  • Av's Ridiculously Early 2011 Rams First Round Pick Projection

I know... its WAY too early to be talking about this, but...

Here is my pick for the Rams in Round 1 of the 2011 NFL Draft:

    Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina

Carter is 6'3 and currently 225-230, but has the frame to bulk up. I'm betting that by the time he's drafted he'll be playing in the 240-245 range. He hasn't been timed, but I'd guess he's a 4.60 or better in the 40. I you watch UNC play, he's the guy who is always around the ball, and he hits like a truck.

In additional to being a great prospect for the WLB spot on the Rams defense, I like Carter because he's probably a guy who will be taken in the middle of the first round. In other words, he'll probably go to a team that wins 6-9 games.

Okay... that will be my last 2011 "mock draft" type post until at least November.

I am not sure at this point on a first round pick. But I would like to get a big physical reciever like A.J Green from Georgia or Julio Jones from Alabama. Both are 6.4 recievers and very fast.

I believe a gem in the 2011 draft is going to be Vincent Brown. The wide reciever from San Diego State University. He never has a good qb to throw to him. And from 2007-2009 he has averaged over 10.0 yards a catch. In 2007 he had 11.3 average and in 2008 he had 10.0 and in 2009 he had 17.3. SDSU really doesn't get a lot of respect but does produce good players. I go to almost ever SDSU home game and this guy Vincent Brown is always making plays. He is Also a four pillar guy Spags likes. During the 2007 fires in San Diego, Vincent Brown was at Qualcomm Stadium helping out all the people. Givin them food and giving up clothes. I think he will be a steal in the 2011 draft.

I'm keeping an eye on Adrian Clayborn the DE from Iowa. This guy looks like the real deal.

Last year I wasn't so forward thinking.

If we are picking in the top 15 next year, I hope we target one of the four major WRs.

Mark Ingram would be a great SJax replacement at some point , either 2011 or 2012

                      lol, way too early...

But I like AJ Green if he puts on some more weight. But who knows if we'll need him next year.

I like Julio Jones right now. He's a man's man, and the perfect compliment to the type of receivers (see: tiny, frail) we have on the roster presently.

Let me give you four names. The Rams are getting one if we don't get dramatic improvement from 1 of our own guys

                          AJ Green, WR, Georgia
                          Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
                          Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
                          Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh

Re: Av's Ridiculously Early 2011 Rams First Round Pick Projection

The 2011 draft will be interesting say the least.

                            Depending on rookie salary cap.

Unfortunately the Rams will have the first pick again. I don't see rams beating lions this year. I'm hoping for at least a three win season.

If there is a rookie salary cap do you take a chance on another QB in round one. To make sure you get your franchise QB or do you trade down for more picks for teams wanting there future franchise QB. Good Questions in my book.
                            QB Jake Locker
                            QB Ryan Mallet
                            QB Andrew Luck

I hope these problems were solved in the 2010 draft! DE , WR , OLB & OT.

I'm interested in these players in the 2011 draft!
                            1. WR A.J. Green Georgia
                            2. WR Julio Jones Alabama
                            3. DE Greg Romeus Pitt
                            4. DE Adrian Clayborn Iowa
                            5. RB Mark Ingram Alabama
                            Looking for Jackson replacement.

Av's 2011 NFL Draft Watch List (Version 1.0)
                                by AvengerRam_old
I'm not as ambitious as Nick, so I'm not going to attempt a mock draft quite yet. Instead, this is my current list of players I have my eye on as possible Rams targets.

NOTE: Not all of these players are necessarily prospective first round targets. Rather, these are players I could see as possibilities in the first three rounds. Some of these players are Juniors who I could envision declaring for the draft.

                                (Listed Alphabetically):

                                Allen Bailey, DE, Miami (FL)
                                Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina
                                John Clay, RB, Wisconsin
                                Noel Devine, RB, West Virginia
                                A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
                                Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami (FL)
                                Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State
                                Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

                                This list will surely grow...

Av's 2011 Draft "Most Likely" List
                                by AvengerRam_old
Here are some "most likely" awards I see...

Most Likely to Succeed: Patrick Peterson, DB, LSU
Peterson is so talented, and so physically gifted, I have a hard time seeing him fail in the NFL. The only question will be whether he is best suited to be a CB or a FS. I suspect he'll start his career at CB, and move on to FS later.

Most Likely Bust: Jake Locker, QB, Washington
For me, it was a toss-up between Locker and Ryan Mallett. I went with Locker only because I think he'll be taken much earlier in the draft. Both players are "all physical talent/potential, little actual performance on the field" prospects. QBs these days don't have the luxury of time to learn the game, so expect Locker to be thrown to wolves early.

Most Likely to Succeed or Fail Based Upon System: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
In a 3-4, where he'll be asked to play the run and rush inside of a speed OLB, he can be a very productive player. In a 4-3, I think he'd be the second coming of Adam Carriker.

Most Likely to Be Drafted Too High: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA
I think he has Round 1 publicity and Round 3-4 talent.

Most Likely to Be Drafted Lower Than He Should Be: Ras-I Dowling, DB, Virginia
I've seen many mocks in which he's lasted until Round 3. If he stays healthy, he's a late-first/early-second round talent.

Most Likely to Earn the Label "Biggest Sleeper": Martin Parker, DT, Richmond
He was one of the stars of the East/West Shrine Game, proving he can play with the big boys.

Most Likely Trade Involving the Rams: Washington's First Pick (#10) for the Rams' First (#14) and Third Round Picks
The Redskins need more picks, having traded several away, and the Rams may desire Julio Jones enough to give up a third round pick. If Jones pans out, nobody will argue with this in the long run.

                                and finally...

Most Likely Player To Elicit An "Oh $#!%" Reaction When Selected: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
Many will love him as the face of a franchise, others will see not be happy campers.

                                Av's 7-Round Rams Mock Draft (Version 2.0)
                                by AvengerRam_old
With the Combine winding down, its time for an update:

Round 1: Cameron Jordan, DE, California
(Previous pick: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama)
Jones is still the guy I want, but I think there is now a better than 50% chance he'll be gone before the Rams make their selection. Jordan will be a good addition for the Rams. He really showed his ability at the Senior Bowl, and backed that up with a strong Combine showing (4.78 40 at 287 lbs.).

Round 2: Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland
(Previous Pick: Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma)
After missing out on Jones and A.J. Green at pick #14, the Rams will need to turn to the WR corps in Round 2. The guy I'd love to see here (UM alum bias) is Leonard Hankerson. Unfortunately, I think he'll be gone before the Rams make their pick. Smith will be a fine consolation prize, though. He has the size (6'1, 205) and speed (4.43) to be a top end WR.

Round 3: Jordan Todman, RB, UConn
(Previous Pick: Dontay Moch, OLB, Nevada)
I think Todman is exactly what the Rams need. He can be a home-run hitter type (4.40), but also has demonstrated the ability to carry a big load if needed. With a number of RBs having good Combine workouts, there's a good chance Todman will be there when the Rams make their third pick.

Round 4: John Moffitt, OG, Wisconsin
(Previous Pick: Dion Lewis, RB, Pittsburgh)
I had Moffitt as the Rams' fifth round pick in my initial mock. After a strong Senior Bowl week, I think the Rams may need to grab him in Round 4. I see him as a potential Day 1 starter.

Round 5: Doug Hogue, OLB, Syracuse
(Previous Pick: John Moffitt, OG, Wisconsin)
Part of me hates to leave the LB spot for this late in the draft, but you simply can't fill all the needs with high draft choices. Hogue is a WLB only. He had a productive college career and has good speed, something the Rams need at the OLB spot.

Round 6: Jermale Hines, S, Ohio State
                                (Previous Pick: same)
Still like Hines at this spot. Has the size to be a real thumper at SS. Hopefully the Rams won't also have to fill the FS spot.

Round 7: Charles Clay, TE/FB, Tulsa
(Previous Pick: Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama)
Let me start off by saying that I'm not sure Clay will be available at the end of the draft. If he is, though, I like his potential as a FB/TE hybrid. He is a great receiver out of the backfield, and could be put to very good use by Josh McDaniels

Av's Rams' Mock Draft (Version 1.0)
                                by AvengerRam_old
This will be the first of several projections.

A few ground rules. First, I'm not going to project any FA signings. Too many variables there. Suffice to say, this draft could be altered by FA, assuming it takes place before the draft (depends on labor issue).

Second, these are projections based upon who I think could be available when the Rams make their selections.

So, with that said, here's my first stab:

Round 1: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
If he's there at pick #14, I'd say he'd be a no-brainer selection. He'd fill the biggest need while also fitting into a BPA philosophy.

Round 2: Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma
Draftniks will critique his size (6'3, 267) and question whether he's an every down player. Here's what I see. I see a guy who averaged nearly 70 tackles, 9+ sacks and 17+ tackles for loss in the last three years.

Round 3: Dontay Moch, OLB, Nevada
If reports of his 40 time are accurate (I've read that he can run a 4.25-4.30 at 245 lbs) he has a built in nickname ("Moch Speed"). This guy could be a terror in blitz packages.

Round 4: Dion Lewis, RB, Pittsburgh
Lewis is a guy I think could be a good value at this part of the draft. He does not have the size of Steven Jackson, but he can be a workhorse if the need arises.

Round 5: John Moffitt, OG, Wisconsin
Moffitt is a true "road grader" type of OG. If he can open holes for John Clay, he can certainly do the same for Steven Jackson.

Round 6: Jermale Hines, S, Ohio State
While some might argue that safety is a higher priority than Round 6, I think that often good players at that position fall to late in the draft. Could Hines be that type of player? Perhaps.

Round 7: Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama
Let's face it. The 7th round, particularly in January, is a complete crap-shoot. So, why not go with a player EVERYONE has heard of? I don't think McElroy has the arm strength to be an NFL starter, and I think most scouts will agree. That said, he has enough intelligence, leadership abilities, and accuracy to be a decent backup. Is anyone really that sold on A.J. Feely and Thaddeus Lewis as Sam Bradford's long-term backups?
