  • Ron Bartell and DB questions

IMO it seemed last year RB was a bright spot on the defense, but this year it seems if a ball is thrown his way its either a 1rst down (pass interference) or a touchdown,(he did have a breakup last game). Does he have an injury or something or am I just so down-troddin on this team I dont notice the good he does. Also other than Fletcher (how serious is his injury, I thought he was lookin pretty good) who do we have that can be a decent corner?
Thanks for the info ( ahead of time)

There is no rush by our defensive line. He can be a stud for us if we just applied pressure.

We have Justin King, Jonathan Wade, and Bradley Fletcher that can compliment him. I'm not sure if they have long-term plans for Quincy Butler, but I think King or Fletcher would be good to compliment Bartell.

He's been battling through a thigh injury this entire year.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

let Oj walk ....get pick(s) for him.... upgrade the d line (with spags' expertise) assuming we dont get the number one pick.....2n pick take Eric Berry ...ultimate playmaker...and were set.... most of the dominatiin d line men in this league r from later rounds anyways... Secondary should improve drastically

i think the secondary is pretty set..the only way i see it changing is possibly a later round corner pick or trading down in the first to pick up berry.

CB`s are like the QB`s of the D..if each of their lines dont win the battle in the trenches they essentially rowing up river with a toothpick.

like already said...Bartell has played every snap this year whilst impaired by an injury...personally if i was a Pro Footballer and i was carrying an injury all year..i wouldnt play all year..cause i know that you`ll never get thanked for your efforts but you will have your performances on the field torn apart for it.(not having a go at you Dave..just saying that is the nature of the beast..its happened since Pro Sports began)

Fletcher has a serious Knee injury...he has torn two muscles in his knee..both have been named on here before so check them out if you interested..cant recall them off the top of my head..but basically,he has had one operation..needs to let that heal..then have a second operation. theres a chance he may never play again..tho i dont know the odds..im thinking he will come back from it someday but may have to change position to FS..where he can avoid all that quick twisting and turning that CB`s do on almost every play.
that wouldnt be too bad..i think he could become a good FS in time (perhaps take over from Atogwe in two or three years) he certainly has some of the tools needed for the position...and although Atogwe is a playmaker he certainly has flaws to his game in some areas.

You said most and dominating come in later rounds? Care to prove that. Most D-lineman in later rounds do not dominate and every once in awhile teams will find that RARE Diamond but that is the exception to the rule.

The team needs OJ (what will be his status next year free agent?) alot more than they need some extra later round pick next year. This team has very limited talent and can not afford to let known talent go for later round picks.

                Go Rams....

I think OJ has some holes in his game maybe, but I hope we keep him. Hell I liked Chillar when he was here .I'd just hate to see ANOTHER ram go somewhere else and become a star AGAIN. Ofcourse Bruce would of retired a ram if it where up to me.

Bartell was playing with a thigh injury that hurt him for pretty much the entire first half of the season, he's probably still feeling lingering effects right now.

First of all, stop saying "lmao". There's nothing to laugh your ass off about.

Second of all, Suh is better than any other lineman in this draft. A lot better...

Do we really want to draft more middle round players who have to "develop" to eventually become starters? Or, do we get the immediate impact with Suh?

Suh is also much better than McCoy...

Players from the first round are more likely to succeed than players taken in the second or third round. It is a given. So, would we rather not get Suh, and just settle with a second tier lineman?

Plus, you stated that most defensive linemen in this league are from later rounds. Name them.

Plus, if there are so many "JEWELS" in the middle rounds, how come most teams don't just trade for 5 extra middle round picks? Why are the first round picks so coveted?

                              That much depth?

It seems that they said the same thing when we drafted Kennedy, Carricker, Lewis, and so on. How did that work out for the Rams? Alot more miss in later rounds than hits. Heck the Rams have missed alot in the middle of the 1st round so when a big time prospect comes around then you do the homework and if he's the player everyone says he is you grab him.

You do make a good point of Spags eye for talent in the later rounds for Defensive Lineman. Not sure if that will factor in on this years draft we will have to wait and see.

Bye the way I am lmao that you never tried to provide evidence of your statement that dominating defensive lineman can be easily found in the later rounds. The statement is a big time strecth of the imagination and false.

                                By Nick Wagoner
                                Senior Writer

When he entered the league as a second-round choice in 2005, Ron Bartell entered a locker room full of veterans with plenty of winning experience.

On the other side of the locker room were the likes of Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt and Orlando Pace.

So when the news came earlier this week that Holt (whom Bartell counts among his closest friends in the league) was going on injured reserve and could be headed to retirement, Bartell couldn’t help but think of the possibility that trio would all retire in the same offseason.

Along with it, Bartell also couldn’t help but begin to think about how life in the NFL and success in the NFL can be oh so fleeting.

“It definitely puts it in perspective because I can remember when I came in back in ’05 and this is my sixth year already,” Bartell said. “It goes by fast so I am just trying to enjoy every single day.”

For the better part of the past year, Bartell is the first to admit, it’s been a bit harder to enjoy each day.

Coming off a terrific 2008 season in which he established himself as one of the league’s top cover corners, Bartell signed a lucrative multi-year contract that would keep him in St. Louis for what should be the prime of his career.

After a strong offseason, Bartell was slowed by a thigh injury early in the season that never quite went away. In part because of pride but mostly because of injuries to the rest of the corners on the roster, Bartell selflessly played through the pain even if it directly affected his play.

As the 2010 season approaches, the always self-motivated Bartell is looking for his shot at redemption and a chance to prove to everyone that he’s the player they saw in 2008.

“I am very excited,” Bartell said. “I feel like every year you should have something to prove so I definitely have a chip on my shoulder after last year. I am just excited about the possibilities of this defense. I think we are moving around faster, communicating better, more physical, tackling better. I am really excited right now.”

Bartell’s excitement was glaringly obvious in the opening days of this training camp as he emerged early on as one of the most dominant forces on the field. Pass breakups were coming by the handful and his improved knowledge of the defense was evident.

In short, Bartell looked like the player who had posted three interceptions and 20 passes defended in posting the best passer rating against of any corner in the division in 2008.

Even Bartell himself could feel his confidence and comfort level reaching new heights.

“Yeah, I felt like I was back to where I was around two years ago,” Bartell said. “I am comfortable with the defense; I know exactly...

I know almost nobody cares about this, but I do.I think he should be used more. For instance, instead of Chavous guarding the slot receiver, it should be Bartell.I beleive if he is utilized correctly, he could be a bright spot on this not so bright defence. He made a nice play on special teams, saving a touchback.Anyone see that. With this season all but over, [I hated to say that] we have nothing to lose. What do you think.

Bartell Back in Full Effect ..

                                By Brian Stull

Last year, Ron Bartell signed a new 4-year, $28 million contract to remain with the Rams. In doing so, he accepted the responsibilty and expectations that came with it.

"I thought I started to take more of a leadership role the last couple of games (of 2008)," Bartell said after inking the deal. He also cited a conversation with former Ram Corey Chavous about stepping up.

"He pretty much told me that a lot of guys have respect for what I'm doing, so it may be time for me to step up more and be more of a vocal guy. I'm not really big on 'rah rah' and all of that, but I try and lead by example. When they invest this kind of money in you, I think it's your duty to take a leadership role on this team."

Bartell did just that through training camp and preseason.

Unfortunately, Bartell injured his thigh early in the year and was forced to sit out Week 4 against San Franscisco. Treatment and limited reps in practice helped the muscle strain, but Bartell had to contend with the injury the rest of the season and it affected his speed and ability to cover.

"It was tough last year," admitted Bartell. "I tried to battle through it--maybe I should've taken a different route, but it is what it is. I never once complained and didn't have the season I wanted, but plan on coming back this year and having a strong season."

Ron managed 66 tackles and 3 forced fumbles, but that hardly met his expectations.

"Me, personally at the beginning of the year ('09) it was so robotic," said Bartell.

"Just battling through injuries to finish the season and get healthy. I went back and checked the game tape and it was totally different from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. It didn't end like we wanted it to but, the record was what it was but we're still confident we can do some things this year."

Besides being fully healthy, Bartell is also feeling the benefit of having gone through a full season of the Steve Spagnuolo defense.

"It's like night and day," shared Bartell. "Me and the guys were talking about how we feel so much different from last year's OTAs to this year's OTAs. We're just playing a lot faster--a lot more crisp. Hopefully, it translates into the games when the real bullets start to fly. But as of right now it's like night and day."

However, one similarity from last year is the addition of more young cornerbacks to the team. Last year, Bradley Fletcher was drafted in the third round. This year, Jerome Murphy (3rd) and Marquis Johnson (6th) were selected.

"They're eager to learn," observed Bartell. "They're raw--just like myself when I came in. They have a lot to learn, but as long as you're eager that's the first step. They're talented. Very aggressive....

With all the bad news the St. Louis Rams have dealt with this season, it's about time that something good happened. Something good happened today when cornerback Ron Bartell showed up at practice, his brace gone and neck healed from the broken vertebrae he suffered in the season opener.

Howard Balzer reported this on twitter.
Some good news for Rams: CB Ron Bartell out of neck brace. Bone is healed. Didn't need surgery. Said he is definitely playing next season..
For those that don't remember, Ron Bartell injured his neck against the Philadelphia Eagles. Before that, the Rams lost Jerome Murphy for the season in training camp. Following the Bartell injury, many other Rams would follow suit and end up on IR.

Next season, the Rams will be returning their three best corners. Two of those, Bradley Fletcher and Ron Bartell, have become injury magnets in their careers. Murphy hasn't been injured as often, but the jury is still out if he will become a good player.

The Rams have to decide if Ron Bartell is worth bringing back this season and beyond. He is owed $6 million in 2012, the last year of his current contract; Bradley Fletcher's rookie contract ends in 2013.

It will be shocking if the Rams don't draft or add another quality corner in the off-season....
