB. None seem to have rocket arms this year, and none have the super-mold of Sanchez.

I think 3 should only consider these 3 options in round 1 for a top 6 pick this off-season.

    1. WR -- Dez Bryant type
    2. DE -- Outside rusher/freak atheltic type
    3. OL -- Sure it up for the QB

We could always trade up if a guy slips late in the First round. Especially with so many teams having the QB positon filled I think the is our best option.

The only way I could see us justify picking a QB top 5-6 this draft is by making 2 big signings in free agency. Say we get a WR and a OLman in free agency then we could go something like. QB, DE, DE, SSLB, etc in draft.

    What are your thoughts?>

agree or disagree -- maybe you can swing me?

I am open to all arguements, except the fact that you are in love with one of these college QB's because none are Elway/Aikmen type coming out.

If you want to keep Bulger -- Vote NO -- I forgot to mention that in poll.

I have said it before, I just dont feel comfortable about putting a rookie qb with the pressure of helping a franchise that is underwater. I would love for the FO to make a move for Kolb but i doubt the eagles give him up easy. But for sure dont take a qb in the first round, to many have been complete bust's in my opinion.

Agreed, Plus a Big Time WR like Dez Bryant

or a freak athelte to run and blitz all over on defensive

        like

        DE George Selvie South Florida

        Brandon Spikes, Jr. Florida

        Eric Norwood, Jr. South Carolina
        Navarro Bowman, Soph. Penn St
        Navarro Bowman, Soph. Penn St

just off the top of my head

Every year, there are statements like this. Every year, there are people that hate on Round 1 rookie QB's, and every year, we get to watch them on Sunday torching up opposing defenses.

Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Matthew Stafford, Josh Freeman, Mark Sanchez, they were all criticized and were proclaimed not worthy of being high first round picks or even first round picks at all.

Now, we get to see them throw lights out.

Have you seen Jake Locker and Jimmy Clausen's throwing power? Guess not.

Dez Bryant is suspended for the whole year, are we going to take a risk and draft him when he hasn't played for that long?

We've invested way too many high draft picks on o-linemen. It's time for us to get soem playmakers or leaders.

IMO, Jimmy Clausen, Sam Bradford, Jake Locker, and maybe even Jevan Snead, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow would be better than Kevin Kolb.

too many have been Busts, but as of late there have been more sucess stories than busts. Some take more time than others, but look at the top QBs in the league the majority are high first rounders with exceptions like Drew Brees, Schaub, and Brady. Some have had slow starts but thy pan out. The young non 1st rounder Franchise guys guys like Derek Anderson, Trent Edwards, Tavaris Jackson, Brodie Croyle, Derek Anderson, and Kellen Clemens have been bigger Busts than guys like Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, and Vince Young all you probably have less starts than all those guys. IMO you have to throw them in the fire give them time. One of the reasons Quinn, Leinart, and Young haven't succeeded is because the franchise is because instead of letting these guys take there lumps they have put in Vets like Kurt Warner, Kerry Collins, and Derek Anderson. Now that those guys haven't gotten time they are way behind the curve with the older guys declining. You can't keep a vet in there that long history shows it just impedes rookie progress. Peyton Manning, Rothlessberger, and Ryan all thrown into the fire up and down, but are clearly franchise guys. Guys like Eli, Aaron Rodger, and Rivers have had vets like Kurt Warner, Drew Brees, and Favre ahead of them, but when it was time those guys to go their Franchise made the move let them go and put those young guys in. All have played well since those vets have moved on.

Philip Rivers, Eli manning, Peyton Manning, Ben Rothlesberger, Donavan Mcnabb, Kyle Orton, Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan. All young first rounders some have taken longer than other to progress but all are Franchise QBs. We need to go out and get ours immediately, I'll take that chance anyday

The key is you gotta take your Franchise guy build a good situation around him and handle when you start him properly.

we shouldnt follow history if its good or bad but pick the B.P.A at a position of need.

i dont want us to select a QB in the top 5 at this point because i believe that only Bradford would be good enough for that spot. if we go for a QB in the first now that Bradford has a banged up shoulder..it better be after trading down and getting more picks.

my top 3 at this point are (if we stay where we likely to end up picking)

              1.Bryant
              2.McCoy(Gerald not Colt)
              3.Dunlap.

1.Bryant Number 1 overall? When i see a top 5 pick WR i'm thinking Calvin Johnson, do I see that in Bryant and his spread that inflates his stats, no I don't. His hands are inconsistent sometimes miraculous sometimes horrible. Doesn't have top flight speed, but he does make up for it with his physical style. He is a good returner. With that all said he isn't worth a top 5 pick IMO he isn't even better than Crabtree.

                2. Mccoy isn't even the best DT, in the draft that is Nadamukong Suh

                3. Dunlap majorly overated people are comparing him to Mario Williams who was ten times more productive. 1 sack against Troy this year doesn't impress me. Get real people not mario williams

at this point that is my top 3 of who id pick...i dont see us picking 1st overall.

i like Bryant...i believe he is the B.P.A at a position of need.

its debatable on who the best DT is..i believe McCoy has better upside than the Nebraska boy..but i wouldn`t grumble over taking Suh either..

Dunlap is a bit of an afterthought where ive just thought of a good DE prospect to add into the mix. i wouldnt mind changing him for someone else.

I strongly disagree with you here that Bryant is the best receiver available.

Damian Williams from USC is the number one receiver.

                    Damian Williams > Dez Bryant
                    Better hands
                    Quicker
                    Faster
                    A lot more polished
                    Stronger
Fits more into a west coast offense
                    WAY BETTER ROUTE RUNNER
                    Very elusive
                    Can generate huge Y.A.C
                    Tremendous ball skills
Can consistently find soft spots in coverage
Finds the ball at the highest point
                    Amazingly quick feet

This guy is the real deal. Besides, Bryant is now projected to be a lower first round pick. We are guaranteed a top 5 pick this year. No way are we picking Bryant that early.

Damian Williams is the only other player I would agree on getting if we don't grab Jimmy Clausen. Although, Suh and McCoy are coming pretty close.

IMO, McCoy and Suh are both equally great DT's, although Suh is a bit bigger.

On that topic, if LaGarret Blount is allowd to have an NFL career after his mix up with Boise State, I'd love to see that guy in our backfield. That kid is a monster.

I have. Locker isn't an NFL QB -- he may play baseball anyway.

Clausen is an NFL talent, and I feel him and Tony Pike are probably the best 2 QB's for NFL.

I just don't know if we want to invest #2 or #3 pick money this year on a QB.

To answer the question, I think it's way too early in the process to say either way. I'm not opposed to either avenue at this point. Sorry if that's straddling the fence, but it's just too early in the process to say "Yes we should do this" without a BIG asterisk by it.

                            Anyways...

No interest in Vick. Quinn will only hit free agency if the Browns release him, he's signed through 2010. Barring some releases, the free agent market for QBs next season won't be great.

I would take amazing accuracy over amazing arm every day of the week, but maybe that's just me. And Super-Mold Sanchez is still unproven, and has fallen back to Earth the last three weeks. Not saying he won't be good, but the hype has worn off a bit.

Are the Raiders watching JaMarcus Russell throw lights out against teams? Have the Titans got what they wanted out of Vince Young, the Cardinals in Matt Leinart? It's easy to just list the guys who looked like they're on their way to good careers. The point is there are a number who haven't panned out for their club. I agree that every year, first round QBs are scrutinized perhaps more than any other prospects and many of them work out. But not all of them go on to success, and citing the failures is a legitimate concern.

Top ten QBs in the league right now when ranked by QB rating are Brees (2nd), Peyton (1st), Favre (2nd), Big Ben (1st), Rodgers (1st), Schaub (3rd), Eli (1st), Orton (4th), Brady (6th), Ryan (1st). So it's split pretty evenly between first rounders and non-first rounders, no majority.

Also, two of the five first rounders on the list were taken outside the top ten (Big Ben, Rodgers).

I don't buy this one, sorry. And it's mostly because of one guy you brought up - Aaron Rodgers. Three years and zero starts before Favre moved on, then Rodgers comes in and shines.

Also, Leinart played in 12 games and started 11 as a rookie. Young started 28 games his first two seasons. It's tough to make the case that Arizona and Tennessee didn't let these guys take some lumps right out of the gate.

If anything, this illustrates success stories from both schools of thought - play immediate, or wait your turn. Neither have been proven to be the right way of doing things, so it's just going to depend on the situation.

"No way" are we picking Bryant? It's October. How can anyone say anything about the draft with any certainty?

Bryant is now projected to be a lower first round pick? First of all, even when the draft rolls around, there's usually not a consensus about where a guy is projected to go, at least not specific enough to say what part of what round. But again, it's October! How can you say something like this and expect it to remain true for the next six months?

Dez Bryant is suspended. Which means he does not play anymore, which definitely hurts his stock. When he sits out for the rest of the season, does that warrant him a top 5 pick? Especially if he's going to be out that long?

So, if we do not trade down, it's fair to say that we will not be drafting Dez Bryant with our first round, top 5 pick.
