  • Rebuilding a dynasty: The Prez's Mock

Key Resignings: I'm not sure the number of guys that will be eligible for FA but to reiterate what most everyone else has said, I'll give you some of the key returners.
1.) OJ Atogwe: Gotta have playmakers in the D-backfield and he's our number 1 guy back there. Almost regardless of the price, pay the man.

2.) Cliff Ryan: A rising star as far as DT are concerned and a player that will be a cornerstone in our return to building the fearsome foursome.

3.) Gary Gibson: Showed promise as a rotational player in the absence of Adam Carriker early in the season should be cheap to keep and depth on the D-line is a key to Spagnulo's approach.

4.) Craig Dahl: Played well enough to keep a back up job while James Butler was injured, makes a solid special teamer and did well as a situational blitzer.

5.) Mark Setterstrom: O-line will likely be an emphasis in FA and pre-season so keeping Setterstrom makes sense as he can start and perform at an NFL level already.

(I'm sure there are more that we'll keep, these are just the key mentionables)

Free Agency: The uncapped year could be a detriment to acquiring young FA's this team will need, but these are a few players that I'm hopefull the Rams will pull in.

Chris Gocong (OLB): The Rams will be on the prowl for a legitimate playmaker to help shore up long runs. Gocong comes from that Philly D that already shares the genes as Spagnulos' system, and is a pretty solid pass covering LB as well.

Aaron Kampman (DE/OLB): Had a rough season that ended in injury after the Pack switched to their 3-4 format, but could be on the way out. Packers have plenty of LB depth already with Chillar, Matthews, Hawk et. all.

Jerious Norwood (HB): Speedster to come in and spell our prized back SJ39. Hope to see him make it over because I'm sure the Rams would rather spend picks elsewhere.

Tony Scheffler (TE): McDaniels is casting off as many of his malcontents as he can, so hopefully the asking price won't be too steep to grab up a solid pass catching (not dropping) TE.

The Draft: Much has already been made about this years draft and it's only January. Plenty will happen in the coming weeks and months, but this is just an initial look at what could shake down.

Pick 1 (3rd): With the 3rd overall pick The Rams select QB Jimmy Clausen Notre Dame. I truly believe that Suh will be a great player, but I also believe that The Bucs will give almost anything to get to him, including both of their 2nd round picks. With 5 picks in the top 3 rounds, we could fast track some rebuilding and still make a few solid moves.

Pick 2 (33rd): Sean Weatherspoon OLB Missouri. The Rams steal a great player at the top of the 2nd from their hometown school and a guy who will start straight away. With a possible LB corps of J-Lau and Gocong, we've got a fierce gang.

    Pick 3 (35th):
Brandon Ghee CB Wake Forrest. I realize this won't be a popular pick amongst you fellow Rammers, but this kid has the size we're looking for and skills to play the spot well. He shut down another popular 2nd round option (Demariyus Thomas) and still plays the run well.

Pick 4 (44th): Demaryius Thomas WR Georgia Tech. We'll need to add an offensive playmaker to help our new QB and this kid has all the potential and promise you can ask for in a rookie. His route running is questionable, but by all accounts is a dedicated student of the game and will improve in camp.

Pick 5 (65th) Arthur Jones DT Syracuse. He's been a big time player for the Orange and we might get a shot at him here because of a season ending knee injury. Reports are that it won't be a major deal to get healthy and he may be back on the field by mini camps. If he falls here, major steal.

Pick 6 (97th) Austen Lane DE Murray State. The premier defensive player from DII football this year. Lane was a force to be reckoned with and is definately worth a look here as a guy to come in and spell Aaron Kampman.
(A second possiblity I looked at here would be to trade our 4th and one of our 5ths for Osi, assuming we don't get Kampman in FA)

Pick 7 (129th) John Jerry OG Missippi. There could be a war waged for starter at RT during the preseason and Jerry is a guy that can play anywhere along the line. Given our run of line injury victims, that's a great attribute to have.

Pick 8 (152) Sam Maxwell OLB Kentucky. A guy who had shoulder surgery to end his season in Kentucky, but a player with real upside. Good size and speed, he also has a great nose for the ball with 6 picks his last year in college. Could make good depth and special teamer.

Pick 9 (161) Chris Scott OT Tennessee. Had a rough outing against Va Tech in their bowl game, but the UT line gave up the fewest sacks in the SEC. He'll play the senior bowl, so he could rise from this spot, but if he's here, he's worth a look for depth.

Pick 10 (193) Jeff Byers OG USC. Another guy for line depth. 2nd team all PAC 10 so he has credentials.

Pick 11 (211) Jordan Lake S Baylor. Special teamer, good eye for the ball, has pretty solid size and speed too.

There you have it. I may have went a little defensive heavy, but the D wins championships, no matter how many spread offenses we come up against. Let me know what you think, I might even try another a bit later down the line!

I appreciate your effort and like several of the players you picked.

      However...

While I believe a trade can be worked out with Tampa I don't think they will give up that much.

First I believe they only have 4 picks in the first three rounds not 3.

Second they are rebuilding like us and are sitting pretty with their 4 first day picks. If they don't trade they end up with 1 stud and 2 high quality players. If they do trade they just end up with 1 stud.

      IMHO

I appreciate your feedback. I do agree that it is an unlikely situation. I have read that both Tampa Bay bloggers and fans alike are fairly receptive to giving up both 2nd rounders though if the opportunity were to arise to snag Suh though, so if the Bucs are crazy enough for one player, I fully expect our guys in the FO to make them pay.

If it doesn't end up happening though, I'm cool with that. I think Suh will make a great player. The fantasy of sweeping through the draft with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds is kind of fun though.

why not javier arenas at cb in rd 3, he was good for the tide and returned punts (although we do have amendola)

Javier Arenas is like 5-8, 5-9. He's not going to be able to hold his own against bigger receivers like Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, etc.

I don't think it's too crazy to assume that Ghee wouldn't be there around the first 10 picks in the 2nd round. Thomas might be a reach to stick around later int he 2nd, a lot of that will be sorted out when the combines take place. I think Arthur Jones will still be around at the top of the 3rd though. Most of the teams looking for DT's would have snagged theres in the first 2 rounds.

The rest of those guys are just kind of guestimates. I was trying to coincide with where nfldraftscouts.com had them ranked, so again I'm sure a couple will help their cases come combines/senior bowl but at this point in time, most of those guys are projected to be going in those particular slots.

What is the magic number then if the smaller guys are not capable of shutting down the big guys. I much rather have a small guy like Green or Revis under 6 feet than any guy you can name over 6 feet 1?

To me it's pretty obvious the only reason he will not be able to hold his own will be due to his first name starting in a J and not in a D.

Im not saying he has to go 1 on 1 against the best receivers in the league if he would cover them he would get help from our line backers or oj and butler

You sold me on this draft with the words "Arthur Jones" and if we could grab him in round 3 it would be an absolute home run in my book. I'm sure Jimmy Clausen would be much happier to be on his team than playing against him, after what Art did to Notre Dame in their 2008 matchup (15 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks).

Resigned players, Free Agency, Trade, and Draft Round 1-3.

                        RESIGN
                        - DT Clifton Ryan:
The dude is starting to become a very good player, for those who watch all the games, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The last 3 weeks he's really clicked. He's in the backfield making plays, and he's plugging up gaps and getting penetration on running plays. He's even showed a few times the ability to rush the passer, with another solid Defensive Lineman, his skills would be nationally known. He's still young and hasn't entered his prime, he's just beginning to touch is potential. He's a cornerstone to our future.

                        - S Craig Dahl:
Craig has been very good for us since joining the Rams. He's arguably been our best performer at safety. Last week really showed us what he can do when early in the game against the Colts, Dahl blew up a toss play in the backfield for a loss of yards, making a great open field tackle. He hasn't been a liability in coverage either, he's not going to be expensive which is a big positive.

                        - LB Larry Grant
He's been solid, he's young and has been decent for us, he'll come cheap and could potentially start at SLB for us.

                        - T Alex Barron
As badly as some of us want him to leave, he hasn't been bad this year, and he hasn't been great. He's not going to demand a lot of money and can provide good depth and potential starting ability again next year. He needs a strong finish to get a decent contract. He's young as well.

                        FREE AGENCY
                        RB Jerious Norwood

                        - Norwood would provide an excellent change of pace back for Steven Jackson. Norwood has elite speed and can take it to the house at anytime. He's a poor mans Chris Johnson. He'll also be able to take some pressure of Steven.

                        TE Tony Scheffler

                        - The Rams are in dire need of a new Tight End, it's no secret. Fells has showed flashes but isn't consistent enough, he's a solid #2. Scheffler, is a very good pass catching Tight End and will block. He's not in the plans in Denver and will most likely walk. He'll bring an excellent ability to catch passes here.

                        LB Derrick Johnson

                        - Johnson will bring instant credibility to St. Louis. He's a fine OLB in a 4-3 defense, he struggled with transition last season in Kansas City. He's a playmaker and would excel in Spagnuolo's scheme and also doesn't fit into plans with the new coaching staff over at Kansas City.

                        DE Mark Anderson

                        - Solid player who could come in and compete for a DE spot opposite of Chris Long. At worst he'd provide solid depth.

                        ** TRADE **
The Rams trade a 5th round and 6th round pick for QB Michael Vick.

                        - Love him or hate him, he'd be a difference maker. He may not have a high completion percentage but he gets...

                        Mock Draft- Off-Season
                        by Harry S. Truman
First, here's my predicted free agent signings..

                        - Chase Blackburn
                        OLB
                        Giants

                        - He's a steady tackler, not much of a pass rusher, but he's consistent all around otherwise. On top of things, he's got a good work ethic, and is familiar with a Spagnulo run defense. At 26, he's still got some upside yet.

                        - Leigh Bodden
                        CB
                        Patriots

                        - Bodden was New England's best DB in 2009, picking off 5 passes, while racking up 55 tackles and more importantly helping New England improve their pass defense, and was crucial in helping the Pats cut their allowed passing touchdown numbers.

                        - Charlie Whitehurst
                        QB
                        Chargers

Has a good arm with accuracy, good size for the position and has spent his first three seasons in the NFL learning behind one of the NFL's best young QB (Phillip Rivers) and a very good QB developer as Head Coach (Norv Turner).

Rivers has actually gone on record and said that Whitehurst is overdue for a starting QB opportunity, and stated when he gets the chance, some team will be glad they gave him that shot.

I view Whitehurst as a low risk, high reward pickup. He likely won't cost much, and if he develops, the Rams have their QB situation solved. If not, it was a low risk signing and they can focus their attentions to adding a QB in the first in next year's draft.

                        Re-sign

                        O.J. Atogwe
                        Alex Barron
                        Leonard Little

Lastly.. Bring back Bulger as a backup.

                        And.. The draft.

                        Round 1
                        - Ndamukong Suh
                        DT
                        Nebraska

Suh is just what the doctor ordered for this defense. I think they've already got some pieces in place for future success, Suh will be the addition that could make them that much stronger. Suh, Long and Laurinitis is a very solid core, and one that could be dangerous for years to come.

Traditionally, teams don't spend #1 overall picks, and the money associated with it on Defensive Tackles.. Then again, Suh isn't your traditional DT.

                        Round 2
                        - Brandon LaFell
                        WR
                        LSU

I think WR is the biggest weakness on the Rams offense. While I like Donnie Avery, they need more.

I think LaFell could quietly, when it's all said and done, become the best of this class. He has good route running skills and leaping ability; good size; good field vision and body control; has a competitive streak a mile long; is very productive and gets good YPC numbers because of his ability to break tackles and take hits. He's not going to ever win a foot race. He isn't slow by any means, but his timed sped won't ever wow you, however his other intangibles more than make up for the "lack of speed".

He reminds me a large amount of Dwayne Bowe (and not just because both went to LSU). Bowe has quietly had a very good start to his career...

My Mock Draft for NFC West Teams
                        by vanillasue
                        Rams

Objective - With the new QBs in the division that run option now the Rams need to upgrade their defense even more to have fast back side help to chase down and or blitz these QBs. The current thought in the press is to draft an explosive WR in the first round which I believe will be a mistake. Instead, the Rams will use their first round picks on fast guys in the back 7 of the defense. Rams are a confident bunch with arguably the best coach in the league. What he did with inferior talent last year was impressive. Last years draft was excellent for them as 9 of their 10 picks made the team and the top 5 are all substantial contributers. Brockers and Jenkins will be Pro bowlers soon. Look for Pead and Quick to increase their production now that they are free of Jackson and Amedola and Brian Quick is going to be a stud WR.

First off - Sleeper option - I believe the Rams will trade one of their 2 first round picks and try to get a later first round pick with a 2nd round pick to go with it at a minimum. If Sheldon Richardson or Sylvester Williams drops to 16 don't be surprised if the Rams take one of them. Otherwise they will try and trade down for another 2nd so someone else gets him. Richardson and Williams are the real deal and should be a dominate DT for 10 years. Dominate DLs and OLs are hard to find and usually go in the first 8 picks of any draft.

Pick 16 and 22 could go either way, but I think the OL is more important and the OLBs will be there 22.

Pick 16 ( Offensive Line - One of 4 - Either tackle Menelik Watson/FSU or guards Warmack/Bama, Cooper/NC) - They really need to add depth to this line and any of these guys are going to be starting players for 10 years in the NFL. I would not draft a guard here unless I was conviced they are incredible which they say Warmack and Cooper both are. I do NOT like Fluker - He has a hard time staying balanced on his feet. Other option is wait for the 2nd round and get a guy like Kyle Long/Larry Warford if you want a guard.

Pick 22 - (Arthur Brown LB - Kansas State or Alec Ogletree LB Georiga) - I think they try and trade 22 down somewhere between 26 and 35 and get a extra 3rd round pick or they could do the same with Pick 16 and try and get a extra 2nd or 3rd - Brown is a pure stud that moves very fast, sheds blockers easy, runs sideline to sideline with the best of them and will be just what the Rams need to support their very good defensive line by bird dogging Kapernick and Wilson when they even think of taking off. Alec Ogletree is another fast LB I like very much and could be picked at #22 or later on a trade down depending on what they are thinking in the front office.

Guys that can pressure the QB always go high so don't be thinking the Rams can get a stud OLB in the second round. It won't happen.

                        Pick 46...

Justin Blalock, OG, Falcons: We need a mauler and like someone else stated 3 out of the 5 lineman on the Faclons are FA's. Someone will be let go and it looks like Blalock will be the most likely. This fills a huge need.

Sidney Rice, WR, Vikings: We need a big play receiver. We need a #1 who can stretch the field and be a serious threat. We get all of that in Sidney Rice, and the best upside is that he is still young.

                        DRAFT

Well, first off I will say we trade down to #25 with our rival seahawks and receive their 4th and 5th in the process. They need a QB and we will take all the draft picks we can get.

1: Allen Bailey, DE/DT, Miami: This guys a monster. He will fill a big need on the defensive line and would be a great pick up at 25. He is very powerful and would create terror with Chris Long.

2: Mason Foster, OLB, Washington: A very hard worker and is very dedicated. Improved rapidly as the season progressed and fills a huge need. Spags would love to work with this kid.

3: Will Hill, FS, Florida: Good instinctive safety and would hopefully play along side O.J. Nice replacement for Dahl and hopefully will be groomed into a heck of a player. Huge upside and could be the steal of the draft.

4: Kendall Hunter, RB, Oklahoma: We desperately need a change of pace back for Steven and a good receiver. Hunter provides just that and maybe will be our replacement for SJ39 one day.

4: Lee Ziemba, OG/OT, Auburn: A good blocker that we could certainly use. We can try to groom him into a nasty run blocker and he could possibly replace the overpaid Jacob Bell.

5: Ricky Elmore, DE, Arizona- Spags loves to grab young defensive lineman and groom them. Hopefully this will work with James Hall rapidly aging.

5: Brandon Hogan, CB/PR, West Virginia: Good depth, and we can use a special teams returner that has break away speed and can take it to the house. A few character issues though.

7: Robert Hughes, FB, Notre Dame: We need a replacement for Mike Karney. He was either injured or was inactive because he wasn't doing the job. A lot of wear was put on him for a long time. Hes becoming less effective and needs to be replaced.

7: Lawton Scott, NT, Ole Miss: Big beefy guy, and may develop into a solid starter over time.

By: Robert Davis | Updated: 10/20

1.St. Louis - Jake Locker, QB, Washington
Locker has had a meteoric rise up the draft boards this year, and he should continue to rise with more experience in a pro style attack. He has the best blend of natural talent of any of the QB’s this year, along with the toughness and leadership skills. This may be a bit high as of October, but expect Locker to continue to rise and really impress in the post season should he declare.

2.Tampa Bay - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
McCoy is a playmaker on the interior line and players like that will always be in high demand. He could draw a lot of attention at the top overall spot, but the Bucs would love to bring in a player that can impact a game from the DT spot like Warren Sapp once did in Tampa.

3.Kansas City - Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
Berry is arguably the best player in this draft, and a player with his versatility would fit in well with any team. He could play any spot in the secondary and be a pro bowl caliber performer. The Chiefs could use some playmaking ability on the offensive side of the ball or a pass rusher on defense, but Berry is too good to pass up at this spot.

                        4.Oakland - Everson Griffen, DE/OLB, USC
Al Davis has shown to take a liking to players from USC and players who have extraordinary speed for their position. Enter Everson Griffen. His speed for a 270+ lber is amazing. He tops the 270lb mark, but has tremendous speed and athleticism and should have no problem standing up and playing in space. Don’t rule out another Trojan, Taylor Mays, for the same reasons even if they drafted a safety in the second round last year and Michael Huff appears to be coming on.

5.Cleveland - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Just over a year ago, Cleveland had two highly regarded QB’s. Now, they’re looking for a long term answer as both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn have not been able to take hold of the starting position. There are a lot of needs throughout the roster, but you won’t get anywhere without a QB. Bradford has had shoulder problems, but it’s not considered a long term issue.

6.Tennessee - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Suh may not be quite as physically imposing as Albert Haynesworth but he is a force to be reckoned with on the defensive line. Suh is very active and can clog running lanes and get into the backfield and disrupt the action.

7.Detroit - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma St.
There is hope in Detroit. A solid draft last year has at least given the Lions hope for the future. Giving last years top overall pick Matthew Stafford blindside protection is a big concern, as Jeff Backus is up there in age and average at best anyway.

8.Buffalo - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
The Bills did a decent job upgrading the talent on the interior offensive line in the...
