  • Or O line, how do you feel about it?

    As of right now, with no other additions ( except maybe a 5th or 6th round depth pick),how do you feel about it? Im thinking it will be something like this
    LT= Smith
    LG= Bell
    C = Brown
    RG= Haley/Greco
    RT= Barron

    Barron, as much as it pains me to say it, is BY FAR our most durable player (on the line) and CAN block when hes not daydreaming of basketball. He usually shuts down the opposing teams best pass rusher when lined up against him, and has perfect size and good ability. Spags has to find a way to get into his head and help him with focus.

    Haley, is solid imo and should really push Greco for the RG starting spot. If Greco ends up starting then Haley would be great depth at Center and the guard spots.

    Brown, is a GREAT center and should be a good leader for us again this year.

    Bell, well some like him some dont, I think he solid at pass blocking but needs to buff up a little to improve his run blocking.

    Smith, I hope he can take the LT position this year and not look back. Last year was a tough one for all of us and I hope he can adjust his game to the NFL and be the pick we all hoped he would. I like his run blocking, he seems to be solid except for some footwork issues that I think he will get ironed out.

    Setterstrom,Trautline,and whoever else Im forgetting, Im hoping will give us decent depth although if we have to test that depth like we did last year we're in trouble.

    Id like to know what you guys think, Im pretty optimistic about this group providing most can stay healthy. I think we have some real talent on this line and hope that for the first time in MANY years our O line could be a strength for our team but, only time will tell.

    GO RAMS!!!

    I think they need to address OT depth no later than rd 3.

      I am happy with the left side.

      The right side, I have a little more concerns.

      I'm fine with Greco as the RG, but RT is the one question mark I have.

      I would take a guy like Jared Veldheer or Kyle Calloway or somebody similar to that mold in the draft around rounds 3-5. Some big guy that can be a mauler.

        Yeah Id like to get rid of Barron and add a mauler type at RT, but I was just thinking as it is right now. Hopefully we WILL add a RT somewhere in FA or draft, but other than that Ive got a pretty good feeling about this group, or maybe I shouldnt drink so much lol.

          Last year the left side of the line was very good and I hope Smith can develop. That's not a given or is it going to be easy but at this point, you sort of have to expect and plan on him being solid over there. Barron was very good last year (as soon as the ball snaps he's always been pretty darn good). To me the serious problem has been and still is RG. Goldberg played well there last year in his limited time. We'll see, I'm guessing the job will open to whoever plays the best in camp. Don't rule out Allen. He played pretty poorly when he came in last year but he had a massive jump up from his poor college talent. Just like with rookie QBs, you get guys like that in the game and see what an offseason does. Last year he was listed as the best first punch OG prospect but he was unknown coming from a small college.

            If we find a after the 3rd OT in the draft that we think can start right away at RT then we need to take him. Otherwise I think we have a solid line this year.

              Believe you're looking for Fraley there, friend. The o-line looks pretty decent. I'd rank it ahead of several other teams' efforts even division rival Seattle. We do need to keep addressing depth, as whether we have a great line or not--injuries happen. Especially to this team. A mid-draft pick should be dedicated to OT because I don't think anyone expects Barron to sign a long term deal after the '10 season.

                Best case I think this could be a mid tier line. Say 15th to 20th in the NFL. If bad things continue to happen, well, is it unethical to take out a life insurance policy on each of our QBs?

                  Offensive Linemen Next Year
                  by Dr. Defense
                  So with yesterdays events (Richie leaving town, Bell to IR) coupled with our tackle issues, I think we aren't in that great of a position going into this draft anymore. I think we are in a lot of trouble right now. As it stands, the only real solidified position on this line is Center. Here is who we have right now from linemen other then Jason Brown. Alex Barron, Adam Goldberg, Mark Setterstrom, John Greco, Jason Bell, Ryan McKee, Eric Young, Phil Trautwein, Rodger Allen III, Jason Smith.

                  That doesn't look like a good list to me. I have never heard of McKee, Young, Trautwein, Allen III. We don't know what's going on with Smith. He can't get over this concussion and their are reports saying that the Rams are going to put him on IR. Barron is in the last year of his contract, which should excite us. But with all the holes on this team, we might have to keep him. I could see us franchising him for a year to buy some time. Then you have Goldberg who is a journeyman of sorts and doesn't really do one position great, but does everything well. I think he is more of a backup kind of guy. We haven't really seen a lot from Greco. Bell had been to small, and now he lands himself on IR. Hasn't lived up to his contract. Finally we have Mark Setterstrom, who plays well above expectations when he is healthy, but has an injury issue.

                  The way I see it, their is a good chance we might see a lot of new faces on this line next year. Really wouldn't suprise me if Round 1 we went Suh, Round 2 we went Qb, Round 3 we went with a nice big offensive guard, some names to throw out Mike Johnson, Brandon Carter, John Jerry.

                  We all know that Spags is a firm believer in winning the wars in the trenches, so why not get some big boys to win those fights. Hopefully with we can Richie Icognito Version 2.0. Except 2.0 has the stupidity chip removed.

                  Barron-Bell-Brown-Cogs-Smith

                  Does that sound like what it will be next year?

                  Can Grecco beat out Incognito?

                  Where is Schuening's future with this team? (I really like him)

                  Do you think Barron will be gone next year, and would Grecco be able to play RT? (I want him to stay, but I don't know if the Front Office does)

                  With what five starters would you like to see the Rams open the season? Many people want to see a franchise left tackle taken in this month's draft, in order to replace Orlando Pace and because they feel that Alex Barron simply isn't good enough. However, there are plenty of people who want us to draft Aaron Curry in the first round- does that mean that we grab the best remaining OT in round two or do we trade back into round one to select someone who may slip a bit, like Michael Oher or Andre Smith?

                  I'm going to assume that we can't negotiate any trades and that we have to pick where we currently are in the draft.

                  That being the case, I'd go for Curry in the first round and one of Laurinaitis, Beckwith or Brinkley in round two. I really think that our linebackers are the weakest part of our team, Will Witherspoon excepted, and we have a chance to make our LB ranks the best in the league for many years to come in this draft.

                  Add to that the fact that both Monroe (injury record) and Jason Smith (weak legs and iffy technique) have the kind of doubts about them that make you wonder if they're real blue chip tackle prospects and I'd go against selecting our franchise tackle of the future this year. Barron has played well enough when he has replaced Big O in the past and the 2010 draft will have players like Russell Okung, Trent Williams, Ciron Black and (if he comes out a year early) Bryan Bulaga as viable LT options.

                  I'd like to see us give Roy Schuening and John Greco their chance; both were considered good value in last year's draft and have had a year of experience in the squad. Greco played well when he came on, while Schuening didn't feature but was plagued by niggling injuries. All of the draft sites said that Schuening was a real rough, tough, guard- the type of player the new regime is apparently very keen on developing. We are a young team building for the future, so let's give these guys a go.

                  Jacob Bell can stay at left guard: he simply isn't big enough to play tackle and he should do much better with Jason Brown to his right than he did with the hardworking but hapless Nick Leckey at centre.

                  We still need a back-up centre (we should be able to get one in round three or even later, if necessary) and I'd like to see Richie Incognito traded (the fact that we can't find anyone interested in him surely speaks volumes- who wants a player who denigrates the fans, gives away loads of penalties and has a discipline problem.... apart from various Clan Ram members, that is?) and Mark Setterstrom back in the fold after his injury.

                  When all's said and done, I'd like to see us enter the 2009 season with this OL in place:

                  LT: Barron
                  LG: Bell
                  C: Brown
                  RG: Schuening
                  RT: Greco

                  We'd then have Goldberg and Setterstrom as experienced back-ups and we could either draft a back-up centre and guard in the later rounds or acquire...

                  Just thinking of a possitive thing we can get from the game.

                  We gave up no sacks and Jon Grecco actually got to play this week. Pace and Bell played well and Barron was up to his usual penalty ways. I've been calling for Grecco to start all year and with Cogs banged up I expect him to continue to impress. Romberg was solid and could be a good backup. If we draft a guy like Oher or smith who could immedeatly replace barron at RT our line isn't all that bad if we add a center.

                  by 39thebeast
                  IMO he is a great fit for this new look O-Line and would be better at RT than Bell who could be a versatile backup. Only Jeff Otah paved the way for more yards off tackle than Barnes. He did give up 7.5 sacks, but he is a much better fit on the right side. He is a big mauler that fits the new look O-line. Barron and Barnes are young bookends that compliment each other.

                  LT- Barron 320 pounds
                  LG- Grecco 325 pounds
                  C- Brown 325 pounds
                  RG- Cogs 330 pounds
                  RT- Barnes 325 pounds

                  That is big bad line and you could also add Kerney. IMO S-Jax would have a great year behind those big boys.
