  • 2018 Offseason Checklist

Here are the spots that I think must/should be addressed.

Note that these can be filled with existing players who are FAs (i.e. Trumaine Johnson, Sammy Watkins), FAs from other teams, or draft picks. For that reason, I've included my thoughts on how these needs could/should be filled.

These are in no particular order.

Change of Pace RB/Jet Sweep Specialist: Draft/Day 3

WR/Deep Threat: Sammy Watkins, Outside FA (Paul Richardson)

    OT Depth: Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2

Center: John Sullivan, Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3, Outside FA (Weston Richburg)

    OG Depth/competition for starter: Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3

NT: Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3, Outside FA (Haloti Ngata, Dontari Poe)

Edge Rusher: Conner Barwin, Draft/Day 1, Draft Day 2-3

    Inside LB Depth/upgrade: Draft/Day 2-3

    CB (need 3): Trumaine Johnson, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3

    FS: Lamarcus Joyner, Draft/Day 2-3

Change of Pace RB/Jet Sweep Specialist: Draft/Day 3
I've been curious all season why we don't utilize Pharoah Cooper or Sammy Watkins on the jet sweeps. Both are just as dangerous as Tavon Austin with the ball in their hands. I believe this spot may already be filled with existing players on our roster.

As for the change of pace RB, Malcolm Brown definitely is not beating anyone in a foot race. However, I think Justin Davis could be our guy.

WR/Deep Threat: Sammy Watkins, Outside FA (Paul Richardson)
I don't believe we will use a Round 1 pick on a WR, so that means we either turn to FA or internally. I think Watkins is better than any player that would be a free agent. And then if I look internally, I don't really have full confidence in Michael Thomas nor Reynolds quite yet. I think this eludes to my point that we should re-sign Watkins.

    OT Depth: Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2
Agreed. Whitworth was wearing down by end of the season. He did not look particularly good against the Falcons. I also am still worried about Havenstein. If he goes against a bull-rusher, he does OK. However, the guys that possess a lot of speed coming off the corner will abuse him every time.

Center: John Sullivan, Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3, Outside FA (Weston Richburg)
I think we need to re-sign John Sullivan and then look for his eventual replacement via the draft. I think Austin Blythe did a good job this year filling in. Aaron Neary (sp?)...not so much. There are several good center Round 1 and Round 2 prospects. Unfortunately, we probably won't go that route.

    OG Depth/competition for starter: Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3
I thought our guards did a great job this year. Jamon Brown has progressed very well and I'm more confident of him than Havenstein. With that being said, we definitely need improved OG depth. I would actually love to draft Quenton Nelson out of Notre Dame in Round 1. If he's not available, Will Hernandez, Braden Smith and Frank Ragnow are very intriguing Round 3-4 prospects.

NT: Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3, Outside FA (Haloti Ngata, Dontari Poe)
This is arguably our biggest need. I really like Vita Vea in Round 1. I think he is by far the best NT prospect this year in terms of playmaking ability, size, strength, and potential. I think there is a HUGE dropoff after Vea.

If we can't land Vea, I would consider a veteran FA if we believe that they can buy into what our team is building and would be a good locker room presence.

Edge Rusher: Conner Barwin, Draft/Day 1, Draft Day 2-3
I love Barwin as a locker room leader. I don't like Barwin as a starting edge rusher. I think Barwin can be a good situational guy, but Matt Longacre and Samson Ebukam both showed a bit more explosion, speed and pass rushing ability this year. With that being said, both Longacre and Ebukam aren't ready to be starters. We have to look to the draft.

I think this is one of our other big needs. If I am looking at draft prospects, I love Arden Key, but we aren't picking early enough. I like Dorance Armstrong from Kansas as a potential Round 3 prospect, though he may go earlier than that. I like Sione Teuhema in Round 3-4.

    Inside LB Depth/upgrade: Draft/Day 2-3
I think we have sufficient depth here...the problem is our two starters. Either Ogletree or Barron needs to be upgraded, and I think Barron is the more expendable player. The problem I have with both these players is that it's not really their lack of size that's the problem...it's the incorrect mindset. Both these players were not original 3-4, bruising, gap-plugging inside linebackers. And as such, it's pretty apparent this season that this translated through their play on the field. They are both good players, but they do not fit with their current position. I've also been very disappointed with Ogletree's poor tackling this season.

A few prospects I like: Roquon Smith in Round 1. This guy is a monster and he played very well in the National Championship game to add to his outstanding performances all season. Then, in terms of what we are looking for, I would shy away from Malik Jefferson and Josh Allen. Both these guys are more Ogletree-esque. I like Micah Kiser and Josey Jewell in Round 3. I am a fan of Oren Burks but he may be gone in Round 2.

    CB (need 3): Trumaine Johnson, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Draft/Day 1, Draft/Day 2-3
I think we should re-sign TruJ.
I think we need to re-sign NRC.

That being said, we should draft a CB early in the draft anyways.

    FS: Lamarcus Joyner, Draft/Day 2-3
We need to re-sign Joyner. He is a top FS in the league. We can fill in depth with Day 2-3 picks.
