I think that one of the reasons the Rams really need to look at the RB position early (Round 2 or 3) is that bolstering the running game will make the transition of a new QB much easier.
There is only one RB (C.J. Spiller) who is a lock for the first round, and another (Ryan Matthews) is very likely to be gone in the first 32 picks. After that, there is a good list of candidates for the job, including Jahvid Best, Jonathan Dwyer, Montario Hardesty, Joe McKnight, Toby Gerhart and Ben Tate. Dexter McCluster is also an option, but he would likely not be able to carry the load of the other backs listed, given his diminutive size.
Taking a RB early would also be consistent with the model for success that the Giants used when Spagnuolo was the DC, and that Atlanta used when Devaney was in their front office. I think both believe in a "run sets up the pass" philosophy. If that method works, it would certainly be easier to keep Bradford (or some other young QB) upright for 20-25 passing plays per game, rather than 30-35.
I'd be surprised if a RB is not among the Rams Friday picks.
