  • Willie Parker to visit Rams

    Willie Parker still waits
Posted by Mike Florio on March 17, 2010 8:36 PM ET
Not long ago, Willie Parker was regarded as one of the best young tailbacks in the NFL. But then, late in the 2007 season, he broke a leg against the Rams, and he really hasn't been the same since.

In 2008, injuries limited Parker to 11 games, and he rushed for under 800 yards for the first time since his rookie year of 2004. Last year, he lost his starting job after three games -- and he never started again.

One of the younger free-agent tailbacks on the market, Parker has generated little interest in free agency. He visited the Redskins, who later signed Larry Johnson.

Now, he'll be visiting the team against which his career became derailed more than two years ago: the Rams. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the visit will occur on Thursday and Friday.

In St. Louis, Parker would serve as a backup to Steve Jackson. And this suggests that Parker has given up on any shot at being the top dog in 2010, or beyond.

If hes healthy, he his a good lightning to Steven Jackson's thunder. I like it. That way we could do more with the 2nd rounder.

Noooo. The guy is washed up and fumbles more than AP. Bring in Fargas!

Does Parker have good hands as far as receiving goes? If not I'll take a pass.

Hes a vet. FA, which is what we need behind SJ imo. He has some issues but he would be a lighter quicker counter to SJ. I think this could be a good move, and would become 1 less spot we have to draft for this year.

you not mistaking Parker for Mendenhall by any chance?...Mendenhall has had troubles holding onto the ball.

if not..some stats to back up that claim would be useful.

Could be a short term fix, but I'd rather just draft someone.

I'd go with the short term fix because we have more positions where we are more dire need of a long term fix WR, QB, TE, DL, WLB to name a few.

I wouldn't mind if we signed Parker. Would compliment Steven Jackson well.

Signing parker would be a solid move for the Rams, free's up our 2nd / 3rd round draft pick that we would have used and we get a running back to compliment Jackson. Barring the price of his signature, i'd sign him in a cyber heart beat. i didnt think parker would be interested here in a non-featured role, so i excluded him along with LT, TJ, LJ & BW. Although i'd rather have westbrook over Parker.

I like this idea. As long as it doesn't cut into Kenneth Darby's carries:|.

I'd rather get a young game breaker in this draft that is deep in runningbacks and has guys like jahvid best. I want short term fixes in the linebacking core or at safety or something. Not really at runningback.

Willie Parker will be 30 in November and has already shown signs of hitting that wall and hasn't been the same guy since 08'. If he's signed so be it, but id rather get a genuine game breaker.

But we have Jackson... I realize he isn't going to play forever, but imo we have plenty of time to draft his heir. We don't need a long term replacement at BACKUP running back. This team has so many holes, we need to fill some in ways other than the draft.

Checked on NFL.com, AP has 20 fumbles in his career, Parker has 17.

Also Jackson has 20 in his career, so yeah, not everyone is Marshall Faulk. 'Backs fumble, it sucks. But Fast Willie doesn't fumble any more than the best.

Yeah none of the guys are Marshall Faulk, since Faulk had 36 career fumbles

                                by rams_man13
According to Adam Schefter: "Steelers free agent RB Willie Parker is scheduled to visit the Rams on Thursday and Friday. Parker already has visited with the Redskins."

I wouldn't mind this signing for the right price, he's proven he can be a pretty good RB under a decent o-line. He's 29, but has only had 1,200 carries in his career, so that's not to bad either.

Rams getting plenty of visitors these days

Willie Parker liked his visit with the Rams. But do the Rams like Parker enough to offer him a free-agent contract?

"Willie enjoyed the visit, enjoyed the coaches and the people he met," said Parker's agent, Douglas Hendrickson. "He liked the possibility of teaming up with Steven Jackson in the backfield."

Hendrickson will continue to talk with the Rams next week. But Parker came and went without a contract offer from St. Louis, as apparently was the case with four other free agents who visited Rams Park on Thursday and Friday.

The others were cornerback Kevin Dockery of the New York Giants, fullback Jason McKie of Chicago and defensive ends Reggie Hayward of Jacksonville and Jimmy Wilkerson of Tampa Bay.

It's unusual for so many visits to be squeezed into such a tight time period. But the Rams were caught between the crunch of pro days for draft prospects and next week's NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla. The Rams may not necessarily be in a hurry to sign any of these free agents, but they wanted to at least meet with them and have them take physicals.

Indications are that the Rams intend to find a strong backup to Jackson in the backfield. It's supposed to be a deep draft at the position, but if the Rams think highly enough of Parker it puts less pressure on them to select a running back during the three-day draft April 22-24.

At cornerback, Dockery was not tendered by the Giants as a restricted free agent this offseason. In four years with the team, Dockery seemingly had carved a niche as a special teams player, nickel cornerback and spot starter.

He had five starts combined in 2007 and '08 when Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo was the Giants' defensive coordinator. At 5-10, 188 pounds, Dockery has 10 career starts and three career interceptions, and has scored two touchdowns — one on an interception return and one on a blocked field goal.

At defensive end, the visits by Hayward and Wilkerson may be an indication that the Rams aren't optimistic about the chances of veteran free agents Leonard Little and James Hall returning.

Wilkerson, 29, spent his first five NFL seasons with Kansas City before coming into his own in Tampa Bay in 2008 and '09. He had only one career sack to show for his time with the Chiefs but in Tampa Bay had five sacks in '08 and six last season — his first season as a full-time starter.

Wilkerson suffered a season-ending knee injury in Game 15 last season and had surgery in January. Rams doctors were said to be impressed with how far along Wilkerson is...

                                UPDATE: WILLIE PARKER free
                                by sosa39rams
The Washington Redskins released veteran running back Willie Parker on Saturday, according to the Washington Post, citing a league source.

Parker rushed 16 times for 50 yards in four preseason games with the team, often lost in a crowded Redskins backfield that included veterans Larry Johnson and Clinton Portis.

Parker, 29, played six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning two Super Bowl rings. He has three 1,200-yard seasons, but he ran for just 389 yards last year as a backup.

"It's only one ball," Parker told the Post earlier this summer. "So therefore, you know [there] probably cant be enough room for all of us. That's the game. That's the way it is. Therefore, you got to go out and compete. ... There ain't even enough balls in practice."

Should we pounce? This could be a good addition. Also WR Matt Jones is free although I wouldn't look into that.

                                NFL.com Wire Reports

Running back Brian Westbrook was medically cleared during his weekend visit with the Rams, but he left town still weighing his options, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday.

"He wanted to go back (home) and think it over," Rams general manager Billy Devaney told the newspaper Monday. "We're just taking it one step at a time right now."

The Rams are seeking running back depth behind starter Steven Jackson. Kenneth Darby, a three-year pro with 61 NFL carries, is the most experienced backup currently on the roster.

Westbrook, 30, suffered two concussions last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, who released him this offseason despite his standing as the franchise's career leader in yards from scrimmage (9,785). He also ranks second in rushing yards (5,995) and third in receptions (426).

After suffering his first concussion Oct. 26 against the Washington Redskins, Westbrook missed two games, then returned for a Nov. 16 contest in San Diego. However, Westbrook suffered another concussion against the Chargers and didn't return until Week 16.

Westbrook, who also has dealt with knee, rib, ankle and foot injuries over the years, said he returned too soon from his first concussion.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
