    Re: First preseason game ends

It's just the first preseason game so I am not going to be too concerned about it. But if this becomes a disturbing trend in the preseason games afterwards, then I will be concerned.

        It's preseason -

First string won't play much anyway until that third game. At that point we'll see how many yards they give up in that first half before the 2nd & 3rd units start coming in.

The pieces are just being put into place for the D line, and the youngsters they will be relying on are just that, YOUNGSTERS. How much can we really expect from them at the beginning of the season learning a new system ?? Once the real games begin I'm sure there will be some tough Sundays in the early going. I'll be taking a real look at this group and how they perform about week four. From there on they will have made the necessary adjustments, personell groupings, and scheme, to match talent that is there and then we'll see how this group will be doing as far as run defense.

They will get better as the season goes along, but I'm not expecting a top ten run defense this year. If it happens, we'll be on our way, but I'm thinking an up & down year for the youngsters of the group.

As long as there are no injuries they can give up 1075 yards for all I care.

I know we need to get out will our guys but we need to show some signs of improvement. What good is it if they are all healthy and can't stop the run. The offense does not have to show me anything, can't say that about our D.

Rambos, I agree. The Offense will be just fine, even if they have a slow start, but to see the defense get owned would not be a good start. There needs to be a sign of progression and ability to stop the run.

How bad would we look if the games ends with 400 passing yards though?? With the raga muffins they got playing QB that would be just as bad!

How can you judge a team's success or failure by how backups perform? You can't.

Let me spell it out for you. Preseason is M-E-A-N-I-N-G-L-E-S-S.

                  ...exactly.

While I would be surprised and disappointed at that 175 yard stat, it's truely meaningless. Would every Ram fan suddenly think we had the next coming of the '85 Bears if the opposite happened and we gave up 50 on the ground and 75 through the air? I would hope not, because that thinking would be just as ridiculous. Preseason is just an evaluation tool for new talent and to get the guys into football shape.

We're saying if the game ended with us giving up 175 yards on ground, what would each of us think about that.

                          Theories.....sigh.....

175 given up on the ground could be fine....it all depends on how the game was played. Did we get any turnovers? Did they pass the ball at all? How many first downs did they get? Who played on D? What was the longest run allowed?

I guess no one will watch it, it's Preseason. I guess no one kept up on FA Preseason. the draft Preseason, Camp is Preseason, IMO it all add up to having a good team, it must mean something or they would go right to the 1st game of the season.

I don't think it'll happen. All preseason games do is show if you have good depth. Colts haven't won in years, because their depth is bad, but their starters are very good. Cardinals seem to win a lot because they do have some good depth, but starters are below average.
I really like our depth this year.
But if it does happen, I would be concerned, but wait and see how we do the next week.

                                Does Pre-Season Matter?
                                by Guest
Ah yes, the fun of pre-season. Does it matter or not? I see that a lot on these boards. One side makes "too big of a deal" about pre-season and the other could care less.

What is your take on it, in detail?

                                In my personal opinion -

(Disclaimer; This is my opinion and as such I am in no way attempting to be needlessly negative and hereby allow anyone to ignore such perceived negativity in anyway. Furthermore, I would ask that you not respond to me if you see this as unnecessary negative and wish to argue with me which, ironically would result in a lot of negativity and a waste of time arguing over opinions.)

                                - I think pre-season is important to bad teams. I think how the starters look, is important.

Nothing cements this in my head more than after the 99' Superbowl, we were playing Tennessee in the pre-season rematch. Our defense could not stop anything. There was a clear and scary drop off. Our defense went on to struggle during the regular season.

So yes I think Pre-season matters. Especially with bad teams. The good teams usually rest their starters so much that you can't make judgements. Bad teams on the other hand usually try to play everyone as long as they can. Injuries do cloud things up a bit of course, but those injuries could linger into the regular season anyway.

It is what it is pre-season, these games are nothing more then a watered down practice. I have seen some of the draft picks look very good at times. As far as the first team on both sides of the ball, if they look good, how do you know the quality of the teams we are playing against are any good? Knowing most teams are playing back ups by the 1st or second quarter. To get to up due to looking good in pre-season or too low is a mistake. Itís nothing more then organized practice, this week we will see if we are much improved or not. Will we give up 200+ yards on the ground, like last year? We will have one return after another cross mid field. Will the game be over by the third quarter? We play a very good Denver team, practice is over, and itís game time!

Do you think that we need Pre-season??

The more I think bout this issue the more I hate Pre-season, it just seems a waste of great players, aka RT Jansen of the Redskins..and I'm sure the body count we grow.....What about reducing the number of games to two instead of four... is it greedy owners looking for more revenue???????....I know you need to see what sort of squad you have and get these guys up to game speed, look at different players etc....

But to me I just PRAY that we get through these dam 4 games with NO injuries...

                                Does anybody feel the same!!!!!!

                                thoughts guys

                                Itís pre-season football

Lets not panic, it pre-season football, we only rushed four sent very few blitzes and played off their WR, we played it soft. I know it sucks to watch a game like that and that is why I did not go to the game, its pre-season football. Itís nice to win the game but itís better to evaluate players you need to make a decision on, itís pre-season football. No one got hurt itís pre-season football. Our first round pick got in his first game itís pre-season football. We did not even play our back up QB itís pre-season football. We kicked on on-side kick off with the game in the balance itís pre-season football. We through a pic with time winding down in the 1st half, deep on our side of the field itís pre-season football. We had two rookies on the O-line playing together itís pre-season football.

Just try and remember itís pre-season football.

This is they type of showing I expected last week. Energy and lots of it. I don't care whether we win what I do care is whether this team shows passion, the first unit showed it so far the first quarter.
