  • Chargers LB Merriman Arrested in Domestic Call

San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested Sunday and accused of choking and restraining his girlfriend, reality TV star Tila Tequila, as she tried to leave his Southern California home.

Tequila, 27, signed a citizen's arrest warrant, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Steadman said.

Deputies responded about 3:45 a.m. to Merriman's house in Poway, north of San Diego, after a woman called to say she was choked by the player and physically restrained when she had tried to leave, according to a Sheriff's Department statement.

Merriman, 25, was taken into custody. Authorities declined to say whether he had posted bail or been released, pending an afternoon news conference.

Tequila was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.

Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, is best known for "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila," which ran for two seasons on MTV. The bisexual dating show featured men and women vying for Tequila's affections. She has also modeled for Playboy and other men's magazines.

Scott E. Leemon, an attorney for Tequila, said in a statement that neither she nor her representatives would comment publicly on the incident.

Merriman's agent, Tom Condon, said he hadn't heard about the arrest when contacted by The Associated Press.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

Merriman was the 12th overall pick out of the University of Maryland in the 2005 draft, and had 39.5 sacks in his first three years. The three-time Pro Bowl selection was getting back into shape after missing nearly all of last season with a knee injury. He played little during pre-season games. The Chargers' season begins a week from Monday night at Oakland.

Smith often speaks of signing "character" players, yet the Chargers have had their share of off-field problems in recent seasons.

Nice too see this guys is off the roids

One thing NFL players should have learn by now is the Commissioner is not playing he don't have to wait for courts to rule.

maybe the NFL needs a lockout to show the players that the NFL is not something that you are given, you have to earn the right to play. and when players doe these things it's like they are going by their own rules.

Merriman is saying that he restrained her and locked her in the house to prevent her from drink driving.

How true that is we wont know, but it certainly makes you think a bit differently about the situation if its true. Still, this is just another in a long line of domestic violence calls involving NFL players

I heard the incident happened after a double date with claude wroten and his girlfriend. If true, immediate suspension is appropriate, and when i say investigation, i mean by the commissioner.

Stopping her from drinking and driving is one thing, but putting his hands around her throat and choking her is another. Any bruises or cuts on her neck should make things more clear.

Anytime the police have to become involved, the league is not going to like it. Pushing Roger Goodell's buttons these days is not a wise thing to do, and Merriman already has a history of doing just that.

Chargers strong safety Terrence Kiel was arrested yesterday on drug charges.

The four-year veteran out of Texas A&M was summoned from the practice field after the squad finished its individual drills and before its team period, about a half-hour into practice, sources close to the team said.

He was arrested after that, but no one saw Kiel actually taken into custody.

ESPN.com, citing law enforcement sources, reported last night that plainclothes federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrived at the facility with an arrest warrant, searched Kiel's locker and car and left with the player.

Kiel was charged with possession, possession for sale and transportation of a controlled substance, according to ESPN.com's sources.

Kiel returned to the facility last night after posting bail and spoke with head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

However, neither Schottenheimer nor General Manager A.J. Smith returned phone messages last night.

The team did release this statement:

“We're aware of an off-the-field situation involving Terrence Kiel and we're monitoring the situation. Due to the personal nature of the ongoing legal investigation, the Chargers are withholding further comment until the matter is resolved legally.”

The incident is the second involving a Chargers player and law enforcement this month.

Linebacker Steve Foley was shot three times by an off-duty Coronado policeman on Sept. 3. Foley was placed on the reserve nonfootball injury list and will miss this season.

It is unclear what, if any, action the Chargers or the NFL will take against Kiel.
Kiel was a second-round draft pick in 2003 and has started 38 games for the Chargers. He was expected to start as a rookie in 2003, but he was shot three times by would-be carjackers in Houston in July and did not start until the last six games of the season. He played well enough this summer to retain his starting job after finishing last season on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Kiel was playing better this season, making a couple of big hits against Oakland and showing improved skills in coverage.

He is tied for fourth on the team with nine tackles this season for the 2-0 Chargers. Despite missing four games with the ankle injury, he fin ished fourth on the team with 59 tackles last season.

If Kiel doesn't play Sunday against Baltimore, the most likely scenario is that the Chargers would play Bhawoh Jue at free safety and move starting free safety Marlon McCree to strong safety.

Ex-Chargers safety Terrence Kiel, 27, killed following auto accident

                  CBSSports.com wire reports

SAN DIEGO -- Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed after he was thrown from a Chevy sedan he was driving, police said Saturday.

Kiel, 27, was driving alone after leaving a party at about 10:15 Friday night when he hit a wall in San Diego's upscale Scripps Ranch neighorhood and was thrown from the car, police Sgt. Alan Hayward said.

kiel was barely breathing when paramedics reached him and he died about an hour later, Hayward said.

Friends had tried to keep Kiel from driving home from the party, Hayward said, and witnesses told police he appeared to be driving in the wrong direction when he crashed.

Police would not know wheather Kiel had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol until toxicology tests were performed, Hayward said.

A second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2003, Kiel played four years in the NFL from 2003-2006, all with the Chargers.

In February 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping prescription cough syrup to Texas, the most significant of several scrapes with the law.

He was released by the team after his plea.

Kiel had been led off the practice field and arrested in the locker room by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in September 2006, suspected of shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup, apparently to be mixed with soft drinks to make a concoction known as "lean".

The felony charges were later dropped after he completed community service, and he wasa serving three years probation for the misdemeanor charges.

He was cited for urinating in public outside a San Diego nightclub in January 2007, but the city dropped that charge.
