  • Question for Suh and Bradford fans alike

What if the Rams draft Bradford, and then at the end of the first day McCoy (or somehow Clausen) winds up as still being available?

What would your reaction be, and what do you think the overall reaction would be? Terrible mistake and poor draft projection, or good draft choice still because of inability to predict draft? Or of course bad choice because it should have been Suh all along no matter what.

    What do you think?

I doubt I'd have a reaction. I see nothing that suggests Colt is a better option than Bradford, who cares if we take Bradford and Colt is still there at pick #33? If we are taking a QB we should take the best one...not the best bargain basement one so we can also draft yet another first round defensive linemen.

I'm sure some would argue that the Rams made a mistake, but I think that's unfair. You can't predict with complete accuracy so, in my opinion, you can't second guess.

Besides, second guessers are often wrong. Last year, some people wanted the Rams to take Aaron Curry and wait to take an OT in Round 2. If the Rams had done so, they could have ended up with Curry and Eben Britton, Phil Loadholt or Sebastian Vollmer. The day after the draft, some fans may have argued that this was the best outcome but, in the end, I expect that J.Smith/J.Laurinaitis will prove to have been the better way to go.

It's like that show, Deal or No Deal. You've got a briefcase, and the banker offers you $700,000. Do you take the offer or open the potential $1 Mil briefcase? In this situation, you take the $700k offer (Bradford) only to find out that you had the $1Mil briefcase (Suh/McCoy) all along.

Some might be a little bummed that you could have had an extra $300k, but bottomline........you walked in with bupkis and walked out with $700k. Not exactly a bad deal.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

That's an excellent an example, and I would be happy to walk away with Bradford myself, but I imagine decently happy with Suh/McCoy. I love Suh, but I am not high on McCoy myself, I see him in the Trent Dilfer mold (What do you know, exactly who he works out with) in the sense that he won't hurt your team, but he won't be winning games for you either. All-in-all not a bad deal either way.

Re: Question for Suh and Bradford fans alike

I want the guy that can come in and lead us to victory and im sick and tired of second hand. Bradford is the guy, so lets just shut up and make the plunge. If we picked Bradford and Mccoy was still there id be like, so?

I don't want Mccoy, I want Bradford, if there was some way we could get Suh as well so be it, but since its not going to happen if we pick Bradford, I guarantee i wont lose any sleep over it. I project Suh as being solid in the Nfl at his position.

A Suh/Clausen deal is what i couldnt pass up. If Clausen could somehow fall then that would make me pass on Bradford. But since that's not likely to happen then its Bradford.

Unless he gets injured (which i think is just as likely as anyone else) I don't see this kid failing with the current personel. He has the intelligence, determination, love for the game, and ability to be as good as he wants to. Our supporting cast will just have to step it up to continue to complement him.

I joke about plastic Sam, but he is FAR and AWAY imo the best QB this year and probably last year as well. Sanchez didnt impress me at all, and Stafford was the exact opposite of Bradford more arm strength less accuracy.
But IMO I have not seen Bradfords accuracy to hit guys in stride since #13 was around, if he can learn the mental part of the game I really believe we might have something special in Bradford.
Colt is solid but hes not on Bradfords level. Same could be said for "Bitter Beer Face".

We need a QB, a leader, a strong character to build around, and I hope we (the FO) recognize that being able to hit a guy 15-25 yards downfield in perfect stride and on the numbers just doesnt come around every year. We should NOT pass on Bradford this year imo. I dont care how good of tacklers Suh and Mccoy are.

I wouldn't really care. Even if McCoy was available in the second round, I wouldn't give it a second though because if Bradford is who we wanted, then we did our job.

I would rather get a top tier QB and a second tier DT then a top tier DT and a second tier QB.

No one will know if the Rams made a mistake for another 3-4 years, but I don't agree that you can't second guess the decision based on not being able to predict with complete accuracy.

Sure, there are people who don't think Colt McCoy makes it out of the first round. But there are also plenty of people who think he does. It's not as if we're talking about a Top 10 prospect slipping to the second round. We're talking about a guy that most view as a second round prospect being available in the second round. I can't guarantee he'll be there, but I don't think it's incredibly unlikely and I won't be shocked at all if he is.

I'd point out that last year, I was against the Curry/OT argument for the reason you pointed out - I wasn't confident that there would be an offensive tackle in round two that would make it worth it. Many people pointed to William Beatty possibly being there in round two; I didn't think he would be. Turned out he was.

That doesn't mean the Rams aren't better off now, or wouldn't be better off by just taking Bradford. We have no means of knowing until they get on the field and play for a couple of years. But I don't agree with this impossible-to-meet standard of having to guarantee or predict something with complete accuracy in order to reduce the risk enough to consider or even support it.

Ultimately, if McCoy falls to the second round, the people who want Bradford won't care because they'll have gotten their guy already, and the people who wanted Suh would confirm that the Rams could have gotten a QB in the second round.

Of course we won't know for a long time which route would have been better; we may never know since both Suh and McCoy would go to different teams and different situations. So I don't think there's any merit to immediately calling it a bad choice or terrible decision, but it will be interesting to see how those careers progress, knowing what could have been... if it falls that way.

and then the year after that someone will be the next "locker" every year people say there are much better players the next, and when that year comes around the media/analysts start picking apart each players game.

Good post. You're the voice of reason around here.
I think there is a better than 50/50 chance that McCoy will be there at #33.
It'll take 3 -4 years to know if a mistake was made unless one of the players in question sustains a career ending injury early on. Let's hope not.

Re: Question for Suh and Bradford fans alike

Its impossible to determine whether a mistake was made. Different circumstances produce different outcomes. Who Bradford or Suh gets drafted by or hell, what breakfast they eat on one particular morning could have huge implications on what happens to them in their lives and careers like everyone else. You'll never what would will happen so you just have to move on and live with your decision. There is no such thing as a future really, the "future" is a concept created by man and is simply a product of the present, which is a product of the past. If Bradford breaks his arm waving at someone and it subsequently ruins his career then the Rams are idiots because they couldn't predict the future.

If Suh's knees come out of the blue to haunt him and he gets rolled up on in the trenches then the Rams are idiots because they should have taken a QB. All you can do is make the choice considering the worst and best possible scenarios and do everything you can to ensure your pick succeeds. There is no such thing as a sure bust, and bust is only created by unforeseen circumstances or lack of effort or assitance by the team and by the player. Every bust out there could have became a hit if certain things came together. Jamarcus Russell could come out at any moment and live up to his potential and be erased off of bust boards. A bust is the player who fails to excel because of lakc of supporting cast, lack of ability, and/or lack of effort.

Agreed. It doesn't change anything. We're looking for a quarterback who can lead the team for the next decade or so. If we think Bradford is the best man for the job, then we should take him. If we think Colt is, then we should do whatever it takes to get him.

Quarterback is kind of an all or nothing position. If you draft a corner hoping he'll be a no. 1 and he isn't up to the job, maybe you make him your no. 2, shift him to safety, or use him in the nickel package. If you draft a guy to be your left tackle and he doesn't live up to expectations, you could move him to the right or play him at guard. If you draft a quarterback and he doesn't live up to expectations, he just warms the bench.
