  • How important is the WLB position?

We dont have a starter WLB yet no one really cares about it. A good WLB would help us when we blitz. That would make Spags job alot easier comming up with blitzing schemes.

Im seeing alot of people make mocks with drafting Edds in the 4th or 5th round and just making him starter.

Theres a reason he is a mid rounder and not a highly scouted player.

Today Chris Gocong went to the Browns along with Sheldon Brown. Why didn't we deal for Gocong? He is better than Edds.

Also do you think we should try to do a better job a WLB than a mid round rookie?

Gocong played SLB in Philly and he is a 260 lb converted DE. I'm guessing thats why we didn't make a deal for him to be our new WLB.

      (a) Didn't we sign Na'il Diggs? Or are they still just in talks?

      (b) A weakside linebacker will often be covering a short zone, spying the quarterback, or picking up any runningbacks coming out of the backfield. Sure, it's important to have somebody doing those things, but it means that there are probably going to be some times where he just seems to disappear during games. Go through the big names at linebacker in the league, and you'll be hard-pressed to find any big name impact players who start on the weakside. That is to say that compared to our needs at quarterback, wide receiver, defensive tackle, and defensive end, I do consider weakside linebacker a relatively low priority.

Every position is important in some sense, but the two OLB positions in a 4-3 are, in my opinion, two of the least important positions on the field.

I like Vobora and JL, if we get Diggs then we have our starters imo.

Vobora is a solid back-up, if the right guy comes to us at the draft in say the 4th round, snatch him up. Vobora can't be a starter next year.

Refreshingly different topic & a great point, BW.

Both OLBs are points of weakness, imo. In the FLAGS system(Spags + Flajole = FLAGS) I think those positions are very difficult. Those guys are asked to do a lot of different things & none of last year's bunch were consistently good at any of them, especially the WLB playing in space. And not just coverage in the flat/seams or blitzing; how often did a Rams LB pull down a runner from the backside? More often than not, if Lau or Long didn't get it done, it had to wait for a DB 5-10 yds later.

I guess that's why Diggs, being familiar with his former LB coach Flajole's way of doing things, is being courted by the Rams but a draft upgrade in physical talent/ improvement in play reads would really help.

Not enough of a draftnik to name names but I wouldn't be at all surprised or unhappy to see a LB taken in the second or third round. And if The Rams were going to do a trade with The Skins, both London and Rocky McIntosh would be at or near the top of my wish list of players to be included. I doubt that even Haslett would be crazy enough to give them up but a Ram fan can dream...

In short, I don't think you'll see the Urlacher-type impact of Lau until he has his Lance Briggs.I also think it makes the DTs look weaker than they are; the MLB and safety are always getting sucked out of position.

Re: How important is the WLB position?

I dont think i explained it correctly.

Back with the Giants Spags used plenty of blitzing schemes where the OLBs blitz and he droped a DL in a zone. And sometimes he made it look like both OLBs were blitzing then they got back into a zone. Spags needs guys that know what they are doing and thay can effectively blitz and get pressure.

Diggs is a solid back-up but i dont think he is worthy to be a starter.

Also David Vabora is a solid starter he can make tackles be he needs to learn how to shed blocks more effectively another year with spags and fajole (flags as Azul calls it lol) and maybe he can turn into a quality starter.

I think we would see more sacks from Long if we get that WLB to play behind him when he plays LE (The WLB does line up behind the LE right?)

What i mean to say is how important is a WLB to Spags defensive scheme?

It seems we have that dreamer mentality where we think we'll be able to acquire pro bowlers at every position.. Diggs was a solid starter for CArolina, why can't he be that for us? He's a guy that will have to come in an earn his spot like everyone else. The position should be addressed in the draft but don't be pressed into getting a guy unless you like him for his potential and his value at the pick.

exactly, Diggs would be perfect for at the least depth If not starting at WLB and will be a light year ahead of Paris Lenon at performance at the position.. at Carolina he played well...
Think of our superbowl teams of ten years ago... not everyone was a pro bowler but played their position so the others could do their job. Diggs might not be a pro bowler but he does his job...

p.s. the deal should be done the beginning of this coming week

You guys are talking like Diggs is the solution. He is merely a 1 year starter until we can find someone more capable of having an impact.

We dont need a pro bowler we need a quality starter. And i hope you guys dont think Diggs is a quality starter.

He will get some tackles but he will miss some. He cant be trusted on to be healthy. I don't see him as a huge improvement over Chris Chamberlain at this point.

Does anyone have any insight into what the Rams are planning to do about their linebacker situation? They barely have enough linebackers on the current roster to field a starting lineup, not to mention that except for JL they are not starter material, or even very good backups. Are they planning on looking at any FAs later on? Or draft a couple of OLBs in the 3-5 round range? It doesn't seem like there will be any value at the top of round 2, because I believe Weatherspoon and Graham will be long gone, and Sergio Kindle seems more of a 3-4 guy...I dunno, does anybody have any thoughts into what the gameplan might be? (besides wait till next year?)

I keep seeing in threads such how peopel are saying don't draft a lb because we have no place to put him. And with Chris draft we are set at the linebacker position. I ever see people pushing for us to draft someone in the secondary? Are you kidding me? I know that our secondary isn't the greatest thing ever, but still we have much bigger problems with our run defense. I know that the addition of men for the defensive line would make it better, but by how much? You can have the biggest faster line in the game but if the running back breaks out and your linebackers can't stop them it's going to be a long day jack.

How much longer do you think we can last without getting a true MLB. Don't get me wrong I think that Witherspoon did a great job at the position last year. He just isn't big enough. So how much longer can we afford to keep our linebacking core the way that it is?

Na'il Diggs and LB core, can someone explain...?
                                by raybp
We just signed Na'il Diggs a day ago to help out at linebacker (possibly either side Strong or Weak). He's going to be 32 in a couple of months and has already played 10 seasons, though not all of last year due to injury.

Can anyone explain how this is an upgrade? Why not have kept Will Witherspoon (another former Panther acquired through free agency). We certainly lost a difference maker on defense without acquiring a difference maker when he went to Philly. Oh yeah and he's 3 years younger than Na'il (plus about 40 more tackles a year).

Or for you real fans how about when we let go Pisa Tinoisamoa before last season, you remember the guy that had led our defense in tackles the two years prior to 2009??? We got nothing as a result of his release.

It just seems to me a team that has so much rebuilding to do in key roles, can't afford to release and trade away the few pieces that are working and DO HAVE talent to go with something left in the tank. It's hard to argue that salaries are really the issue when these guys were actually earning their checks.

Please don't take my word for it, while Pisa and Will were not pro-bowl caliber compare their stats to Na'il and tell me which you think could help this team as a veteran leader in the long haul?

Unless someone can sit back and enlighten me that these guys wouldn't work in Spags system or were poison in the locker room I cannot imagine that their release was a move in the positive direction for a defense that has ranked near the bottom of the league for most of this decade.

Hard to 'Believe' in the rebuilding process when the team seems to be sliding further and further downhill.

"Tweener" No Longer A Criticism (Gimme One Of Those!)
                                by AvengerRam_old
In years past, players who weighed between 250-275 lbs and projected as either DEs or OLBs were dubbed "tweeners," a negative term indicating that the player might be too small to be a down lineman and too big to be a LB.

Well, now, it seems that "tweeners" are all the rage.

Dwight Freeney, Terrell Suggs, DeMarcus Ware and Shawne Merriman all wore this label coming out of college. Now, they are among the top young sack artists and most disruptive defenders in the league.

I think the Rams could use a guy like this (arguably, Leonard Little used to be one, though he seems to have lost a step).

So, who are the top tweeners in this year's draft? (Kiwanuka, Dumervil) Maybe Nick has the answer.

We'll obviously know more after the combine comes and goes, but as of now this looks like a virtual lock -- barring an 'elite' prospect dropping into our laps. There is also the threat that a team could trade up ahead of us (Detroit looks like a logical target), but since I won't be projecting trades the Rams get an immense blend of both need and value at #14. I wasn't high on Jones prior to the season because he had always been plagued by drops and inconsistency, however, he was able to put it altogether this season while playing through injury. He is physically ready to play from day one and should not be a liability in run blocking like most rookies would.
                                Secondary Options: DE, DT, OLB

(2-47) Ryan Williams, RB, Virginia Tech
The Rams have repeatedly come up short in the past with the goal of finding a formidible back up for Steven Jackson. It is becoming much more pertinent to find his compliment especially with Jackson approaching twenty-eight years old. Had Williams not gone through an injury-plagued season, we would not even be in a position to draft him this late. A projected first round pick coming into 2010, he has excellent vision and suddeness with his cuts, has great balance and is an underrated receiver out of the backfield (his low reception total is misleading). Turning only twenty-one in February, he can be groomed as our future lead back and showed the ability to carry the load in his freshman season. In the case he is gone by our pick, an alternative would be Shane Vereen from Cal who could possibly be had in the third round. Either way, I see RB getting addressed in the second or third.
                                Secondary Options: DE, DT, OLB

                                (3-79) Jurrell Casey, DT, USC
Fred Robbins was a god send last season and might've been one of the most underappreciated players on the team especially after losing Clifton Ryan. The Rams have a bunch of ordinary players but no stand outs. Darell Scott has yet to flash anything that shows he can be counted on going forward and although both Jermelle Cudjo and Gary Gibson did a formidable job, there is still a need for influx of talent and depth at the position. Casey might not get this far but if he does I believe the Rams have a talent on their hands. One of the lone brightspots on the USC defense last year, Casey shows the ability to uphold the point of attack and shed blocks when getting into the backfield. He struggles with awareness and dissecting plays at times but that can easily be coached from a great defensive mind like Spagnuolo.
                                Secondary Options: DE, OLB, CB

(4-TBD) K.J. Wright, OLB, Mississippi State
After Na'il Diggs (a stop gap, at best) went down with injury, our LB corps really suffered. Vobora and Chamberlain did their best to hold down SLB and it was a constant turnstile all season between Grant and Kehl at WLB. Besides Laurinaitis, there is far from an entrenched starter...
