  • Nugget from Rob Rang on the Rams

In a new article at CBS Sports, NFL Draft Scout senior analyst Rob Rang predicts five things that few others are willing to hang their hat on leading into the NFL Draft. His #5 prediction is about the Rams, with an interesting nugget...

    5. St. Louis trades out of the first pick

I reported that the Browns were having internal discussions about offering a package of picks to the Rams for the rights to the No. 1 selection two days before Cleveland general manager Tom Heckert publicly acknowledged the talks. While trading out of the top pick is rarely feasible, the 2010 draft is unique in that the Browns appear to be enamored with Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford and have the ammunition (five picks in the top 100) to make St. Louis a tempting offer.

Most important, sources tell me the Rams are not significantly more sold on Bradford than some of the other quarterbacks in this draft, namely Texas' Colt McCoy. If the Rams believe they can get McCoy with the first pick of the second round -- the 33rd pick overall -- don't be surprised if they trade out of No. 1, collect their extra picks and take advantage of this year's deep talent level to reshape their roster.

Tomorrow's pick is either going to be very predictable or very interesting, people!

I'd prefer to snag Suh and then get McCoy in that case (And not trade down), as I don't like who is probably available at 7 for us, except Clausen, but no sense in taking him then McCoy.

A 1st in next year's draft might change my mind tho...

I'm actually a fan of trading down to #7 with the intention of drafting Clausen. I'd rather have Bradford than Clausen, but I'll take Clausen + 3rd round this year + 1st next year (or whatever they offer provided it's reasonable) over Bradford. The only problem is that there's no guarantee that he'll be there at #7, and otherwise the board doesn't match up with our needs at all IMO.

It will be exciting though, that's for sure!

i agree 100%, if we like McCoy more than Bradford or just as much then i would much rather draft Suh then McCoy. However if we traded to 7 i would want us to go after Claussen at that pick.

good time to be a rams fan, although the anticipation is killing me at this point.

Suh first and C.McCoy in the second has been my preference since we earned the first pick, but I certainly can be swayed with multiple draft picks.

If Cleveland wants Bradford bad enough to give us number 7, their 2nd rounder and a number 1 next year, I'd certainly have to strongly consider that.

IMHO, drafting Suh and rolling the dice on whatever QB might be left later is a recipe for disaster. If the Rams really wanted Suh, they would have made some sort of substantial move in the FA market for a QB.

If we really do think they're that close, we should look at a variety of options. The one major flaw in the plan is that by passing on Bradford, we'd basically be broadcasting to the league that we were going to try to land Colt. It'd be daring anyone to trade ahead of us, which would almost force us to trade up to preempt such a move. I think McCoy is going to get a shot to start somewhere in the league, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk not getting him and entering the 2010 season with no real QB other than Feeley.

only reason this draft is so hush hush is that its got to boost ratings...with this new format and the situation...the network is just tellin the rams to be hush to boost tv ratings...

Yeah...I strongly doubt we'd listen to an organization that has shown minimal inclination to cut breaks for us in the past.

It doesnt make sense for the rams to trade with browns now. It's smarter to wait and see if Clausen will really be there at #7 come draft day. Then you might see Bradford traded to Cleveland in order to pick up Clausen and some picks.
