  • Possible reason for not taking Austin Lane... his attitude?

I know a lot of fans wanted Lane, especially when he was there in later rounds. But i read this quote from him after he was drafted, and im kind of glad that we didnt get him:

"My first goal is to hurt the quarterback. I don't want to just sack the quarterback. I want to hurt somebody. I want to cause pain."

He sounds like another head case like Incognito. Id rather a player concentrate more on making the play rather than trying to hurt a guy.

Jason Smith said he wanted to physically assault his opponents when he was being interviewed at the combine, and the Rams took him second overall.

I wouldn't read too much into that statement, unless his film actually confirms he's trying to intentionally hurt someone on the field.

It's hard to tell what he means without context. He said he wants to 'hurt' the QB, not injure him. Whether they admit it or not, that's probably near universal among DEs. Bulger didn't develop 'battered QB' syndrome because he was scared of losing 8 yards to a sack, he developed it because getting driven into the ground by your opponent hurts. A lot. That's part of the game plan on defense, to get inside the QB's head. Maybe that's all he was saying?

I agree with you it's kind of an iffy thing to say, but I could see it going either way.

Sounds like the guy plays with intensity. Doesn't mean he necessarily wants to injure or maim a QB, he just wants to cause pain.

Frankly, I wish all our DEs had that mentality.

No reason not to take him. I think we just didn't want the guy. Maybe he is just another name that got overrated by the media. Fans tend to like the big name guys because they are more familiar with them when in a lot of cases, the guys not a good fit, health issues, or just plain isn't that good.
