Rams Camp at a Glance: Aug. 21

    Saturday, Aug. 21 2004

Injured: TE Cam Cleeland (hamstring), CB Robert Cromartie
(hamstring), WR Kevin Curtis (shin splints), FB Joey Goodspeed (hamstring), RB
Lamar Gordon (ankle), CB DeJuan Groce (knee), DT Jimmy Kennedy (foot), LB Tony
Newson (hamstrong), OT Jeremy Phillips (neck), OT Kyle Turley (back), OT Grant
    Williams (ankle).

Absent: OT Orlando Pace (contract), DE Leonard Little (personal
    leave).

Today's schedule: One practice, at 7 p.m. at Rams Park. All
practices at Rams Park are closed to the public.

    BITS AND PIECES

G Tom Nutten, back with the Rams after "retiring" following the 2002 season,
was wearing his old number, 61. Rookie G Larry Turner, who had had that number,
    switched to 64.

Friday afternoon's practice couldn't be filmed because the truck in which the
equipment was housed hadn't completed the trek from Macomb, Ill., to St. Louis.

    OVERHEARD

"He's done a great job. Marshall looks real good."
    - Coach Mike Martz, on RB Marshall Faulk, who has withstood several
    consecutive days of steady work.

"I'm here to compete and hoping to contribute to the team. So if that's
the way I get on the field faster, that's what I'll do."

    - Rookie Anthony Hargrove, a DE who has been taking reps at DT.

    - Bill Coats

The "safe and sound" category assumes kennedy does not get put on injured reserve, which could go either way at this point.
If brian howard doesnt make it, i think he goes on the practice squad.

I can't imagine that Hosley won't make the team.

(hamstring), RB Lamar Gordon (ankle), CB DeJuan Groce (knee), DT Jimmy Kennedy
(foot), OT Jeremy Phillips (neck), OT Kyle Turley (back).

Sunday's schedule: One practice, at 7 p.m. at Rams Park. All
practices at Rams Park are closed to the public.

          Bits and pieces

DE Leonard Little returned to practice Saturday. He had been gone since Tuesday
because of the death of his grandmother in North Carolina.

Several players were back in pads after missing time - some lengthy, some brief
          - because of injuries: TE Cam Cleeland (hamstring), WR Kevin Curtis (shin
splints), DE Bernard Holsey (knee), LB Tony Newson (hamstring) and OT Grant
          Williams (ankle).

Rookie Anthony Hargrove, who is making the switch from DE to DT, was banished
to the locker room by defensive line coach Bill Kollar with about 30 minutes
          left in practice.

          Overheard

"We can always use 'Big O' around here. When he's ready, he'll
          come."
          - C Andy McCollum, on Pace.
"I'm on that dang rabbit diet." - G Chris Dishman, who
reported to camp at 366 pounds but has dropped close to 20.

Injured: CB Jerametrius Butler (hamstring), LB Brandon Chillar (shoulder), TE Cam Cleeland (hamstring), CB Robert Cromartie (hamstring), CB Travis Fisher (knee), DE Anthony Hargrove (knee and ankle), FB Erik Jensen (knee), DT Jimmy Kennedy (foot), S Tom Knight (finger), DE Leonard Little (hamstring), LB Brandon Spoon (hamstring), OT Kyle Turley (back), C Dave Wohlabaugh (hip).

          Absent: OT Orlando Pace (contract).

Today's schedule: The Rams and the Chicago Bears will scrimmage at 10:30 a.m. at Western Illinois University's Hanson Field. Some lawn tickets remain, at $10. For up-to-date information, call toll-free 1-866-726-7226.

          Bits and pieces:

DE Leonard Little sat out Friday's practices with a tight hamstring.

RB Lamar Gordon was back on the field after missing a day of work with a sore ankle.

Defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, who suffered a broken foot Thursday, has put off surgery while he seeks a second opinion. Kennedy, the team's first-round draft pick in 2003, is expected to be out for at least three months.

S Tom Knight had surgery Thursday night in St. Louis on the finger that he broke earlier in the day. Knight was back in camp Friday and should return to practice in a few days.

          Overheard:

"We're just going to take a look at a bunch of our young players, some inexperienced players. Our veterans will probably do very little, if anything."
          - Coach Mike Martz, on his plans for today's scrimmage.

"I feel like a wet dog on tile out there." - C/G Chris Dishman, on his first full-pads practices since last season.
"I've been teasing the guys. We probably have our quota right now."
          - S Aeneas Williams, on the ex-Cardinals, himself included, on the Rams roster.

          Bits and pieces:
After Saturday morning's scrimmage with the Chicago Bears, the Rams had the rest of the day and most of Sunday off. They returned Sunday evening for meetings.
QB Chris Chandler and DE Sean Moran, offseason free-agent pickups, are in their second stints with the Rams. Chandler played for the Los Angeles Rams in 1994 and Moran was with the team in 2000 and 2001.

          Overheard:
"He looks like the Marshall of old out here, but we'll see. We're really cautious with him. He feels so good, and when he's like that we try not to put a damper on it. But we also just want him to be cautious and take this thing in stride." - Coach Mike Martz, on frisky RB Marshall Faulk.
"I felt comfortable hanging the whistle over my neck and the stopwatch. That was pretty fun, telling kids what to do." - C-G Chris Dishman, on his duties as a high school coach in Lincoln, Neb., before Martz persuaded him to "unretire" and report to Rams camp.

          Absent: OT Orlando Pace (contract).

Just visiting: NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Today's schedule: The Rams and the Chicago Bears will practice together twice, at 8:10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Times are subject to change. For up-to-date practice information, call toll-free 1-866-726-7226. Practices are free and open to the public.

          Bits and pieces:

RB Lamar Gordon skipped Thursday's workout. He's had chronic ankle problems and has been gimpy at times during camp.

RB Steven Jackson, the Rams' top draft pick, appears to be adapting quickly, his effectiveness seemingly increasing day by day.

Damione Lewis and Ryan Pickett have been solid in the middle of the defensive line.

Bears WR Justin Gage, a former All-Big 12 performer at Missouri, is nursing a lower back injury.

Bears QB Rex Grossman sailed a pass 75 yards in the air, overthrowing his intended receiver, in Thursday's drills.

          Overheard:

"I can only say this: I've never come across a coach like him. I think he'll be very successful."
          - S Aeneas Williams, on first-year Bears coach Lovie Smith, the former Rams defensive coordinator.

"Preseason was the last time I've played completely healthy. So, it's been almost a year. I feel like I've got to get out there and show them that I can still contribute."
          - Second-year WR Kevin Curtis, who missed nearly all of last season with a broken leg.
