  • Moss, Bulger rekindle memories of old game

Star receiver, quarterback talk West Virginia college football at event

    Herald Wire Reports

Marc Bulger sat alongside Randy Moss on Monday night as the former stars from West Virginia University and Marshall University signed autographs for children in Charleston, W. Va.

The gathering of two of the biggest college football names produced in West Virginia rekindled memories of 1997 when WVU and Marshall met for the first time in 74 seasons. Bulger, now the St. Louis Rams' quarterback, was a sophomore at WVU. Moss, a wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings, was a sophomore at Marshall.

    The schools haven't played since.

The pair was asked Monday if they had strong opinions about whether the series should be continued.

"When we played them, I liked it," Moss said, then turning to Bulger. "What do you think, man?"

"I think it's a good idea. But you know all the politics involved," Bulger said, prompting a laugh from Moss.

West Virginia beat the Thundering Herd 42-31 before 65,492 fans, then the 10th largest crowd in Mountaineer Field history. It marked Marshall's first game at the Division I-A level.

Moss scored two touchdowns, but Bulger's fourth-quarter touchdown pass in his first college start put WVU ahead to stay.

The schools had an agreement to play four games, all in Morgantown, from 1997-2000. But WVU athletic director Pastilong has said Marshall backed out of the arrangement, leaving WVU to play Tulsa, Miami of Ohio and Idaho.

Marshall coach Bob Pruett long has lobbied hard for the two schools to play again, although no serious negotiations between the two schools have been held in recent years.

More than 700 children and their families also enjoyed carnival rides and concessions along the Kanawha River.

It'd be great if we had another WVU/Marshall game, but I doubt it's going to happen.
