    2004 Power Rankings: Week 2
    Rank Team Rec. Comment
1 Patriots 1-0-0 The run defense might be a concern, but we're guessing Belichick and Co. will find a way to work around it.
2 Eagles 1-0-0 Apparently Donovan McNabb is pretty happy with his new toy at wide receiver.
3 Seahawks 1-0-0 Losing Shaun Alexander for any time would be a blow to this offense. Maurice Morris is decent, but he's nowhere near Alexander's league.
4 Titans 1-0-0 Not too many people saw this game, but trust us, Chris Brown is the real deal at RB.
5 Broncos 1-0-0 That move Quentin Griffin put on Jerome Woods on Sunday night was just flat out sick.
6 Vikings 1-0-0 Wow. We knew Minnesota's offense was going to be good, but they sure did put on a show Sunday.
7 Colts 0-1-0 The Colts can talk all they want about the best team not winning Thursday, but the fact remains the same: one team is 1-0 and the other isn't.
8 Packers 1-0-0 This week's bold prediction: Ahman Green will rush for over 2,000 yards this season.
9 Chiefs 0-1-0 Looks like the same story as last season. The Chiefs can score with anybody, but the defense is going to be a problem, especially against the good teams.
10 Jets 1-0-0 Obviously a healthy Chad Pennington helps Curtis Martin, but what we watched Sunday was more than that. Martin looked much more explosive than he was last season.
11 Rams 1-0-0 We heard it from Rams fans last week about their No. 16 rankings, and maybe it was too low, but they sure weren't all that impressive in Week 1 against the Cardinals.
12 Redskins 1-0-0 Things went about as well as they could have in Joe Gibbs return to the sideline in D.C.
13 Panthers 0-1-0 That Steve Smith injury was tough to watch. He really came into his own last season and was poised for even bigger things this year.
14 Steelers 1-0-0 At his current pace Jerome Bettis is going to carry the ball 80 times for 16 yards and score 48 TDs this year.
15 Ravens 0-1-0 Teams are going to stack the line against the Ravens and Jamal Lewis all season and if Kyle Boller can't make them pay, the Ravens are going to be in trouble.
16 Jaguars 1-0-0 Huge win for the Jags. Byron Leftwich might not have played well, but he got the W and that's what QBs are measured by.
17 Cowboys 0-1-0 The Cowboys aren't going to win too many games when they have to pass the ball 51 times
18 Bengals 0-1-0 All you Carson Palmer haters out there, if the Bengals stumble this year it's not going to have anything to do with the second-year QB.
19 Falcons 1-0-0 It wasn't an earth-shattering performance, but a lot of eyes were on Michael Vick and he got the Falcons a win.
20 Browns 1-0-0 What an effort by the Browns defense. We'll be the first to admit that this one caught us by surprise.
21 Saints 0-1-0 Looks like it could be the same old story for the Saints. Lots of talent, little results.
22 Lions 1-0-0 Getting that 24-game road losing streak off their backs was a huge step for this up-and-coming young team. But Charles Rogers' season-ending injury is a big blow.
23 Raiders 0-1-0 One loss and players are already complaining about substitutions and playing time! We thought they fired Bill Callahan?
24 Buccaneers 0-1-0 The Bucs looked old and slow on offense, not a good combination.
25 Bills 0-1-0 Eric Moulds (8 catches) was big in the opener, but the Bills need another receiver to step up.
26 Dolphins 0-1-0 A.J. or Jay? It really might not matter all that much. The Dolphins aren't going to be that good with either at QB.
27 Chargers 1-0-0 Apparently Drew Brees isn't ready to just hand the starting job to Philip Rivers.
28 Bears 0-1-0 Fantasy alert: David Terrell finally looks ready to be a No. 1 receiver for the Bears.
29 Texans 0-1-0 Losing to the Chargers at home in Week 1 isn't the way to start the season for what's supposed to be an up-and-coming team.
30 ***** 0-1-0 We've raved about him before in this space, but Julian Peterson is a stud. The guy is just an athletic freak.
31 Giants 0-1-0 Well, at least Eli Manning got his first big hit out of the way.
32 Cardinals 0-1-0 The Cardinals might not win much this year, but any team looking past them will be in trouble.

Keep your opinions and your rankings. You bums are going to feel awful silly when you consistently put the Rams in double digit rankings and yet they still find ways to win week in, week out.

So of course, WHOEVER the Rams beat has to be the worst team in the league, right Berman? right Salisbury?

Here's a prediction for you...the Cards go 7-9 this year and will garner, from you, a ranking somewhere in the high teens by year end.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

        2006 Power Rankings: Week 1
        RK (LW) TEAM REC COMMENT

1 (1) Seahawks 13-3-0 With Shaun Alexander and Matt Hasselbeck, people seem to overlook that the Seahawks were pretty good on defense last season (No. 7 in points allowed). If Julian Peterson can stay healthy, they'll be even better this year.

2 (5) Panthers 11-5-0 The Panthers seems to be the "it" team right now, and there are plenty of reasons why. They have playmakers on offense, a stout defense and one of the NFL's best coaches.

3 (2) Steelers 11-5-0 Willie Parker has tons of talent, but can he hold up as really the only running threat? With Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers don't have to be a team that just pounds the ball on the ground, but you know that's what they want to be.

4 (3) Colts 14-2-0 Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai obviously aren't Edgerrin James. But don't expect the Colts to suffer too much without Edge. They'll still get their points.

5 (4) Broncos 13-3-0 Jay Cutler might be the QB of the future, but if the Broncos are going to the Super Bowl, it's going to be on Jake Plummer's arm.

6 (9) Bengals 11-5-0 How many fantasy football owners out there are regretting how far they let Carson Palmer fall in their draft? We still expect the knee to be a bit of an issue, but Palmer looks like he's right back among the NFL's best.

7 (6) Patriots 10-6-0 Obviously, the Patriots will miss Deion Branch if he's not in the lineup. But Tom Brady still will find open receivers, and with Laurence Maroney added to the mix, the Pats should have a dangerous running game again.

8 (7) Cowboys 9-7-0 Seventeen weeks of T.O. and the Cowboys? We're not sure how much fun it'll be, but it should be interesting.

9 (8) Dolphins 9-7-0 All indications out of Miami are that Daunte Culpepper has been better than the Dolphins could have hoped. It'll be interesting to see whether losing a little mobility will hurt his game.

10 (11) Giants 11-5-0 The Giants have a brutal schedule. Their first seven opponents were a combined 71-46 last season.

11 (12) Jaguars 12-4-0 Were the Jaguars really that good last season, or was their schedule really that easy? The schedule is harder this year, so we should find out.

12 (15) Buccaneers 11-5-0 If Chris Simms is ready to take as big a step forward as some seem to think he is, the Bucs could be really good in 2006.

13 (13) Bears 11-5-0 Looks as if the QB job is Rex Grossman's for now. That said, signing Brian Griese was still a great move. He'll contribute at some point this season for the Bears.

14 (10) Redskins 10-6-0 The Redskins seem as if they made solid moves this offseason. But we've seen the Redskins go nuts in free agency before without its equating to more wins.

15 (18) Eagles 6-10-0 Donte' Stallworth never lived...

The first week of the NFL season has come and gone, leaving all teams either undefeated or winless and setting up a perfect time for naysayers and pollyannas to come out of the woodwork and harp on their team. So, break out your doom-and-gloom crystal ball or rose-colored glasses, cuz it's time to get off the fence.

Every week I'll be updating my own ClanRam NFL Power Rankings, and I encourage you to do so as well. Here are my Rankings after Week One:

        1. Patriots (1-0)- Tom Brady is no longer overrated in my mind, after seeing how he played against the Colts, and Corey Dillon can still run. Their only weakness is the rushing defense. You can tell they already miss Ted Washington.
        2. Eagles (1-0)- Everyone's talking about McNabb to T.O. in the red zone, but Brian Westbrook impressed me with a 17-carry, 119-yard game.
        3. Vikings (1-0)- Defense is a concern (Vinny Testaverde? Come on.), but Daunte Culpepper proved he's finally coming around as a consistent NFL quarterback after throwing for five touchdowns and - the biggest stat to me - zero interceptions.
        4. Titans (1-0)- Chris Brown will make fans in Tennesee forget about Eddie-three-yards-George.
        5. Seahawks (1-0)- They won on the road and stopped the run - two things they couldn't do last season. The loss of Shaun Alexander for a couple weeks might hinder their success early in the season.
        6. Packers (1-0)- They showed why they're a contender every year, as Ahman Green ate the Panthers alive on Monday Night.
        7. Broncos (1-0)- Looks like another 1000-yard rusher is in the works for Mike Shanahan, who takes his division rivalry games very seriously.
        8. Colts (0-1)- Peyton Manning and Edgerrin James, two guys Tony Dungy will have to rely on heavily this season, made two huge mistakes to lose the game.
        9. Jets (1-0)- The return of Chad Pennington was overshadowed by the performance of Curtis Martin; LaMont Jordan might just have to wait another year.
        10. Chiefs (0-1)- Priest Holmes will have to carry this team, as the receiving corps is depleted (Dante Hall started at WR?) and the defense showed no improvement under Gunther Cunningham.
        11. Rams (1-0)- Turnovers and a weak rushing defense don't help, but they always seem to find a way to win.
        12. Redskins (1-0)- The defense impressed me more than Clinton Portis, who took his first handoff 64 yards to the house.
        13. Steelers (1-0)- Everyone seems to look past this team, but if they can find a way to get Jerome Bettis three touchdowns with one yard rushing, they deserve a look.
        14. Panthers (0-1)- Are they a one-year wonder? The supposed best D-Line in the NFL didn't show me much against Ahman Green.
        15. Browns (1-0)- They surprised everyone by stomping the Ravens and could surprise a lot more teams this season.
        16. Falcons (1-0)- Michael Vick had an average game, but managed to squeak out a win against the worst team in...

Power Rankings: Seahawks open at No. 1

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        ESPN.com

We're pretty sure it won't make Steelers fans happy, but the Seahawks open on top after coming up just short in 2005. These rankings were compiled from seven members of ESPN.com's football staff. Each of the seven ranked the teams from 1-32, and the average of those rankings was used to determine our offseason Power Rankings. Of our seven voters, three had Seattle No. 1, three had the Steelers No. 1 and one had the Colts in the top spot.

        ESPN.com's Power Rankings
The offseason rankings were determined by a poll of ESPN.com's NFL staff -- writers John Clayton, Len Pasquarelli, Michael Smith, Scouts Inc. insiders Jeremy Green and Keith Kidd and ESPN.com NFL editors Peter Lawrence-Riddell and James C. Black.

The Seahawks lost some key players in G Steve Hutchinson and WR Joe Jurevicius, but most importantly they were able to re-sign the NFL's reigning MVP, RB Shaun Alexander. Losing Hutchinson will hurt, but don't expect it to have too much of an impact on Alexander. He might not be able to match last season's amazing numbers (1,880 yards rushing and 28 TDs), but he'll be in the neighborhood.

As for the Steelers, they lost some key players this offseason (Antwaan Randle El, Chris Hope, Kimo von Oelhoffen). But assuming Ben Roethlisberger really is ready when the season starts, Pittsburgh will be fine. Big Ben is the key at this point. All the reports are positive, but he obviously suffered some major injuries to his face, and until he gets back on the field we really won't know what kind of an impact it might have on his season.

A number of teams made big moves from the last time we ranked them (after Week 17). The Cowboys made perhaps the offseason's biggest move, signing Terrell Owens, and jumped from No. 16 in our final rankings to No. 7 this offseason. The Dolphins, who finished 2005 on a six-game winning streak, moved all the way up to No. 8 (from No. 14) and look poised to challenge the Patriots in the AFC East. Assuming he's healthy, Daunte Culpepper gives the Dolphins the top-flight QB they've lacked since Dan Marino left town.

Anyway, on to the rankings, which we're sure will look completely different after Week 1. You can rank the teams yourself with SportsNation's NFL Power Rankings.

        2006 Power Rankings: Offseason
        RK (LW) TEAM REC COMMENT
1 (2) Seahawks 13-3-0 Super Bowl losers have struggled in recent years, but the Hawks appear equipped for another run.
2 (6) Steelers 11-5-0 Obviously the injuries to Ben Roethlisberger weren't as serious as they could have been. But as much work as it sounded like he needed...
