  • Rams Close to Deal With Giants DT Robbins..

    By Jim Thomas
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Rams were in the process Saturday night of finalizing a deal that would bring veteran NY Giants defensive tackle Fred Robbins to St. Louis.

Robbins, who turns 33 later this month, is 6-4 and 325 pounds.

He’s known as a stout as a run defender who can play nose tackle or 3-technique defensive tackle.

“We’re determined to get bigger up front,” one Rams official said.

If the negotiations culminate as expected, Robbins was expected to travel to St. Louis on Sunday to finalize the deal.

Team sources also said they have no interest in Arizona safety Matt Ware, as had been speculated earlier.

Robbins would be the Rams’ second free-agent signing since the FA period began at midnight Friday. The first player signed, quarterback A.J. Feeley, to a two-year deal reportedly worth around $6 million. A Rams source said the team liked Feeley because he fits the Rams’ offensive system, and he showed superior arm strength during preseason play last summer.

A NT? I would prefer if we grabbed a slimmer, faster UT to get more pass rush.

Hmmmm, if he wasn't 33 yrs. old I'd say his was a sure fire sign that we are drafting a QB, but this is a depth move as far as I am concerned. Not to mention, he's been known to be a slacker at times & lacking motivation.

                      Heres what rotoworld says:

Rams agreed to terms with DT Fred Robbins on a three-year contract worth up to $12 million.

Robbins was an impact pass rusher between 2006-2008, racking up 18 sacks during those three seasons in New York. He was mostly a non-factor last year, however, managing a pair of sacks in 16 games after offseason microfracture surgery. The deal likely is heavy on incentives. The Rams would be lucky to get 25-30 quality snaps a game out of the 33-year-old.

Could the "we're being smart by not dropping big money on aging FAs crowd" shut up now? Or do we need to make another former Eagle or Giant in their early 30s rich for that to register?

how is this not a smart move? which free agent defensive tackle would you rather have signed? Robbins was one of the best available and his connections with Spagnuolo only made it easier to sign him

                            From the Rams site;

                            By Nick Wagoner
                            Senior Writer

The Rams added another piece, a big piece, to their defensive line Monday, signing mammoth defensive tackle Fred Robbins.

Robbins came to St. Louis over the weekend for a visit and was clearly a priority for coach Steve Spagnuolo and the team.

The arrival of Robbins in St. Louis comes on the heels of the past six seasons spent in New York. It was there that Robbins emerged as a mainstay of the Giants’ defensive line and first worked with Spagnuolo.

“I am very happy we were able to get this deal done with Fred,” Spagnuolo said. “He is a player I am familiar with and he is a veteran who has been very productive on some very good defenses. He will add leadership to our defense and depth to the defensive tackle position.”

In two years under Spagnuolo – then the Giants defensive coordinator – Robbins had two of his finest seasons, posting 5.5 sacks in each year and combining for 79 tackles, 32 quarterback hurries and 19 quarterback hits in those two seasons.

“I’m excited to join the Rams and I’m really looking forward to playing for Coach Spagnuolo again,” Robbins said. “The two seasons I spent with Coach Spagnuolo were two of the best years of my career. He’s a great coach.”

Robbins’ performance earned him the role of captain on New York’s defense where he was regularly looked to for leadership. Robbins spent his first four seasons in Minnesota where he showed enough promise to be coveted by the Giants in 2004.

Since he started getting regular playing time in his second season (2001), Robbins has missed just three games of a possible 144 in that span.

At 6’4, 325 pounds, Robbins has the size and versatility to play the nose tackle and the three technique positions, the type of versatility Spagnuolo covets in a defensive lineman.

Robbins, 32, was originally a second-round pick of Minnesota out of Wake Forest. In 10 seasons, he’s amassed 28.5 sacks.

I'd have rather drafted one than opt for the quick fix.

Reuniting with coach Steve Spagnuolo? The Rams aim to get bigger upfront, and Robbins (6'4/325) would provide a presence at the 3-technique tackle. If healthy, Robbins would be a boon to the team's run defense.

                                Will Canty push Robbins out?

                                Update: 4:55 p.m.
It’s starting to look like before the end of the day, Cowboys defensive lineman Chris Canty will be a Giant. “There’s a chance,” his agent, Brad Blank, told me a few minutes ago.
And that just can’t be good news for veteran defensive tackle Fred Robbins.
Something’s got to give, as several NFL sources have told me in the last few hours, if the Giants sign the 26-year-old Canty, and it appears the 31-year-old Robbins might be it. Nobody can imagine the Giants sticking with all four veteran defensive tackles in a rotation that would include Canty, Robbins, Barry Cofield and the newly signed Rocky Bernard.
For one thing, it would be ridiculously expensive — about $12.5 million between the four of them, assuming Canty gets his $6 million per year and Bernard, as reported elsewhere, got about $4 million per year (Robbins is due $2 million in 2009 and Cofield is due $530,000). For another thing, while the depth is nice, playing time would become an issue. At most they’d average 20 snaps per player, per game (remember, DE Justin Tuck will figure into the DT rotation on passing downs), and they don’t need to spend that much money on what essentially would become a group of part-time players.
That’s why it was so hard to believe, at first, that the Giants would go hard after Canty. But apparently they are. In the last two hours, Canty’s agent, Brad Blank, has confirmed that he and the Giants are well into their contract talks. He got an offer from the Giants, sent them a counter-propsal, and now he’s awaiting a response from them.
According to one source familiar with the talks, the two sides are within striking distance of each other, though they still have a little bit of work to do on how much Canty will get up front. I haven’t yet nailed down any numbers, but sources around the league — away from the negotiations — keep throwing out that $6 million per year average.
Update: Blank, in an interview with Scout.com (you need a subscription to access it), said the Giants’ offer was “very decent.” He also added that “even though the Giants have signed a defensive lineman (DT Rocky Bernard), they’ve offered Chris substantially more than what they signed the other guy for and they still lust after Chris.”
If the Giants and Canty can’t work out a deal, Blank said his client will hope a flight to Green Bay, where the Packers have been getting more and more interested by the day. The Seattle Seahawks had a visit with Canty planned for Monday, but they canceled earlier today, Blank said, after they signed former Packers DT Colin Cole to a five-year, $21 million deal with $5 million guaranteed.
That’s an average of $4.2 million for Cole, by the way, and he’s not in Canty’s class. So $6 million per year might end up being a low guess.
The Giants don’t have to cut Robbins...

On his website, Fred Robbins Official Website, is a feature called "Ask Fred," in which fans can e-mail questions to the veteran Rams defensive tackle.

Interesting, because Robbins holds another version of Ask Fred just about every day at Rams Park. The 33-year-old Robbins is surrounded by pups in the locker room. Six of his nine defensive linemates had two years or less of NFL experience entering this season. Three are rookies. And they have plenty of questions.

"It's like on pass rush, or run block situations, he'll give me his ins and outs — whatever he knows," rookie defensive end Eugene Sims said. "And I just take it and try to use it."

Or they may ask how to watch game film. What to look for on tape. How to stay healthy. How to eat right. And when Robbins talks ...

"It's short but sweet," Sims said. "He knows what he's talking about. He ain't been in it for 11 years for nothing. He knows what he's doing."

                                There's personality behind the presence.

"He's just a happy, energetic kind of guy," safety Craig Dahl said. "Always in a good mood. Always willing to pick up a teammate if he sees someone struggling. Fred's just a big jolly guy."

But Santa Claus is a big, jolly guy. And Santa can't play defensive tackle in the NFL. Robbins can. In fact, he's doing it better than anyone — perhaps even coach Steve Spagnuolo — expected back in March when the Rams signed him to a free-agent deal.

On a star-studded New York Giants defensive line that included luminaries such as Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiori, Robbins was the unheralded anchor in the middle during the team's Super Bowl championship run three seasons ago.

But then Robbins started to break down. He battled his way through 2008 with two broken hands and a shoulder injury, then had offseason knee surgery. Last season, he was replaced in the Giants' starting lineup over the final third of the season.

So far in St. Louis, Robbins has been revitalized. At the defensive tackle position, stats rarely tell the story. By the numbers, Robbins has nine tackles, one sack, three quarterback hits and two pass breakups this season. (OK, and that costly shove of Bruce Gradkowski in Game 2 at Oakland that resulted in an unnecessary roughness penalty.)

But take it from Dahl, who also was Robbins' teammate for two seasons with the Giants:

"You would never know Fred's as old as he is. He uses a lot of his experience to his advantage, too. He was able to read that screen last week. Sniff that out."

With the Seahawks desperately trying to get back in the game in the fourth quarter, Robbins dropped speedy Leon Washington in his tracks for no gain on a screen pass...

I wasn't around here when it happened, and I didn't get a chance to hear what yall thought about it. This guy was a monster on the Giants, but he is getting up there in age. He will hopefully have a couple great seasons and not be another La'Roi Glover type player for us.
