  • Get Scared Vick Haters...

    Per Bernie:

Steve Spagnuolo speaks on Michael Vick: The Rams’ amiable head coach made the rounds in the Super Bowl media center and was asked about the Rams’ interest in Vick, the Philadelphia Eagles’ backup quarterback.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Michael as a player,” Spags said. “Everything I’ve heard out of Philadelphia is kind of good. We haven’t gone down that road in our process yet. I think he’s a terrific player.”

This is interesting because the Spagnuolo style is to say as little as possible about team business. I think it is significant that he praised Vick and offered that he’d heard some good things about him. Actually, I think it’s significant that Spagnuolo said anything; I fully expected the coach to say he could not comment on Vick because Vick was under contract to the Eagles.

But clearly the Rams have interest. As I noted in a blog written earlier this week, I’ve heard that Rams’ assistant coaches have been calling their counterpart in Philly to get info on Vick.

The Rams need a quarterback. The mobile Vick could give them a perimeter game and a deep-pass threat. Vick has said he wants to start but is willing to accept a backup role with the Eagles again in 2010. The Eagles gave Vick a chance after his release from prison. Vick served 23 months for his part in a dogfighting ring. Vick could be released by the Eagles who may prefer to avoid paying a roster bonus. Or, the Eagles could trade Vick for a draft a choice. A market could be forming for Vick; the Buffalo Bills are also said to have interest.
Spags doesn't deny interest once again and speaks how he RESPECTS Vick.

MV will be a Ram in another month like I have been saying for weeks, all people who don't think so can keep telling themselves whatever helps them sleep at night.

Let's reduce this to the actual quote.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Michael as a player,” Spags said. “Everything I’ve heard out of Philadelphia is kind of good. We haven’t gone down that road in our process yet. I think he’s a terrific player.”

Based on the bolded section, it appears we haven't even begun considering Vick. Everything else is Bernie once again demonstrating that he should stick to writing about baseball.

This sounds like a pretty generic quote that could apply to almost any player in the league.

I'm part of the media but it is crazy how much they try to read into everything. He doesn't talk it means this, he says hello it means this, he looked left when he said this it mean that... it is tiring.

Exactly. You have to consider the source of the article. Leave it to Bernie to take an innocuous quote and run wild with it. How many times has he put two and two together and come up with ten?

Eagles QB Vick may be headed to Rams
          By Mark J. Miller

The rumor today being spread, according to Fantasy Football Toolbox, is that the St. Louis Rams are "definitely" the favorite to get Vick this offseason.
Vick knows Rams GM Billy Devaney from when they were both with the Atlanta Falcons. And Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo spent years in Philly and is likely getting first-hand reports from Eagles head coach Andy Reid on whether Vick is worth dealing for or not.
Here's another rumor I found in Yahoo Sports. Vick could be coming. That would be great! I'd rather get Vick than draft another bust! Now we will be solely focused on Suh!!! :ram:

So what do we do in two years when his legs completely give out?

Just to summarize, Spagnuolo was asked specifically about a player, and he was polite. Therefore, he must be planning on trading for said player?

In another thread about an interview with Devaney, this was said:

They asked about Bulger and our QB situation. Devany said that he is a "Bulger fan", but that Marc has been in a bad situation the last few years with a weak/injured O-line and not a lot of talent around him. Devany said that he feels like if Bulger has the right help around him, he has shown he can be successful. To follow up, he was asked if that meant we were sticking with Bulger. He said that it hadn't been decided and what they are doing is looking at free agents and seeing if any of the QBs in the draft are worth the #1 overall pick (to get a starter). He did mention that right now the QB free agent market is not looking all that great. He said that because you are looking for a starter, it would be difficult to find that in free agency. He didn't mention later round QBs.
Sounds to me like Devaney isn't considering Vick.

I'll be glad when rumor season is finally over.:|

I hope we get him. Anything is better than what we have. Lets trade for Troy Smith, while we're at it.

people who completely ignore this are kidding themselves, we will be in need of a qb and he could be one of the better options out there. remember, we're not looking for a qb to sling the ball around like mcnabb all game, and this would be the best running game he's played next to. i don't necessarily like it because i dislike him as a person, but face facts: bulger is going to be gone (period), doesn't look like we'll take a qb round 1, none of the later round prospects look developed enough to start their rookie year, and the free agent qb pool is mediocre at best. if campbell is let go he's probably a better option, but if pennington and garcia retire/go elsewhere i don't see anyone else.

I dont see how he is a better option then bulger, or even Null. Both our #1 and #2 QB's can throw better then Vick, so I dont see the merit in pursing him.

Why is Bulger going to be gone? Thanks to the illustrious efforts of our former President and current Consultant John Shaw as one of the NFL's chief CBA negotiators, the salary cap is no longer an issue, (although it never would have been this offseason) and Bulger has too many financial reasons to keep playing. If we can't secure a better player than Bulger, and odds are we won't (rookies excepted because we should let them sit while we build the rest of the team) we might as well keep him.
