  • Sporting News needs to get a clue!

I can not believe these comments. Do they really think Wistrom was all our success last season. This defense is returning 90% in tact and faired pretty darn well.

    Sporting News Preseason Power Poll
Dan Pompei / Posted: 14 hours ago

A look at the NFL teams, from top to bottom, as training camps open:

    1. Broncos. This team won 10 games a year ago and made some bold moves in the offseason that should pay off.

    2. Seahawks. Defensive improvements should make the Seahawks a better team, and they were pretty good a year ago.

    3. Patriots. On paper, they're better than last season's Super Bowl club. But it's almost impossible to repeat no matter how prepared a team is.

    4. Vikings. The defense should be improved enough for this team to take it to the next level in Mike Tice's third year.

    5. Eagles. A team that has been so close for three straight seasons added two difference-makers but lost some leadership.

    6. Colts. If the Colts can get home-field advantage in the playoffs, Peyton Manning and Co. are capable of running the table.

    7. Panthers. This team was absolute magic last year, but the Super Bowl runner-up will find it difficult to duplicate that success.

    8. Packers. With the incomparable combination of Brett Favre and Ahman Green, pencil in the Packers as automatic contenders.

    9. Ravens. A great running game and a stifling defense is a tremendous combination, but will the passing game improve?

    10. Chiefs. Hiring Gunther Cunningham to run the defense was a great move, but will that be enough?

    11. Rams. The offense should be fantastic, as usual, but the defense might allow as many points as the offense produces
    .

    12. Titans. As long as Jeff Fisher is the coach and Steve McNair is the quarterback, the Titans will be contenders.

    13. Cowboys. They passed on some opportunities to improve themselves, but they will remain a tough team to beat in every game.

    14. Redskins. Could Joe Gibbs have the same kind of impact on the Redskins that Bill Parcells had on the Cowboys a year ago

I agree this assesment is too critical. There are a lot of questions on the defensive side of the ball, but to say we're going to allow as many points as the offense produces is rediculous. I think our defense is going to surprise a lot of people this year.

That's rediculous. Even when the defense left something to be desired, it didn't give up as many points as we scored. Are they trying to imply that this is the worst defense the Rams will field in the last five years?

A little over the top, however, if the injury bug doesn't stop on the defensive side of the ball, well.......stay tuned

Man that whole ratings system was terrible. They seemed to put alot of undeserving teams high on the list. This definatley is a list that does not worry me and should be chalked up to more media garbage.

          2. Seahawks. Defensive improvements should make the Seahawks a better team, and they were pretty good a year ago.
Number 2 are you kidding me? I do not even know what to say to that one.

          8. Packers. With the incomparable combination of Brett Favre and Ahman Green, pencil in the Packers as automatic contenders
A team we always seem to beat. I'm sorry he is prolly one my top 5 favorite players of all time but Favre is getting up there and showed that last year a little to much.

The Rams, the cheifs, and the Ravens seemed to get a raw deal on this list.

Vikes, Packers, Ravens over the the Rams. Get real..... If all those teams play to their potential, the Rams are in the Top 5.

They just picked names out of a hat, no other way to explain this ranking.

Re: Sporting News needs to get a clue!

I don't know that I think the comment is that far over the top, but the media always exaggerates. As much of a fan of Wistrom's that I am, I know he didn't carry the defense last year, or any year. But he, among others now missing, did pose enough of a threat that manpower was wasted by opponents double teaming him and others, leaving monsters like Gateway Archuleta open to make big hits. Point is though, they ARE missing now. And some of those remaining have other things on their minds (Little). I do think our defense will struggle. It's more of a matter of how long before they jell as a unit. I do think we need to bring in more experience to back them up. I'd feel better about it anyway.

I stopped reading when I saw the Broncos rated #1.
