  • Who's in your five?

If you had to name 5 college players that you think the Rams should consider with their first pick, who would they be. I'm not concerned with order of preference, just list 5 guys in alphabetical order who you'd want to be on the Rams' draft board.

    Mine:

    Bradford, Sam (QB, Oklahoma)
    Clausen, Jimmy (QB, Notre Dame)
    Locker, Jake (QB, Washington)
    Spiller, C.J. (RB, Clemson)
    Suh, Ndamukong (DT, Nebraska)

    Re: Who's in your five?

I guess it goes without saying that these suggestions depend entirely on where we land in the draft:

    Bradford, Sam (QB, Oklahoma)
    Bryant, Dez (WR, Oklahoma State)
    Mays, Taylor (S, USC)
    McCoy, Gerald (DT, Oklahoma)
    Suh, Ndamukong (DT, Nebraska)

    honorable mention:

    Jones, Arthur (DT, Syrcause)

Assume the Rams have one of the top 10 picks.

I only have 3 at the moment. Clausen, Bradford and Suh.

I really like Derrick Morgan the DE out of Georgia Tech and I also like Carlos Dunlap out of Florida.

            No particular order

            1. Gerald McCoy DT OU
            2. Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska (the N on the Nebraska helmet for them stands for Knowledge.....old joke)
            3. Carlos Dunlap DE Florida
            4. Eric Berry FS Tennessee
            5. Arrelious Benn WR Illinois

And of course I didn't read your whole first post and it did my way.

Interesting you guys are picking RBs. Depending on FA's, I think we should wait until at least the 3rd/4th round to pick up a RB.

                Bradford

                Clausen

                Suh

                Bryant

                Dunlap

Still torn as to whether or not take the QB with the first pick or wait and take him in the 2nd round, if we don't I'd hope we go Defense.
                  Jimmy Clausen QB Notre Dame
                  Carlos Dunlap DE Florida
                  Jake Locker QB Warshington

I have Dunlap on my short list but for some reason, people seem to think he's horrible and nothing more than a combine type player. I don't see it at all. I wouldn't be overly upset with anyone on your list.

If the Rams stay at pick #1, there are really only 4 candidates.
                                by AvengerRam_old
If the Rams don't trade down from the first pick in the draft, their choice really comes down to four players.

The Frontrunner: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
I call Suh the frontrunner because he is the player that most people consider the best prospect in the draft. While I obviously don't have any inside information from the Rams, I certainly can see a coach like Steve Spagnuolo, who built a champion defense on the strength of the D line, favoring Suh.

The Dark-Horse Candidate: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
While he is currently overshadowed by Suh, he is still considered a top 3-5 pick. If Suh slides during the evaluation period, while McCoy shines, he could rise to the top.

The Cult Favorite: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
Those who like Clausen really like him. In my opinion, his size is potentially an issue, and I'll be curious how he is reported as comporting himself in interviews. That said... QBs can rise quickly in the eyes of scouts, coaches and personnel guys. Just ask Mark Sanchez.

The Forgotten Candidate: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Bradford may have been the first pick in the 2009 draft had he come out. Now he stands as the poster child for those who advocate early departures from college. Still, if he passes all the tests he'll be put through in the next few months, teams could fall in love again with his 2008 game tapes.

There are other top prospects who I really don't think the Rams would take No. 1 overall. I have Derrick Morgan rated #2 on my draft board, but I really don't see the Rams passing on Suh (or McCoy) to take him. Eric Berry and Joe Haden are A list DBs who will both go in the top 10 selections, but again, not to the Rams at No. 1. The Rams may like C.J. Spiller (as do I), but they can't afford to take a RB at No. 1 unless they trade Jackson, which isn't likely to happen. Finally, Dez Bryant, though a top WR prospect, does not appear to be a guy who would go that high.

So, in my book... its one of these four players or a trade down (which I don't expect to happen).

Anyone think there are more than four candidates?

                                Suh or Clausen/Bradford?
                                by sakl18
The main debate for the upcoming draft is if the Rams will take Suh or a QB, with Clausen currently having the edge over Bradford. Although Suh would improve the defense, you can't win in this league without a solid or elite QB. Here are the top teams from 2009 and their QB's.

                                1) Indianapolis - Peyton Manning
                                2) New Orleans - Drew Brees
                                3) San Diego - Phillip Rivers
                                4) Minnesota - Brett Favre
                                5) Dallas - Tony Romo
                                6) Green Bay - Aaron Rodgers
                                7) Philadelphia - Donovan McNabb
                                8) Arizona - Kurt Warner
                                9) Cincinnati - Carson Palmer
                                10) New England - Tom Brady

As you can see, the top 10 teams have arguably the top 10 Quarterback's in the league. As it has been posted before, our defense can compete in this league. However, our offense can't. If we take Suh, we will be looking at another top 5 pick again next year. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the Rams have a player like Suh. But if we grab him, we would lose a shot at a franchise QB like Clausen. Having Clausen would take a lot of pressure off of Jackson as teams wouldn't be able to consistantly stack the box against him. Not only that, but Clausen spent three years in a pro-style offense under Charlie Weiss, who has been a successful OC in the NFL.

If you look at the numbers that Clausen put up, they are spectacular. He finished the year with a 68% completion percentage, 3722 yards, 28 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He did all of that with a terrible offensive line (he's already starting to fit in!) and virtually no running game (which he will have with the Rams).

The two biggest flaws that people seem to pick out in him are his attitude and his carrer record (13-18). when you look at the win loss record, it is no fault of his own. During his time in Notre Dame, he was playing with no defense. With the points he put up and the level he played at, the losses were not his fault. His character is the other issue. Although he is cocky and abrassive, can't the same be said in Phillip Rivers?

IMO, Spags and Devaney need to take Clausen to move this team forward. In the NFL you can't win without a QB, and I guarantee you that the front office is aware of it (they did spend a year with Bulger, Boller and Null* starting at QB).

*This isn't a shot at Null, I realize that he was a rookie, and I have high hopes for him as the future backup of the Rams.
