  • Av's 2010 Rams Draft Board (Post-Combine)

    Time for another update:

    1. Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska (Previous Rank: 1)
    2. Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma (Previous Rank: 2)

    3. Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma (Previous Rank: 4)
    4. C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson (Previous Rank: 6)
    5. Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech (Previous Rank: 3)
    6. Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida (Previous Rank: N/A)
    7. Eric Berry, S, Tennessee (Previous Rank: 8)
    8. Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame (Previous Rank: 9)
    9. Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State (Previous Rank: 7)
    10. Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas (Previous Rank: N/A)

    Comments:

Suh's Combine performance confirmed his right to hold on to the top spot. Bradford is a close second, and his value is enhanced every time a tier 2 QB has a bad day. McCoy jumps above Morgan due to the latter's weigh-in (266 lbs.) which raised some minor concerns. Pierre-Paul, on the other hand, shocked me by weighing in at a 270 which, along with his speed and quickness, makes for an intriguing package. Berry is back as my top DB after a disappointing peformance by Joe Haden, who drops out of my Top 10. Clausen and Bryant really did nothing at the Combine, and will both have to impress in Pro Day workouts. Kindle is a newcomer to my list. I see a lot of Leonard Little in him, in terms of a player who could gain some bulk and continue to play DE in a 4-3, as he did in college.

Av I like your draft board and pre-Bradford workout I think you are spot on. A question in theory: If we end up signing Robinson (reports of him meeting with Spags) do you see the top DT's drop back on the draft board?

No. I see the recent signings (Feeley, Robbins) as short term fixes to prevent the Rams from having to reach with their first pick.

        Time for an update.

While the Rams have the first pick, its still important to have a draft board to account for the possiblity of a trade (either down from pick 1, or up to get a second first round pick), as well as the chance that a player could fall to selection #33.

        1. Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska (Previous Rank: 2)

With Jake Locker going back to school, Suh slides into the first spot. I doubt he'll move from there. I still like Morgan over McCoy due to his pass rushing abilities. The newest member of my board is Joe Haden, who recently declared. I think he is a potential superstar at the CB spot. I've moved down the QBs, as both have a lot of question marks. With Bradford (who I've now jumped ahead of Clausen), its all about his shoulder. If it checks out and he throws well, he could climb the board. Clausen could go either way for me. If he is as undersized as I suspect he is, he could fall out of my Top 10.

        Time for another update!

My thought process on this has changed a bit, so here are my new rankings:

        Comments
At this point, I'm looking at the options as being one of the following: (1) take Suh with the first pick, (2) take Bradford with the first pick, or (3) trade down and take Bradford.

The third option is very tempting, but has three problems. First, the Rams would obviously need a trading partner. Would Tampa give up a 2nd round pick (plus other picks) to move up 2 spots? Who knows? Second, if the Rams trade down to No. 3, they risk a scenario in which the Redskins might trade up to No. 2 if they really want Bradford (while the Rams would still get a great prospect and have an extra 2nd round pick under that scenario, it would not be the intended result). Finally, if the Rams trade down, they lose the opportunity to pre-sign their selection.

Some will undoubtedly question why I've moved Bradford to No. 2 while leaving Jimmy Clausen at No. 9. The answer is that I just don't have the same feeling about Clausen. When I've seen him play, he just didn't stand out to me as a guy who makes you say "Wow. That guy's going to be playing on Sundays.) Bradford - before the injury - was that kind of player in my eyes.

Finally, I've dropped Terrence Cody from the list. While I think he can be a good player, I wonder how much a guy with such liitations is really worth. Iupati strikes me as a guy with Steve Hutchinson type potential at OG, and who also could be a very good starting RT.

Next update will be in March after the Combine.

Av's First Official 2010 Rams Draft Board (12/2/09)
        by AvengerRam_old
I'm going to do five of these (one each month) between now and the draft. As this is my first official board, here are a few ground rules. First, I am, at this stage, projecting that certain underclassmen will declare. Second, I see two scenarios here: (1) draft a franchise QB in Round 1, or (2) draft a DL in Round 1 and wait until Round 2 or 3 to take a QB. I'm still straddling that fence, as you will soon see.

So, with those thoughts in mind, here is my Top 10:

        1. Jake Locker, QB, Washington
Right now, I see Locker as the only potential franchise QB in the draft. He has elite physical tools. His production has not been overwhelming. The question that must be answered through due diligence is whether his lack of production is the product of underdeveloped skills or poor talent around him. His grasp on my top spot is tenuous, at best.

        2. Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
He could be a definite difference maker on the DL, and he fits the mold of quick DTs who peformed well in Spagnuolo's Giant defenses. At this point, he's probably the most certain top 3 pick among all prospects.

        3. Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Surprised? Trust me, you won't be in the coming months. This guy has the size (6'4, 272) and productivity (12 sacks so far this year) you look for in a pass rushing prospect. He also seems to have the intangibles the Rams will be looking for, which will elevate him above guys like Carlos Dunlap and Greg Hardy. Look for him to be a star at the Combine.

        4. Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
This is a good year at the top of the draft for DTs. McCoy rates only a hair or two below Suh, and could be just as good as a pro. A sure fire top 5 pick absent a major bump in the evaluation process.

        5. Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
But, Av... you said there was only one potential franchise QB in the draft. Yes, that is what I believe. But I could be wrong. I want to see how Clausen measures (is he really 6'3?) and what the scouts really think of his arm strength. His game films and stats are impressive, though.

        6. Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
But, Aaaaavvvvvvvvv.... Yeah, yeah, I know. Look, when this season started Bradford was the concensus No. 1 overall. If he's healthy and tests well, you can't count him out. Still, that whole spread offense against Big 12 defenses thing worries me.

        7. C.J.Spiller, RB, Clemson
Yes, I know the Rams don't really need a RB (at least not a starter). But Spiller, in my opinion, is much more than just a RB. I think he can do everything that Percy Harvin can do, and more. He's that good.

        8. Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
This would be a different approach, but if the Rams win a few more games and are picking in the 7-10 range, Bryant would be a very good option. He could really elevate the WR corps and make the QB's job much easier.

        9. Eric Berry, S,...

Av's 2011 Rams Draft Board (Final* Version)
        by AvengerRam_old
I'm calling this my "Final*" version because I could be forced to revise this if there is a flurry of FA activity before the draft (unlikely, but not impossible).

So, here's my rankings of players I think the Rams should consider:

        1. Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
        Previous Rank: 1
I still have Jones as my top choice. While no player is a "sure thing," there are just so many things to like about Jones. I truly believe he would instantly change the Rams' offense for the better.

        2. A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
        Previous Rank: 2
Everything I said about Jones is pretty much true about Green. I have Jones a smidge higher simply because of his size and what I see as untapped potential. But, believe me, its a toss-up between the two.

        3. Patrick Peterson, DB, LSU
        Previous Rank: 3
It is tough to find a flaw in Peterson's size/speed ratio or performance in college. I have read a couple of criticisms about him being overly aggressive, but I'll take that trade-off (of course, as is true with several players on this list, the Rams will likely have no shot of obtaining Peterson at pick #14).

        4. Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
        Previous Rank: 5
Kurt Warner said in a recent interview that the difference between average/good teams and great teams is playmakers. Miller, by all accounts, has the potential to be a pass rushing terror.

        5. Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
        Previous Rank 8
Here's another example of a player who has come through the pre-draft scrutiny pretty much "clean." I don't necessarily see a Ngata or Suh here, but Dareus should be a very good starting player who can be an anchor in a top defense.

        6. Cameron Jordan, DE, California
        Previous Rank 7
Every year, there's a guy who EVERYONE is talking about during Senior Bowl week. This year, that guy was Jordan. I'd love to see what Spagnuolo could do ith him.

        7. Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
        Previous Rank: 6
Why has Fairley dropped? I think there is a concern about his character and possibly his work ethic. But, make no mistake... he was as dominant a defensive player as there was last year in college.

        8. Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
        Previous Rank: 3
Its hard not to be worried about his knee. Then again, it wouldn't shock me if this ends up being a complete "red herring" (I'm reminded of the knee "issues" that Adrian Peterson had before he was drafted).

        9. Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri
        Previous Rank: 10
Smith is viewed as unpolished, but he could end up being the top pass rusher in this draft. I'll take a chance on that kind of upside.

        10. Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois
        Previous Rank: N/A
New to the list, I'm starting to warm to Liuget as a prospect. I have little doubt he could beat out Ryan and/or Gibson for a starting...

Av's Rams Draft Board (Version 2.0)
        by AvengerRam_old
My initial draft board, which I compiled at the end of the college season, has changed quite a bit. Some players (i.e. Justin Blackmon) elected to stay in school, while others have dropped off my list due to Senior Bowl or Combine performances.

As always, this is the order I rank the prospects for the Rams. As a result, quarterbacks, centers, fullbacks, middle linebackers, kickers and punters need not apply!

        My current Top 15:

        1. Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
        Previous Rank: 4
That's right. I'm not afraid to say it. I am ranking Julio Jones ahead of A.J. Green. I'm certain I'm in the minority there, but I truly think that Jones is going blossom as a pro. Running a 4.39 with a broken foot doesn't hurt either.

        2. A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
        Previous Rank: 1
For those who still are in Green's corner, don't worry, I haven't abandoned him. He is a great prospect and I'd love to see him in a Rams uniform.

        3. Patrick Peterson, DB, LSU
        Previous Rank: 6
DB is pretty down on my "need" list, but Peterson, in my book, could be a special player. On the BPA side of the coin, he's my number 1 prospect in the draft. I think he'll have the impact comparable to the top DBs in the league.

        4. Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
        Previous Rank: 2
I have him at the top of my list of DL prospects. He is, in my opinion, the top 4-3 pass rusher in the draft.

        5. Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
        Previous Rank: N/A
The only hesitation with Miller is that his most obvious fit would be in a 3-4 scheme. Forget that. He has all the tools necessary to be a disruptive force in any scheme.

        6. Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
        Previous Rank: 3
If an opening day DL of Hall, Fairley, Robbins and Long does not make you drool, have your saliva glands tested.

        7. Cameron Jordan, DE, California
        Previous Rank: N/A
Another player who some have pegged as a 3-4 guy, but that I see as a player who would fit in any scheme. In the Spags defense, think Justin Tuck.

        8. Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
        Previous Rank: N/A
Dareus is a player who is rising in my mind. I can see him fitting in very well with the Rams.

        9. Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue
        Previous Rank: N/A
Kerrigan surprised many at the Combine. Some had presumed his great college productivity (37.5 sacks, 55.5 tackles for loss in four years) to a "great motor" (code for "marginal athlete"). Then he came in at 267 lbs, ran a 4.71, and had 31 reps on the bench. Guess this guy is an athlete too.

        10. Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri
        Previous Rank: N/A
Some prospects "just fit. Smith is one of them. I could see him being plugged in opposite Chris Long from day 1 (or, at least, rotating with James Hall, who can also rotate to DT) and producting...
