    Cards QB Kurt Warner retires from NFL

    Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner announced his retirement Friday.
    Warner ended a career that led the historically struggling Cards to playoff appearances for the past two seasons. He also led the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 2000.
    Warner won two National Football League MVPs with the Rams and led the Cardinals to their first Super Bowl last season.
    Warner, 38, suffered a concussion this season and had hip surgery after last season. The quarterback made the announcement at a press conference Friday at Cardinals headquarters in Tempe.
    The retirement leaves the Cardinals with an uncertain future. Backup Matt Leinart will likely takeover quarterbacking duties from Warner, and the team faces decisions on other key players including wide receiver Anquan Boldin and defensive lineman Darnell Dockett.
    The Cardinals posted winning records the past two years. Previously, the team only had one winning season (1998) since moving to Arizona in 1988.
    The Cardinals hosted playoff games this and last season. Before that, the Cardinals had not hosted a home playoff game since 1947. The Bidwill family has owned the team since 1933.
    The Cardinals playoff runs were led by Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. That success has helped boost ticket sales and the team’s popularity after lacking success for decades.
    Warner and Fitzgerald also became the face of the franchise spurring jersey and merchandise sales in a Phoenix sports market historically dominated by the Phoenix Suns and last decade the Arizona Diamondbacks.
    The Cardinals did not comment on what kind of impact Warner’s retirement might have on ticket sales and demand. The team has sold out all its games since moving to University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale in 2006.
    Pro sports teams are facing a challenging economic environment in light of the housing market collapse, credit crunch and curtailed consumer spending.
    The Suns, Diamondbacks and Phoenix Coyotes are all currently running various ticket deals aimed at frugal fans. The Suns and Coyotes are also stepping up their social media efforts aimed at local fans.
    Warner, who began his pro career as a quarterback in the Arena Football League, is expected to make the NFL Hall of Fame.

    Not surprising. Warner has taken some vicious shots the last few years, with the proverbial "knock out" blow coming against the Saints when he was blindsided after an interception and had to leave the game for an extended period. With new reasearch revealing that concussions often cause serious long term effects, Warner made the right choice. He's had a legendary, storybook career and has nothing left to prove.

    He's still my favorite player of all-time and I'll miss seeing him on the field, but I'm glad he's smart enough to know it's time. As Av mentioned, Canton awaits.

    Oh yeah, the added bonus is being able to welcome Matty Leinart to the show!

      Anybody who still says Warner is not a Hall of Famer is insane. He'll be there in 5 years, no doubt about it

        It will be close ScottD....if Moon isn't in it's going to be tough to justify Warner. Not saying he won't......

          I LOVE Warren Moon, and I think he was one of the greats and should be in the hall. But he didn't win 2 MVPs and 1 super bowl MVP. He doesn't have the top 3 passing performances in SB history. He wasn't the fastest QB to 10,000 yards.

          Look at this from the AP:

          In a comparison with the 14 quarterbacks to make the Hall of Fame in the last 25 years, Warner has a better career completion percentage, yards per pass attempt and yards per game. Only Dan Marino had more career 300-yard passing games.

          In 124 regular-season games, Warner completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 32,344 yards and 208 touchdowns. He and Fran Tarkenton are the only NFL quarterbacks to throw for 100 touchdowns and 14,000 yards for two teams.

          Warner, who grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and played collegiately at Northern Iowa, ranks among the career leaders in a variety of passing statistics.

          He was also the fastest player in NFL history to 10,000 yards passing and tied Dan Marino as fastest to reach 30,000.

          He has the top three passing performances in Super Bowl history. His 1,156 yards passing in the 2008 playoffs broke the NFL record of 1,063 he set with St. Louis in 1999.

          If that isn't hall worthy, I don't know what is. But I hear you TX, it will be tough for him, and that really upsets me because he deserves it. If he played for the Steelers or Cowboys he'd be in the hall already :|

              Kurt has made enough money to last his kids a lifetime and taken enough punishment.

              Would I still like to see him play? OF COURSE! But I also understand his need to fulfill His higher calling.

              Thank you Mr. Warner for what you did for the Rams and good luck in your current (Kurt Warner Foundation) and future endeavors!

                  Kurt's press conference yesterday was defiantly man-tear worthy, especially when he talked about the eight people at home who always had his back no matter what. Every sport could use more athletes like Kurt. No, scratch that. The whole world could use more people like Kurt. He was like the Ned Flanders of the NFL-and I totally mean that as a compliment.

                      Kurt Warner has no business in being in the HoF. He was a good but not great player who was in the right place at the right time. He's only held in such high regard because he's a sentimental favorite. Once you push the fact that he was bagging groceries before he made it in the NFL from your mind and look at his career objectively, it's obvious he was good, but not great. Or in other words, not a Hall of Famer.

                        I guess he was at the right place at the right time twice. He took two laughing stock franchises to the Super Bowl, winning one, and putting his team in a position to win the other two. He's a sentimental favorite who just happened to be a great NFL QB. The guy was special and his achievements speak volumes. If you think he won't be inducted into the HOF, you need to think again.

                          Guys, all emotion aside, he really only had 5 good years. Granted, those 5 years were legendary but they were only 5 years. That's what is going to be tough for him to get into the Hall of Fame. I hope he does, but it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't.

                            In those 5 years he has done things no other qb has done.

                              I understand that Trevor but the HoF voters are picky. 5 years may not be enough to some. Not saying it won't be, but it wouldn't surprise me.
