  • What if OJ Atogwe Leaves?

Many mocks and everything have us re-signing OJ. But for the last couple of years we could not get him signed long term.

So this year it's likely that he tests the market and if don't franchise him again and he leaves for a better Defense where do find his replacement?

If we take Suh in the 1st when do we go for a safety

Or should we get a free agent

this list is straight from footballsfuture.com

    Top Safeties:

Nick Collins, Green Bay Packers (27)
After seeing Collins blossom into one of best safeties last year, earning a Pro Bowl invite, the Packers wanted to see if he would perform at that high level once again. Almost through the regular season, Collins has done just that, playing at a level indicative of his talent and as one of the 5 best safeties in the league. The former second-round selection from Bethune-Cookman plays a very unique game. Collins isn’t always in the exact right position and plays aggressively in coverage, but has elite recovery speed to account for any error in his position. Collins has picked off 6 passes through 13 games and should be paid handsomely by Green Bay this offseason, or even before.

    Antoine Bethea, Indianapolis Colts (26)
Antoine Bethea is every bit as talented and important to the Colts’ secondary as the renowned enforcer, Bob Sanders, who’s on the IR this season. Despite earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2007, Bethea is still highly unrecognized. He’s consistently one of the Colts’ leading tacklers as a result of his sound angles and quick closing speed around the line of scrimmage. He is a little susceptible in coverage, but has the ability to play both strong safety and free safety. The Colts will likely choose to re-sign Bethea, if it comes down to him and the injured Marlin Jackson.

Roman Harper, New Orleans Saints (27)
Roman Harper can be compared to Bethea in a number of regards as one of the more underrated safeties in the league. His ability around the line of scrimmage in run support is among the best in the league. Harper leads the Saints in tackles for loss and is only 2 off Vilma’s pace for the league leader in tackles. Both of the Saints’ safeties are set to become free agents this year.

O.J. Atogwe, St. Louis Rams (29)
Atogwe is a four-year starter for the Rams at the backend of their secondary, giving them consistent production. Though his impact plays were down this season, Atogwe was on pace to break his personal best for tackles this season prior to his shoulder injury, which forced him to the IR. After designating him their franchise player, last season, the Rams were unable to get a long-term extension done. Coming off injury, the Rams will be cautious, but also realize Atogwe is one of the better players on the team

Darren Sharper, New Orleans Saints (34)
After a couple of inconsistent seasons in Minnesota, Darren Sharper has put himself back on the map while picking of 8 passes and remaining 4 interception yards away from breaking Ed Reed’s league record for most INT yards in a season. Sharper is your typical gambler in the secondary, risking big plays for aggressive coverage and the interception. Not to downplay Sharper’s success, but he’s only adequate in run support as well. The Saints would surely love to have him back on a defense that prides itself on forcing turnovers, but may not want to commit too much money considering he is also 34.

    Other Notable Free Agents:

Will Allen, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (28)
Atari Bigby, Green Bay Packers (28)
    Tyvon Branch, Oakland Raiders (23)
C.C. Brown, New York Giants (27)
    Daniel Bullocks, Detroit Lions (27)
    Josh Bullocks, Chicago Bears (27)
    Tyrone Carter, Pittsburgh Steelers (34)
    Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh Steelers (30)
    Hiram Eugene, Oakland Raiders (29)
    Sean Jones, Philadelphia Eagles (28)
    Dawan Landry, Baltimore Ravens (27)
    Danieal Manning, Chicago Bears (28)
Jarrad Page, Kansas City Chiefs (26)
    Brodney Pool, Cleveland Browns (26)
Mark Roman, San Francisco ***** (33)
    Gerald Sensabaugh, Dallas Cowboys (27)
    Roy Williams, Cincinnati Bengals (30)

Yeah, it's tough because when one makes a mock it's already pre-determined whose on the team. Reality is a bit different.

Let's hope we can just re-sign him.
Always and Forever a fan of the St. Louis Rams

It's a lot easier to tag someone than offer them a long term deal and have them not play well. I HAVE NOT been able to watch the games this year, so I really don't know how well or bad he's been. Does anyone know what the Franchise tage $$ is for a safety? If it doesn't handicap the team, I don't know of anyone else worth using it on, and at this point I'd really hate to see another hole that needs filling..

Have the Rams really been trying to sign him long term for a couple of years now? I'm in my car posting from my phone so I can't look it up to confirm, but I think the only serious negotiations they've probably had with OJ were last year before tagging him.

Anyways, the solution seems rather simple to me. Either sign him long term, or tag him again. If there's a cap, the Rams will have enough room to absorb a franchise tagged player. If there isn't a cap, then price won't matter. Replacing OJ is only an issue if this organization lets him walk for some reason.

Especially for a tagged safety; which (last I checked) is one of the cheaper tags to place.

One thing we haven't talked about though......OJ is 29. Just how big a contract do we throw at a guy on the cusp of 30? Not saying we don't sign him, just something to factor.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

He is an RFA in uncapped year and thats what it is looking like so I wouldn't worry to much. All the other main guys you listed except sharper would also be RFA's. The way i see it playing out all those main guys are going back to their teams.

I personally would like to resign him but if that doesnt work out I'd love to get our Hands on Harper...

I was thinking the same thing, and he still is liability when it comes to pass defense. If a better option is out there I say we atleast give it a look, but Sprags and O.J. seem to have a great relationship so he may desire to resign now.

Oh just to tell you guys the rule for an uncapped year will give the Rams 2 franchise tags

And i think its either all playoff teams or just the 10 teams with the best records cannot sign a free agent unless they lose a free agent il have the complete rules when i find them

Re: What if OJ Atogwe Leaves?

Here are some of the limits on free agency for an uncapped year this is from Pat Kirwin from nfl.com:

There could still be a few choice players left to test free agency and a number of solid players on bad teams will be looking to go to contending teams. A team such as the Patriots has always done a great job in free agency, getting very good veterans on reasonable deals because a player wants a chance at a Super Bowl ring. Well, there will be a "Final 8" rule in 2010.

The rule will restrict the final eight teams in the playoffs from signing free agents. The final four teams shall not be permitted to negotiate and sign any unrestricted free agent to a player contract except for players who acquired their status by being cut or were on the final four team when their contract expired. Playoff teams five thru eight get a break to sign one player with a salary of $4,925,000 or more and any number of players with a first-year salary of no more than $3,275,000 and an annual increase of no more than 30 percent in the following years.

There is a mechanism to permit the final eight teams to sign an unrestricted free agent for each one of their own unrestricted free agents who sign with another club as long as they don't spend more than what their own lost player received from his new club.

For all practical purposes, free agency will not have any teeth in 2010 and close to 200 players hoping to hit a big pay day will have to wait at least a year and risk injury.

The same double R, not sure if you got a chance to see the games against the Vikings this year for example, but he is a hard hitter and solid in the run game, but he's a liability in the passing game just like O.J. is. if we are comparing the two players O.J. is the better player at this time due to the fact that he is more of a play maker than Atari is.

We need him back. He is the backbone of our secondary and one of the only bright spots on the defense, along with Laurinaitis and Carriker.

You mean Laurinaitis and Long? Adam Carriker didn't play this year and he's not even that good.
