Raiders resigned Rolland Williams this week making him second string behind Jolly. I am guessing they are cutting Teyo.

Raiders | Johnson Demoted to Fourth String? - from www.KFFL.com
    Wed, 18 Aug 2004 07:10:35 -0700

Bill Kolb, of the Contra Costa Times, reports Oakland Raiders TE Teyo Johnson said he's been demoted to fourth string. "If I'm only the fourth best tight end on this team, you know, I don't even know what I'm doing here," Johnson said. He noted he was working with the second team offense previously, and the team discouraged him from taking a promotional trip to China with Reebok and the NFL in June. He said he's been demoted to fourth string because he went on the trip.

This kid might be worth looking at if he gets cut. He's a man w/o a position. Too big for a WR, he was too small for a TE, but it looks like he's put on a little size. Might be worth a look.

i remember the talk about this guy two seasons ago before the draft and lowdown was that his strengths are athleticism and good hands, while his weaknesses are below average blocking/mental aspect for the game...

I heard the same. I never liked him as a TE for the lack of blocking. But this guy could be a great position receiver. Good hands, big physical kid. He would be great on jump balls.

I'd prefer to grab a tight end who's more of an all-around package, but I'm sure his receiving abilities would add a lot to the position for us. It sounds as if he'd be a good fit in the role Cleeland's probably going to play for us.

i agree that johnson may upgrade the receiving aspect of our te group, but i don't think that lacking aspect is the greatest in dire need for upgrading because most of the negative plays/sacks/turnovers that i still recall from the last three seasons is the lack of pass protection from the te position, more than the lack of pass catching... it may just be my narrow view on this but i'd rather the rams upgrade on pass protecting and run blocking te...

I am hard pressed to find anyone who thought the FA acquisition of Cleeland last year was a bad deal. If having 2 TEs who better "know-the-system" by now, doesn't motivate one or the other to compete so vigorously to make the position proud, then bringing someone else in at this point continues to fuel the fire that someone never have had a clue about the TE position in the 1st place.

Maybe something ought to be done about the TE coaching position first before more hopefuls get dashed by going thru the TE merry-go-round. Angulo seemed an interesting prospect last year and even contributed on special teams. But staff gave up on him too. I'd have to look at staff real soon if the TE position leads in pond-scum early on.

Maybe my memory is going bad, but I thought the Rams placed Angulo on waivers so that they could then move him to the practice squad, only the Vikings grabbed him from us. I'm not sure that constitutes giving up on him, but then again, I might not be remembering it correctly.

Perhaps "giving up" is too strong of a phrase. Call it what you like, but placing yourself [the FO] at risk to lose a potentially valuable commodity wasn't a very strong endorsement. It strikes me the FO was still giving him the door ... maybe with prospect ... but the door nevertheless.

According to the latest Martz quote on the TE position, it seems that Manu is the answer to the TE riddle (sound familiar?), so I doubt the Rams would make a move to get another player at this point, unless an injury should occur.

yeah, martz, aka smarty pants, also pumped up some kid named brake, who did make a nice single catch from smoker in the bears game. maybe he's the newest product of the passion of martz...

I agree. The Rams don't need another tight end who can't block. Cleeland is a good receiver and Manumaleuna can block - he just doesn't know who to block.

Nick, i believe you are correct. I think this move was made to protect andy king, who someone i believe atlanta was trying to claim off our practice squad. King had to be activated, we tried to slip anuilo through, and minny grabbed him. I remember this because it was the week before we played the vikings and the speculation was that Tice grabbed him because of potential inside info. Of course, inside info wasnt going to help tice much since despite 17 consecutive pass plays with culpepper getting creamed by leonard little, they never did make any appropriate adjustments. They should have activated ron yary at halftime.
