  • A trade-down idea so crazy, it just might work!

Here's a name that intrigues me: Jason Campbell.

    Hear me out.

    First, the scenario.

Let's say the Rams have the 3rd pick (entirely possible with Tampa and Cleveland also having only 1 win, and a 2 win Detroit having a loss to the Rams).

Let's also say that the Redskins are picking around 7th or 8th (also entirely possible).

Now, it has been widely reported that Washington was in the market for Jay Cutler, and also shopped Campbell last year in the hope of drafting Mark Sanchez. Presume that this year they have their eye on a QB (Clausen, Bradford, Locker) who is still there at #3, but probably won't be there at #7 or #8.

As for the Rams, let's assume that, by the third pick, Suh and another tempting prospect (a QB, G.McCoy) is gone.

Would a trade down to acquire Campbell make sense?

Looking at Campbell alone, he has some promise. He's impoved in pretty much every statistical category each year, and he hasn't exactly had the greatest skill players around him. He also would be a good West Coast offense fit.

A trade like that (which might, I acknowledge, require that the Rams throw in a mid-late round pick to even things out) could allow the Rams to (a) get a 27 year old QB who is on the rise and ready to start, and (b) use the 7th/8th pick to take a player like Dez Bryant, Eric Berry, Derrick Morgan, C.J. Spiller or Terrence Cody.

Like I said... its so crazy it just might work.

Yea, that could work. It would take the mind of Snyder to do this and that's a perfect combo.

That's a big key. Someone with the history and craziness to strike up a deal like that. I'm sure Campbell wouldn't mind the change of scenery either.

(Not suggesting that this deal will happen)

The Skins would have to throw more our way than Campbell. Honestly, if they are moving up to get a QB, the odds of them keeping Campbell post draft are less than 20%. Why wouldn't we just try and pick him up as a free agent at a lesser contract? Kyle Orton will likely be a free agent and he's just as good as Campbell and we get to keep the #3 pick.

You think that Campbell would not be enough compensation for the Rams to move down 4-5 spots?

Um.... yeah.... I'm going to have to disagree with you there, Sparky.

A good idea, as campbell has experience in a west-coast-esque offense; however he is a free agent at the end of this season, and i dont think the Redskins have shown much interest in bringing him back.

He could be a good free agent pick up by us, without having to trade down. But i dont know if his free agent status is different because of the new CBA issues (any players with less than 6 years of experience will be considered restricted free agents, not unrestricted. please correct me if im wrong).

When I think of a franchise quarterback for the future of the Rams, Jason Campbell isn't one that comes to mind for me. I'd rather go in a different direction. Preferably through the draft. Still, the idea does have merit. A 2 for 1 deal.

He's currently set to be a RFA, so the Skins don't need to let him go without compensation. It would be, in a sense, a sign-and-trade scenario.

Ah, understood. He did look sharp against New Orleans yesterday, though I would still be partial to Locker if he were available.

I think it is a good idea that wont happen. The scenario would have substantial benefit fot the rams. And I do think Campbell is a QB that hasnt exactly been given a fair chance. But more then likely it wont happen, I think spags will just draft a QB. I would however rather take campbell then a rookie.

EDIT: Isnt campbell from auburn? If so thats a plus for me

Campbell will be a restricted Free agent in a uncapped year, but in an capped year he will be unrestrcited. A capped year is the best possible scenario for the Rams, with our cap space and the higher amount of UFA's available.

Just Campbell doesn't do alot for me. Campbell and probably a mid round pick. We talk about trade downs every year, and you just dont see it in the top 3 and I don't think we will see it again this year.

If a new CBA is reached and he ends up a UFA, then I would consider signing him (of course, other teams would as well).

Mike Vick will also probably be available next year. I'm just throwing that out there because I'm not completely sold on any of the QB's in this year's draft and I think he could be a decent temporary solution at QB and that would allow the Rams to draft Suh who I think is the best player in the draft. Vick learned the WCO this year and he lead some good offenses when he was in Atlanta.

I don't know that the Rams are going anywhere fast and I would rather put up with the growing pains of a 21-23 year old quarterback than have Jason Campbell be 29 or 30 before there is any talent around him.

I don't think Washington would go for it. Now, if we threw in a marginal player with an outrageously high price tag, they would jump all over it.
