    New draft format can benefit Rams

    Previously the draft was held over two days, a Saturday and a Sunday, with last year seeing the first and second rounds on the Saturday and the remaining rounds on the Sunday

    This year, the draft takes place over three days. Thursday evening will be the first round, Friday the second and third rounds, and the remaining rounds will be on the Saturday.

    Usually between the two days of the draft a team will analyse the players left to pick, analyse those that they have already picked and then re-set their draft board. They may decide that they like one particular player, and go about making trade offers to move up and get him. This is what happened last year between the first and second days of the draft. The New York Jets fell in love with Shonn Greene, and decided that they would have to move up in the draft to take him. The Jets traded their 12th pick in the third round as well as fourth and seventh round picks to move up to the first pick in the third round. Some say this was because the Rams were sure to take Greene if he was still on the board. Its also clear that this trade only happened because the Jets had the night to think on what they wanted with the draft pick.

    This year, with the Rams picking at the top of each round, they pick first on all three days. So if a team has fallen in love with a player and wants to grab him, they could definitely offer the Rams a trade. The second round pick, for example, could garner a lot of interest. Last year the Panther and Broncos both traded future first round picks for second rounders, and the Titans and Jaguars both traded future second rounders to New England for third round picks. Picks higher in the draft are certainly a benefit to a rebuilding team like the Rams

    Also, there are a couple of QB prospects that may be good choices for the Rams in the second round, but who would be reaches if picked right at the top of round 2 (at the moment), but who likely wouldnt last until the top of round 3. Guys like Tony Pike and Dan LeFevour. The Rams could entertain a trade which involves a move down in round two, picking up maybe a third rounder in the process, and still being able to grab their future QB.

    All it takes is a team to think too much overnight, and the Rams could end up with a very good deal on their hands.

      I'd probably still take Shon Greene over D'Andre Levy, Sammie Lee Hill and Lydon Murtha, and I'd bet that given the opportunity, Detroit would have as well.

      I saw Jhavid Best mocked to our fair franchise here at Clanram the other day. There's a back I'll bet Spagnuolo would love to get his hands on.

          Levy isnt bad for Detroit, in fact he is set to be their starting Middle linebacker this upcoming season. Hill was a contributor at the DT spot during his rookie year. So it might not be a totally one sided trade between the Jets and Lions, especially if you remember that Detroit probably didnt need an RB with Kevin Smith there.

          Best would definitely work for me. To be honest im thinking that we have holes all over this team, just as long as we draft someone at each spot that isnt a reach or a project then we should come out of the draft fine

              I've been thinking about this for quite some time myself. I think it's a blessing in disguise. Another thing to bear in mind is that we also acquired a pretty decent looking player (Robinson) by swapping picks with Atlanta just last year. With teams holding onto several would be RFA's maybe there are deals to be had once again by swapping draft spots.

                  I agree that we may be able to trade down a few spots and still get our pick as we may have a grasp at who the bucs/lions/skins may be after.

                      Good point. There definitely could be an advantage to having several hours before making the selections at the top of Round 2 and Round 4 (both in terms of trade talks and evaluating the remaining players).

                                  Can the Rams technically sign their 1st and 33rd pick prior to the draft days? In other words, once the first round selections are complete can we start negotiating with eligible players?

                                      There's been a recent trend of teams taking the guy they want in the early first round and then trading future draft picks to move back into the first round.

                                      Do you like this move for the Rams?

                                      Maybe grab Curry and then move back into the first round to grab William Beatty or even Andre Smith?

                                      Would a move like this require our 1st rounder next year and our second rounder this year or can teams make it work without the 1st rounder?

                                      What are the odds that something like Pace, Holt and a second moves us back into the first?

                                      With the new format being three days now it really benfits the Rams with the #1 overall pick in each round. The Rams have Bradford likely pegged at #1 overall (I still like Suh but Bradford is just as deserving). The first round intrigue will be if Cleveland wants to trade up and get him or not and if the Rams want to trade back into the first round for a player they like. If Cleveland does trade up it will make the rest of the draft interesting. What players will be at #7 and who would we take? If the trade happened we would likely add another second and third rounder as well. That would give us two high second rounders and two third rounders. That would give us four picks on the second day. Having the 1st pick in the second round makes it interesting and will keep us on the edge of our seats as players are falling day 1 of the draft there is a chance of us trading back into the first round for a player that falls (we tried it with J. Lau last year but he still fell to us). If we stand pat with the second rounder we will have a full day for trying to work out a deal for either more picks or more picks and a player. Say Cleveland don't trade with us in the first, passes on QB in the first, and Colt McCoy is on the board in the second round after we took Bradford in the first. Cleveland may decide to trade up to our spot to get McCoy possibly giving us one of their three third rounders as well as their second. The fourth round of the draft will start on day 3 with our selection. It again gives the Rams a full day to work out a deal after teams restack their draft board. It might be an ideal chance for us to trade our fourth round pick for a proven NFL player. Maybe even package our fourth round pick with a guy like Barron or Carriker in trade.

                                      Teams Unwilling To Deal Second Rounders In This Draft

                                      Even the Falcon's supposed push for Clowney seems to be less likely because of the value of high picks this year, especially second round picks.

                                      However, I do see teams giving up #3 and/or #4 picks to move up in round one, especially ones like the Niners with extra three's.

                                      So how far can a team move up with just a third round pick as the extra for the team trading down?

                                      According to the trade chart, the Niners could move up from 30 to 21 for just one of their higher extra #3 picks. Two thirds would get them as high as 17.

                                      The cost to get to the top 14 or so will be much higher in this draft.


                                      Say a team wants to get above Cleveland at 26 to get a QB. The cost for say the Texans at 33 to get to 26 would be a four and a five. They could get to pick 17 just for their third rounder. according to the chart.


                                      As long as the cost is just a third or less, or picks in 2015, teams will be looking hard to move up, but I can't see a lot of second rounders flying in deals around this year, which isn't great for the Rams.

                                      However, even adding a high third in a short deal down could allow the Rams to get a really good QB there.

                                      Trade Down Scenario Gives Rams 'Wild Card"

                                      The Rams have lots of picks after round four to add practically any need they have, and no doubt they may package late picks to move up, as they did to get Zac Stacy.

                                      However, the top five picks seem locked into a tackle, free safety, cornerback, linebacker and guard.

                                      Those needs are so great that even if a rasty player at another position with less need, like, say a quarterback, it would be hard to take that guy in the top three round for sure.

                                      There are 12 to 14 passers with top three round grades, so in round four, the Rams should have one there.

                                      However, adding a second round pick or a high third rounder, could put the ams in play for a better tier of passers.

                                      So if the Rams trade down and add a second, it leaves that extra pick or their own pick at 44 open to really look hard at a Mettenberger or Garopollo or McCarron with that "Wild Card pick".

                                      If the Rams don't get a shot at those three second rier guys with those second rounders, or there are guys too good to pass up to fill th needs first, it still leaves the early third rounder open to look at that next tier, guys like Logan Thomas, David Fales, Tom Savage, Aaron Murray, or Taj Boyd, who most likely will be gone by the Rams fourth round pick.

                                      GMs like to look at added picks as a chance to really take a chance on a player with big upseide, like Janoris Jenkins was. You will see top teams taking some of these passers no later than round three, knowing they may get a first rounder for that guy in a couple years, if they don't need a QB then.

                                      With the Rams having so many later picks to use on guys like that, extra picks in the top 90 might go for that QB, or a WR, RB, or DT, positions that seem unlikely to be taken early now.

                                      The only question is, whether adding this "WIld Card" scenario is worth a drop from the #2 player to , say the 6th best, or from the 13th to the 20th.

                                      As of now, my "Plan A" for the first round of the draft remains the same. A.J. Green will be gone, but if either Julio Jones or Justin Blackmon (if he declares) is available, I think the Rams can fill their biggest need while also adhering to a BPA philosophy.

                                      But what if Blackmon returns to OSU (seems to be leaning that way) and Jones is already gone?

                                      "Plan B" may very well be a trade down for extra picks.

                                      There are a couple of reasons why this would make sense.

                                      First, unlike the last three years, when the Rams selected 2nd, 2nd and 1st, the 14th pick is an attractive trade target. It is high enough to obtain a potentially elite player (though perhaps not at a position the Rams might need, i.e. QB, OT), but low enough that it would not force a team to pay outrageous (i.e. Top 10) money to a rookie.

                                      Second, if the Rams can't get one of the "Big 3" WRs, the next tier at that position will likely be rated as players who should go in the pick 25-50 range (i.e. Jonathan Baldwin, Leonard Hankerson, Greg Little).

                                      Possible trade partners?

                                      There's New England, which has their first pick (which will be between 29-32) and the first pick in the second round.

                                      There's also Denver, which has the 4th and 14th picks of the second round.

                                      Either of these teams could offer a package that would be fairly even under the "Trade Value Chart." In fact, any team willing to offer a late first round pick and a second round (perhaps enhanced by a "day 3" pick) could offer a reasonable package.

                                      This will be new territory for Devaney and Co., as they have not made any major draft day trades.

                                      This could be the year it happens.
