  • NFL Mock Draft With Analysis, Picks 1-24

    by Benjamin Klein Benjamin KleinContributor

Contributor Written on January 13, 2010

Just like fantasy football and Madden videogames NFL mock drafts have almost no impact on actual NFL decision-making and as such are mostly pointless. But like fantasy football and Madden videogames mock drafts are fun, stupid addictive fun.

So with that I give you my mock draft 1.0. It will only include picks 1-24, no hypothetical trades and I settled all tie breakers just like the NFL, a multi-billion dollar business does, a coin flip.

    1. St-Louis Rams- Ndamukong Suh, Senior, Nebraska

Many scouts claim Suh is the best defensive tackle prospect of all time. What makes Suh so impressive is his combination of pure herculean strength, incredible lateral agility, lightening fast foot quickness, unstoppable motor and the hip smoothness and explosion of a running back. Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo is probably already salivating.

    2. Detroit Lions- Eric Berry, Junior, Tennessee

Berry has the open field ball-hawking awareness of Ed Reed, the run stuffing tenacity and fearlessness of Bob Sanders, Ronnie Lott’s ability to lock down the slot and Ray Lewis’s leadership and attitude. Berry will become the immediate heart, soul and star of a Lions defense in desperate need of a change of attitude. Berry and last years second round pick Louis Delmas will form the best young safety duo in the league bar none.

    3. Tampa Bay Bucs- Gerald McCoy, Junior, Oklahoma

McCoy has the fastest first step of any defensive tackle to enter the draft since Chicago Bears star Tommie Harris was drafted in 2004. The Bucs have one of one of the weakest defensive lines in the league and McCoy fits Head Coach Raheem Morris’s defensive scheme perfectly, so in essence this makes too much sense not to happen.

    4. Washington Redskins- Sam Bradford, Junior, Oklahoma

Bradford, a member of the Cherokee nation may be a tad offended playing for a team known as the Redskins but he and Mike Shanahan were made for each other. Bradford’s laser sharp accuracy, ability to bootleg, decision making, underrated arm strength, intelligence, size and moxie are too perfect for Shanny’s west coast offense to pass up despite injury concerns.

    5. Kansas City Chiefs- Rolando McClain, Junior, Alabama

A reach to be sure, but the kind of reach Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli is known for. The Chiefs lack a single viable inside linebacker, McClain would fix that and make the run defense at least respectable. McClain has elite size and instincts for the 3-4 inside linebacker position and while lacking elite speed he can go sideline to sideline. McClain would be the starter from day one and control the defense like Peyton Manning does the Colts offense.

    6. Seattle Seahawks- Jimmy Clausen, Junior, Notre Dame

Pete Carroll needs to begin remaking the Seahawks offense and Clausen is the perfect starting point. Clausen is tough, smart, clutch, strong armed and accurate. While he floats his deep balls Carroll can coach that out of him. Current QB Matt Hasselbeck can play elderly mentor while Carroll coaches Clausen up from the bench for a year.

    7. Cleveland Browns- Joe Haden, Junior, Florida

Mike Holmgren may want to go offense but the top of the draft is defense heavy. Haden has elite speed, hips, burst and instincts for the cornerback position. His tackling and awareness can be coached up by Eric Mangini, who has proven that he can develop a great secondary. Give Mangini Joe Haden to pair and develop with Eric Wright and the Browns secondary will befuddle and frustrate quarterbacks for years.

    8. Oakland Raiders- Tim Tebow, Senior, Florida

A reach of massive proportions but Al Davis is currently inept beyond compare, and trying to figure out what crazy draft move he will make next is like trying to grab the moon, but I’ll try. JeMarcus Russell is a Ryan Leaf like bust at this point in his career and his disinterest is killing the Raiders hopes of the playoffs. Tebow would at least give the Raiders a positive attitude and an effective running game.

    9. Buffalo Bills- Anthony Davis, Junior, Rutgers

The Bills offensive line was one of the worst in football last year and that was before first round pick Eric Wood suffered a leg injury that would make Joe Theisman wince. Davis is a first class athlete at left tackle, huge, nimble, long and violent. However he is inconsistent in effort, but he is far and away the most gifted left tackle prospect in this years draft.

    10. Denver Broncos- Carlos Dunlap, Junior, Florida

The Broncos defense started off red hot under new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan but tailed off as the defensive line got tired and hurt. Carlos Dunlap is like a poor man’s Mario Williams; huge at 6’6 290 pounds but also fast and quick. Dunlap would play 3-4 end for the Broncos, and would thrive in a role similar to the role Justin Smith plays for with the *****. He would go higher if not for an ill-timed D.U.I. arrest at the end of his college career, this is as far as the slide goes though.

    11. Jacksonville Jaguars- Derrick Morgan, Junior, Georgia Tech

Derrick Harvey isn’t that good and Quentin Grooves is a bust. Head Coach Jack Del Rio is also circling the drain, and need to make the playoffs to save his job. If that is going to happen the Jags have to do a better job attacking Peyton Manning, Vince Young and Matt Schaub. Morgan is the best pass rusher in the draft with a fantastic size/speed ratio and outstanding instincts. He is athletic enough to play outside linebacker in a 3-4, but would be best suited as a defensive end in a 4-3.

    12. Miami Dolphins- Dez Bryant, Junior, Oklahoma State

The Dolphins are desperate for a top-flight wide receiver and prior to last season considered a strait up deal of Ronnie Brown for Braylon Edwards. Tedd Ginn is a player but not a stud and Chad Henne needs help. Dez Bryant may be the best pure deep ball threat to enter the draft since DeSean Jackson only he's taller, tougher and stronger than Jackson.

    13. San Francisco *****- Earl Thomas, Junior, Texas

The ***** are on the cusp, but their pass defense and offensive line aren’t up to par. Earl Thomas is a poor man’s Eric Berry, a little smaller, a little slower, etc, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a fantastic prospect in his own right. Thomas would supplant Michael Lewis at safety for the *****, who at this point is a linebacker masquerading as a safety.

    14. Seattle Seahawks- Russell Okung, Senior, Oklahoma State

The ‘Hawk’s would be doing cartwheels if they got Okung, the most complete left tackle in the draft, to protect Jimmy Clausen. Okung does not possess elite size or athleticism nor is he an elite pass-blocker or run-blocker. However he is well above average in all of those categories and lacks any real weaknesses aside from his lack of bulk. With a little extra weight Okung would have Jimmy Clausen relaxed in the pocket for a decade.

    15. New York Football Giants- C.J. Spiller, Senior, Clemson

Spiller seems like a luxury pick for the Giants on the surface, but he wouldn’t be. The Giants return game needs an upgrade and Eli Manning needs a security blanket in the passing game out of the backfield. Spiller would provide both in explosive fashion, giving the Giants a dangerous exciting all purpose running back the likes of which they haven’t seen since a young Tiki Barber.

    16. Tennessee Titans- Taylor Mays, Senior, U.S.C.

Mays physical attributes are off the charts, he hasn’t even tested yet and he is already a combine legend. However Mays’ lacks the instincts in the passing game to translate well to the NFL as a safety. That doesn’t mean Mays wouldn’t be epic as a 4-3 weakside linebacker. Mays was always better in the box at U.S.C., put him there fulltime with the Titans and his production may be otherworldly.

    17. San Francisco *****- Trent Williams, Senior, Oklahoma

William’s senior season as a left tackle was not very good. To put it plainly, he cannot play left tackle at the NFL level as he lacks the foot speed and first step burst to keep up with elite right ends. As a right tackle is another story, put him on the right side of the offensive line and watch him maul. Alex Smith needs the protection and Frank Gore needs the running lanes.

    18. Pittsburgh Steelers- Dan Williams, Senior, Tennessee

The Steelers are a 3-4 team, and their all-pro nose tackle Casey Hampton is just about at the end of the road. If the Steelers want to continue to run a 3-4 after Hampton, which is soon, they need a replacement nose tackle. Dan Williams is big enough, strong enough and has a good enough understanding of leverage to be that guy.

    19. Houston Texans-Brian Price, Junior, UCLA

Aside from Mario Williams the Texans draft history for defensive lineman is just awful. That doesn’t mean they should stop trying. Brian Price would give the Texans what they thought they had with Amobi Akoye. Price is extremely quick with the best understanding of leverage of any defensive tackle prospect in the draft. He would make the lives of Williams, Brian Cushing and DeMeco Ryans much, much easier.

    20. Atlanta Falcons- Jason Pierre Paul, Junior, Southern Florida

Jamaal Anderson is a bust and John Abraham is getting old so injecting some skill and youth into the Falcons pass rush is a major need. Paul is a little raw in his technique against the run and could stand to add a few pounds but his instincts for rushing the quarterback and athleticism are both top notch if not elite.

    21. Cincinnati Bengals- Jermaine Gresham, Senior, Oklahoma

A bit of a reach, but the Bengals were so desperate for a tight end last year they offered the Dallas Cowboys a first round pick for Martellus Bennett. Gresham is coming off a lost year due to a knee injury and may not be able to work out before the draft. That being said if doctors say he is fine Gresham has a chance to be a Kellen Winslow Jr. type threat without the attitude.

    22. New England Patriots- Jonathan Dwyer, Junior, Georgia Tech

Dwyer reminds me of Michael Turner in his size and underrated speed. What makes him perfect for the Patriots is his ability to run effectively out of the spread formation, something the Patriot love to employ. Dwyer would also give Brady’s arm a rest and help the defense rest up by keeping the clock running. Dwyer would give the Patriots their most bruising north/south runner since Corey Dillion.

    23. Green Bay Packers- Bryan Bulaga, Junior, Iowa

The Packers offense is a scoring machine but that will only last as long as they don’t get Aaron Rodgers killed with terrible pass protection. Enter Bulaga, who has the size, quickness and tenacity to challenge the Jared Allen’s of the world. Bulaga is a tough player to evaluate and scouts seem to be very split on him. Some have him a second rounder and others a lock as a top 10 pick. If he is available, the Packers need him to keep Aaron Rodgers upright.

    24. Philadelphia Eagles- Brandon Spikes, Senior, Florida

Spikes would provide an immediate injection of physical and mental toughness to the Eagles defense, something they have sorely lacked since Brian Dawkins left. Take into account that the Eagle’s linebacking core was so thin they brought back Jeremiah Trotter and Spikes makes even more sense. With big bodies Broderick Bunkley and Mike Patterson in front of him, Spikes would become an immediate and perennial 100+ tackling machine.

Re: NFL Mock Draft With Analysis, Picks 1-24

    A few thoughts on this...

-Berry before McCoy is certainly possible, but I don't think it's very likely right now. Detroit needs some help up front.

    -Bradford before Clausen, interesting.

-I think Raiders fans would storm the stadium if Tebow was their top ten selection. I don't find that one particularly realistic, though I do anticipate Tebow being taken higher than I'd take him myself.

-I'm not a fan of the Spiller-to-Giants pick. They already have Jacobs and Bradshaw in the backfield; it'd be a bit crowded.

Everything else looked pretty solid, IMO.

Good mock draft, id like to see the rest of it, if possible. The Tebow to oakland pick made me laugh out loud to myself..i don't think even Al Davis would have the nerve to do that to their fans again.

I think Dez would wind up heading to jacksonville before morgan, but i see why they'd grab morgan all the say.

not a fan of taylor mays. poor coverage and poor wrap up tackler. exposes himself too much. i think he should slip to the second myself..

      otherwise good stuff

              15. New York Football Giants- C.J. Spiller, Senior, Clemson

If this happens then that means that potentially Ahmad Bradshaw can come and join us in free agency which would be a much needed addition.

                2010 NFL Mock Draft
By: Robert Davis | Updated: 10/20

1.St. Louis - Jake Locker, QB, Washington
Locker has had a meteoric rise up the draft boards this year, and he should continue to rise with more experience in a pro style attack. He has the best blend of natural talent of any of the QB’s this year, along with the toughness and leadership skills. This may be a bit high as of October, but expect Locker to continue to rise and really impress in the post season should he declare.

2.Tampa Bay - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
McCoy is a playmaker on the interior line and players like that will always be in high demand. He could draw a lot of attention at the top overall spot, but the Bucs would love to bring in a player that can impact a game from the DT spot like Warren Sapp once did in Tampa.

3.Kansas City - Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
Berry is arguably the best player in this draft, and a player with his versatility would fit in well with any team. He could play any spot in the secondary and be a pro bowl caliber performer. The Chiefs could use some playmaking ability on the offensive side of the ball or a pass rusher on defense, but Berry is too good to pass up at this spot.

                4.Oakland - Everson Griffen, DE/OLB, USC
Al Davis has shown to take a liking to players from USC and players who have extraordinary speed for their position. Enter Everson Griffen. His speed for a 270+ lber is amazing. He tops the 270lb mark, but has tremendous speed and athleticism and should have no problem standing up and playing in space. Don’t rule out another Trojan, Taylor Mays, for the same reasons even if they drafted a safety in the second round last year and Michael Huff appears to be coming on.

5.Cleveland - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Just over a year ago, Cleveland had two highly regarded QB’s. Now, they’re looking for a long term answer as both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn have not been able to take hold of the starting position. There are a lot of needs throughout the roster, but you won’t get anywhere without a QB. Bradford has had shoulder problems, but it’s not considered a long term issue.

6.Tennessee - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Suh may not be quite as physically imposing as Albert Haynesworth but he is a force to be reckoned with on the defensive line. Suh is very active and can clog running lanes and get into the backfield and disrupt the action.

7.Detroit - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma St.
There is hope in Detroit. A solid draft last year has at least given the Lions hope for the future. Giving last years top overall pick Matthew Stafford blindside protection is a big concern, as Jeff Backus is up there in age and average at best anyway.

8.Buffalo - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
The Bills did a decent job upgrading the talent on the interior offensive line in the...

Nick's Pre-Senior Bowl 2010 First Round Mock Draft
                by Nick
Now that all of the underclassmen have declared, I thought it was time to update my mock draft! My first mock of the year came sometime before Christmas, and I’m hoping to have a new one out sometime after the Senior Bowl. Hope this tides you over for a little while!

                1. St. Louis Rams: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
-Not much has changed from my first mock of the offseason. If the Rams think either Clausen or Bradford can be elite quarterbacks, they may be tempted to take one. But I still think when it comes to this pick, Suh makes the most sense for the Rams. He’s considered the best prospect in this class and one of the best to come around in a long time. The Rams could certainly use his help in the trenches.

                2. Detroit Lions: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
-Though they may prefer Suh, Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy is a fine consolation prize for the Lions, who seem to have a number of offensive weapons but now need to work on the defensive side of the ball. Head coach Jim Schwartz came from a Tennessee Titans defense that featured Albert Haynesworth, so he knows the value of a talented, disruptive lineman.

                3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
-Don’t be surprised if Tampa Bay tries to move up to secure either Suh or McCoy, because this team is desperate for defensive line help. I would be too if my team was starting Chris Hovan and Ryan Sims. But if the Bucs are forced to pick here and both tackles are off the board, Tennessee’s Eric Berry would be the obvious choice to help upgrade their defensive secondary.

                4. Washington Redskins: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
-Not Clausen, you say? Consider this – the doctor who performed Sam Bradford’s shoulder surgery works for the Washington Redskins, which should give them an inside edge regarding Bradford’s recovery and outlook. Bradford was the frontrunner to be selected first overall before his injury, and if he gets Dr. Andrews’ seal of approval, could be the Redskin’ pick here.

                5. Kansas City Chiefs: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
-The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Virginia’s Branden Albert to be their left tackle of the future, even though he spent most of his college career at guard. Albert has had a rough sophomore year, surrendering nine sacks while being penalized ten times. In order to better protect multimillion dollar QB Matt Cassel, look for the Chiefs to give Russell Okung a hard look in April.

                6. Seattle Seahawks: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
-New head coach Pete Carroll has given veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck a vote of confidence, but don’t think for a minute that the Seahawks are happy about the long-term standing of their quarterback situation. One of Carroll’s first priorities should be looking for a quarterback of the future, and if Jimmy Clausen...

Nick's "All I Want For Christmas Is A" First-Round Mock Draft
                by Nick
It's my first mock of the 2010 NFL Draft season, and just in time for Christmas! I worked a bit on this yesterday and a bit on it today, and I think I'm pretty satisfied with what I came up with. I'll try to use this as a starting point for a seven-round Rams mock draft in the coming days, but I wanted to get this one up in the meantime. Enjoy!!

                NFL 2010 MOCK DRAFT

                1. St. Louis Rams: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
-With the first pick in the draft, it’s only natural to select the best player, right? The Rams could certainly use a quarterback of the future, but I’m simply not convinced that there’s a candidate worthy of this pick, especially with Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh on the board. It’s hard to imagine Suh not being an absolute force of nature in a Steve Spagnuolo defense.

                2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
-While Ndamukong Suh has been getting all the attention as the draft’s best defensive lineman, Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy is a pretty darn good prospect in his own right. McCoy practically had property in his opponents’ backfields, accumulating 14.5 tackles for loss this season. His addition would make it easier for Tampa to phase out Ryan Sims and Chris Hovan.

                3. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
-Head coach Eric Mangini may want to find “his guy” at quarterback, but I think Brady Quinn has shown enough promise to keep the Browns from reaching for a signal-caller here. Instead, they’ll take the best player available in Eric Berry. While safeties traditionally don’t go this high in the draft, Berry’s playmaking ability and versatility make him a good choice.

                4. Detroit Lions: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
-Last year, the Lions pulled the trigger on drafting a franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford and a well balanced tight end in Brandon Pettigrew. They already had a top receiver in Calvin Johnson and a workhorse runner in Kevin Smith. The final piece to the offensive puzzle is a franchise left tackle, because most people realize that Jeff Backus is simply not getting the job done.

                5. Kansas City Chiefs: Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama
-It might surprise some people to see McClain’s name this high in a mock draft, but there’s a school of thought that McClain could leap up draft boards with Patrick Willis-type potential. The Chiefs demonstrated last year that they were willing to make a surprise pick if the prospect fit their scheme, and McClain would be a force as an inside ‘backer in Kansas City’s 3-4.

                6. Washington Redskins: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
-Though Jason Campbell has been coming on strong the last two weeks, I believe that Washington’s pursuit of both Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez indicates that Campbell will likely be moving on in 2010. While the future of head coach Jim Zorn remains to be seen, the Redskins will need to...

Nick's Pre-Combine 2010 First Round & Full Rams Mock Draft
                by Nick
I decided to glue myself to the office chair last night and this morning to pump out a pre-Combine mock draft, including a full seven-round Rams mock as well. A few things have changed since my last mock, which I believe was pre-Senior Bowl. Feedback is always welcome, enjoy!!

                ROUND ONE

                1. St. Louis Rams: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
-So far, nothing has changed from the final weeks of the college football season in my eyes. Ndamukong Suh is still the best player in this class, I think he’s still ranked ahead of McCoy, and I don’t think either quarterback has closed the gap enough to make them strong considerations here. Medical tests and pro days may change that, but right now, I still think Suh is the best pick here.

                2. Detroit Lions: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
-Detroit is in a great position, because with a giant need on the interior of the defensive line, they’re going to get either Suh or Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy. If the Rams elect to take a quarterback, then Suh falls to Detroit. If Suh goes first overall, then the Lions still get a great prospect in McCoy, whose skills as a disruptive lineman will be maximized under head coach Jim Schwartz.

                3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
-Say what?! There’s been a lot of buzz in the past couple of days that suggests the Buccaneers may be eyeing South Florida’s Jason Pierre-Paul if they can’t land one of the defensive tackles. Tennessee’s Eric Berry likely carries a higher grade, but safety doesn’t have the positional value that a pass rusher does. Some see JPP as having Mario Williams potential.

                4. Washington Redskins: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
-No quarterback? Well, I still contend that Sam Bradford makes a lot of sense here if his doctor, who also works for the Redskins, gives him a clean bill of health. But I think Chris Samuels’s health makes the left tackle position a big concern for this organization, as the Redskins are reportedly moving forward as if Samuels will not be returning to the club. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if a tackle is taken here over a signal caller.

                5. Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
-A surprise move by the Buccaneers really works out well for the Chiefs, who find Tennessee’s Eric Berry sitting in their laps in this scenario. You can’t tell me the Chiefs couldn’t use a safety of Berry’s caliber, because current safeties Jon McGraw and Mike Brown are nothing to write home about. If Kansas City was so inclined, they could even try to plug Berry in at cornerback opposite of Brandon Flowers.

                6. Seattle Seahawks: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
-Based on what the new Seahawks coaching staff is saying, it sounds as if Matt Hasselbeck will probably be back under center. But that...

This thing is likely going to be out of date in less than 24 hours because of trades and whatnot, but it's unlikely I pump another one of these out between now and the draft. So I present to you my final projection for the 2010 NFL Draft! Enjoy!

                ROUND ONE

                1. St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
-There’s been talk as the draft nears that the Rams would be wise to trade down from this pick. However, without a blockbuster offer, it’s unlikely to happen. Sam Bradford may not be the best player in this class, but as the best quarterback, he fills the Rams’ biggest need and gives them a fresh face to build around.

                2. Detroit Lions: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
-On Monday, Lions fans attending a team pre-draft event chanted the name of Ndamukong Suh, to which head coach Jim Schwartz said, “You won’t be disappointed.” Though some believe the Lions are a candidate to take an offensive tackle, Sam Bradford’s selection by the Rams cements Suh as Detroit’s pick here.

                3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
-Reports suggest that the Buccaneers may prefer Nebraska defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh over McCoy, but they’ll certainly be happy to get the outstanding Oklahoma lineman with Suh off the board. McCoy played in a penetrating one-gap defense for the Sooners, so he’ll feel right at home in Tampa Bay’s defense.

                4. Washington Redskins: Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
-This pick could really go either way between the top two tackles, but there seems to be some legitimate buzz about Trent Williams being the better fit for Mike Shanahan’s zone blocking system. The Redskins are in desperate need for offensive line help, so unless Sam Bradford slips, it’s hard to believe they won’t look at either Williams or Russell Okung.

                5. Kansas City Chiefs: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
-The Chiefs will have an interesting decision to make. They already feel as if they have a talented left tackle in Branden Albert, but Okung’s addition would allow them to move Albert to another position on the line, thus upgrading two spots. While Eric Berry will certainly be tempting, I expect the Chiefs to go with Okung if he’s available.

                6. Seattle Seahawks: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
-Given the fact that Ray Willis opened Seahawks minicamp as the starting left tackle, offensive line is clearly a need for Seattle. But the best two are off the board, and Bryan Bulaga may not be great value here. C.J. Spiller’s ability as a runner, receiver, and return man may remind head coach Pete Carroll of Reggie Bush.

                7. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
-Despite public comments by Mike Holmgren, the Browns may give some consideration to Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen. However,...
