  • Eight First Round Mocks: Who Can And Will Affect The Rams In Round Two

My approach to this offseason has been more reserved than in years past. Rather than posting a number of mocks over the course of the season, I have decided to follow the formula I laid out last season in my Five First Round Mocks thread. From here, looking at feedback on possibilities, probabilities as well as changing stock, I am planning to release two or three mocks before day one of the Draft, my last on Draft Day Eve.

I had the intention of doing six mock drafts in order to look at who can alter what the Rams could do in round two, with three mocks dedicated to Sam Bradford at #1 overall and 3 to Suh. It became apparent that this was not enough. There were still scenarios I wanted to explore and further research to be completed. This resulted in another two mock drafts, one for each candidate at #1 overall. Without saying much further, I'll post each mock as well as a list of (in my opinion) the BPA's available at the end of each round. I'll write my own comments and conclusions at the end.

What I'd like from you is a little feedback. Which Scenario is most realistic and why?

    NOTES:
    • I've tried to be as realistic as possible with my projections based on my own presuppositions of who should go where. That's why there's an even amount of scenarios where the Rams take Suh and Bradford, but, for example, there's only one (to the best of my knowledge) scenario where the Seahawks select Jimmy Clausen.
    • With that said, there are a number of players who I feel I've projected poorly. Dan Williams comes to mind immediately and I'm sure there are others. I can see him at 12, 15, 20 and I feel he should be taken among the first 20-25 picks. For some reason he falls a lot to the end of round one (and even out of it in one scenario). There are a lot of projections I need to finalise.
    • In the event that we select Suh, Colt McCoy should also be considered among the Best Players Available. Consider that an oversight.
    • In the interests of fairness, I won't vote in the Poll.

BBQ'S CONCLUSIONS AND ROUND 2 BIG FIVE:
    • Judging by these results, there are a number of fringe players who have not made the cut into round one in any of these mocks but I would strongly consider in round two. The most notable of these is Jhavid Best, as well as USC'S OT Charles Brown.
    • The good news appears to be that seeing as we have so many holes to fill, we won't have a great deal of difficulty finding a good fit in terms of need and value in round two. I'm not opposed to the idea of 2 Defensive Linemen in the first two rounds if it means Suh and Griffen or Hughes.
    • The teams I think can have the most to say about who we pick in round two are the Patriots, Packers, Eagles, Cardinals and Ravens. That five pick stretch in the late first will go a long way to determining who will be the Rams pick in round two. All teams share common needs with the Rams, namely along the OL, at TE and at DE. In my opinion, the best case scenario for the Rams is for these teams to pick outside of our need pool. Obviously they won't ALL do this, but it is foreseeable that Green Bay and Arizona could chase a 3-4 edge rusher, Baltimore a corner, Philly an OT (as opposed to DE) etc etc.

My Big Five in round two are:
    • Charles Brown, OT, USC
    • Jhavid Best, RB, California
    • Everson Griffen, DE, USC
    • Mourkice Pouncey, OG/C, Florida
    • Jerry Hughes, DE, TCU

Oklahoma's Jermaine Gresham is a narrow 6th due to my own prejudices about his injury status. I'd be happy with any of the above in round two and they're listed in no particular order.

So there you go, Clannies! Have at it, and please leave me with some feedback. It's taken the best part of a week.

I like Jerry Hughes. I think he will be a very good pass rusher in the NFL.

I went with Bradford, and I know about his injuries but Gresham would be my 2nd pick. I just like the idea of bringing Bradford up with someone hes comfortable with and I think that would hasten his transition into the NFL.

Re: Eight First Round Mocks: Who Can And Will Affect The Rams In Round Two

I went with Mock #8-Bradford and Gresham. If, as I suspect, Gresham is not there, I would be pleased to select Everson Griffen if possible. I'm not sold at this point on RB unless somehow-miracle of miracles-Ryan Mathews should slip to the 2nd round.

Overall I think you've done a good job, Bar-bq, as the scenarios you have laid out all seem viable at this point in the process.

        Time will tell.

        WHAT SAY YE?

I Like Hughes and Gresham at the top of the second otherwise we have a pretty valuable pick so trade down.

your best 5 available in all the drafts are very subjective.

            Benn may be taken there....

or many others you can't limit to 5....

I personally wouldn't go anywhere near Benn at the top of the second round and that's why he's not listed among the top 5 that I have available at the beginning of the second.

Certainly there are other players to consider and that's why the '5' fluctuates (although there is most certainly a consensus core group).

Me too. I think he might be best suited as a 3-4 OLB but that's ultimately for the coaches to decide.

Overall I think you've done a good job, Bar-bq, as the scenarios you have laid out all seem viable at this point in the process.

              Time will tell.

Thanks! I would not be opposed to either Gresham or Griffen in the second. I think both have some significant upside; Griffen in particular could become one of our most valued and consistent DE's.

What about drafting Demaryous Thomas WR.

                Rd 1 QB Bradford
Rd 2 Trade down to Cleveland for one of there extra third round picks. Pick 6 from Browns Demaryous Thomas WR.

I quite like Thomas, but I don't know how willing Cleveland would be to trade up, seeing as they have so many needs across the boards. The one scenario where I can see this happening is if they are targeting a Runningback. The Rams might not draft one, but I'm confident Detroit and Tampa would jump at the chance to add a home-run hitter like Best to their backfield. If Cleveland is enamored enough with Best or (if San Diego chooses to look elsewhere) Ryan Matthews, I can see them trying to make a move up the board.

It's actually something I've been entertaining at the top of round one. C.J. Spiller's stock is steadily climbing and a team like Cleveland could really use him if Eric Berry or Joe Haden is unavailable. I'd go as far as to say he'd be near the top of Tampa Bay's board too. If Suh and McCoy are taken 1 &2 and Tampa doesn't want to put money into Berry or Pierre-Paul, Spiller could become a viable option in a developing offense.

Moreover, I can see a lot of teams looking to target a RB at the top of the second round. I'll bet there will be plenty of trade talk between teams like St. Louis, Detroit, Tampa and Cleveland with Arizona at pick 26 and Dallas at pick 27. If Ryan Matthews is available and someone wants to snatch him from San Diego the Cowboys and Cardinals are in for a hefty payday. Similarly, New Orleans and Indy could stand to benefit from teams wishing to leapfrog us to Best, assuming he is the last of the first tier RB's available. Personally, I'm not convinced that the difference between Matthews and Best is that substantial and would be just fine for us to sit and wait for him to drop to us in the knowledge that if he is taken, we can still turn our attention elsewhere to address other needs with equivalent value. With that said, if DeSpags want to trade up for Matthews, I'm all for it.

Very, very nice work man. Really helps visualize what could be out there driving our #33 trade value.

I wouldn't be dissappointed with any of the possibilities. Will vote later, need to kick around the possibilities for a bit.

Good stuff. (now to get someone to build an interactive 32-team mock draft app, we're set )

Another thing interesting to me, is how much our pick in the first will affect Colt McCoy's value in particular. If we go qb at 1, I think he's a mid-late 2nd rounder. If we go DT however, I see him being selected late in the 1st round.

Thats really interesting in the sense that there might be teams willing to trade up in order to grab McCoy before we do. Again, the Cleveland Browns come to mind. They're my biggest x-factor at the moment. There are so many directions in which they could choose to travel in a month's time.

I picked option 4, just because IMO we get a pretty good QB and a TE for years to come

I see Jerry Hughes TCU mentioned as a OLB. I think Daryl Washington TCU is a better OLB. At least a better cover LB and a better fit for the Rams.

                                by Bar-bq
This one will be my final one before draft day and I've increased it to three rounds in length. I like this one a lot for St. Louis as we land starters at QB, WR and DE in each round.

Not a great deal of changes from my 15/4 mock in the top ten to fifteen, but plenty thereafter that have direct implications on our Rams!

As always, if you're not too busy with your own, don't hesitate to tell me what you think!

                                ROUND ONE
                                1. St. Louis Rams- Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
The Rams don't hesitate upon finding their Franchise signal caller.

                                2. Detroit Lions- Ndamkong Suh, DT, Nebraska
This Draft's best player falls into the lap of the Lions, much the same way as Calvin Johnson did two years ago. Look for the Lions to move on up in 2010.

                                3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
The Bucs grab some help up front. Though he's not the best DT in this class, McCoy is not far from it.

                                4. Washington Redskins- Russel Okung, OT, Oklahoma St
The Redskins protect the investment they made in McNabb by selecting the best OT available.

                                5. Kansas City Chiefs- Brian Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Kansas City continues to overhaul its OL, bringing in the versatile Bulaga to keep defenders away from Matt Cassel.

                                6. Seattle Seahawks- CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
Surprise! The Hawks pull the trigger on Clemson's playmaker early. With the apparent depth at OT this year, it makes a lot of sense to grab Spiller early.

                                7. Cleveland Browns- Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
Best safety out in a number of years falls conveniently to a team who really needs him. Clausen will be strongly considered.

                                8. Oakland Raiders- Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
Logic has to prevail at some point. I'm betting that this is the year the Raiders actually try to start winning games.

                                9. Buffalo Bills- Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
I don't think the Bills can afford to pass on a Franchise QB. They'll look for a replacement for Jason Peters in round two.

                                10. Jacksonville Jaguars- Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
The Jaguars need DE help and whilst Morgan isn't as sexy a pick as Pierre-Paul, I believe he's the more consistent player.

                                11. Denver Broncos (f/CHI)- Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama
McLain looks like an ideal fit as a centrepiece for the Broncos defense. I thought hard about Bryant, but I highly doubt McDaniels replaces Marshall with his doppelganger.

                                12. Miami Dolphins- Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
Ferguson is 36 and suspended for the beginning of the season. Look for Williams to make a leap up draft boards as the best NT in this class.

                                13. San Francisco *****- Joe Haden, CB, Florida
The Niners could use some help in the secondary and like Berry before him, Haden slips to a team where his talents...
