    Warner's absence not on Rams' list of problems

    The Rams have a lot of problems that will need to be quickly addressed:

    1. The offensive line must be solidified. Pace needs to be signed and the team needs to decide who is going to start at LG and RT from the group of Dishman, King, Tercero and Williams. Even with Wohlobaugh and Turley out, once Pace returns there will be enough talented individuals on the roster. But none of that will matter until a UNIT is selected and allowed to come together.

    2. The defensive line needs to play better. From what I saw last night, Flowers will not make it as an every down DE. He just can't hold up on the run against OTs. Fisher was a little better, as was Hargrove. Toyoka Jackson should get more playing time, and possibly even start.

    3. Fisher's injury must be addressed. In all likelihood, that will mean Garrett starting at CB. He has great speed and had some good plays last night. But he'll need help, and Groce needs to get healthy and contribute.

    4. Martz needs to make a decision on the WRs. From what I've seen, McDonald and Curtis are ready to contribute, and should get some playing time over Furrey and Looker.

    5. Bulger needs to be more decisive. There's no doubt he can carve up a defense when he has time to throw, but when he doesn't, he must do a better job of improvising, even if that simply means launching the ball out of bounds.

    Kurt Warner does not appear on this list and never will. Kurt would not help with problems 1 through 4, and from what I've seen in the Giants preseason games, there's no reason to presume that he would solve problem #5 if he were still here.

    If Warner fanatics want to blame every problem the Rams have on Warner's absence, that's their choice. That choice has nothing whatsoever to do with reality, though.

    I am not saying Warner is the answer. What I am saying is that Bulger isn't the answer. I am also saying that a new coach may be the answer if Martz can't find a way to change how he calls a game, and how he uses the personnel he has to work with.

      This is most worrisome. WR, CB, OLB, FB, & (to a degree) RB & SS - these are all positions that can be "microwaved", that is a rookie or FA in one of these positions can pick up the game rather quickly and produce at a high level soon out of the gate. O-lines, however, are more "slow roasted", or maybe "crockpotted" (is that a verb?). Time is the only thing that get them past their learning curve. Think of an O-line as one position. We've got to figure out who is going to play that position and get that position set. I thought last year was our "gelling" year, but with injury we now have to endure anther "gel" year. If we can gain some consistency, I'm willing to wait.

      Until then, do away with max protect. Max protect isn't going to work any better than min protect, and in fact it gives Bulger fewer options. If he's going to get hit anyway, he might as well have an additional hot route or an RB in the flats to hit. It worked from '99 - '01, may be time to revisit until the O-line finishes its slow-roasting.

      Kurt Warner does not appear on this list and never will. Kurt would not help with problems 1 through 4, and from what I've seen in the Giants preseason games, there's no reason to presume that he would solve problem #5 if he were still here.
      Do we really have to go through these motions again?

      He's going to get caught up on runs to the outside, but I think he will be fine on pass defense. Losing Fish sucks, but Garrett will be better than some think. He will be starting next year anyway, regardless.

        I agree. I think playing Tercero out of position will hurt his development as a potential starting guard, but when three of your starters are out of camp, what are you gonna do? You can't practice against an imaginary lineman. I'd like to see Williams playing right tackle against the Redskins regardless of whether or not Pace is back at LT, if only because I'd like Williams to get as much experience at his eventual starting position as possible. That would allow Tercero to move back inside, and I think it would best mimic our projected starting offensive line with the exception of Pace at LT.

          Wiser words have never been spoken....okay maybe they have, but Nick, you made a great point here. Let's get Williams and Tercero in place now! Leave the fill-in at LT until Pace shows up. I know, it exposes Bulger's blind-side, but hey, he's getting hit from everywhere as it is now.

          Yea, I know. I figured Angels comment would give life to the "Warner sucks, no Bulger sucks" debate, and I assumed that was what sparked Avengers reply, but I was just hoping we could move on (as the popular phrase goes). But, I understand, do what you gotta do.
          How do you figure? We matched the multi-year offer on Butler, and Fisher isn't in a contract year (at least not that I'm aware of). Are you saying Garrett will win a starting job this season because of Fisher's injury and Garrett's own outstanding play? I can't imagine that Garrett would keep the starting job unless Fisher comes back from injury and looks like a crap sandwich.
          Fisher is done for the year, which will give Garrett (probably) a full year of experience. That coupled with him having the most upside (IMHO) will be his path to a starting position next year. Granted, it's my speculation, but I think this time next year, Garrett will be our #1 CB. The position battle will be who's the #2 corner, Fisher or Butler.
          The more things change, the more they stay the same.

            They have got still two weeks of Pre-season and a week or two in the season to pull this together. Injuries are part of football-coach...deal with it! So far this has the makings of a bad year. Could be a little soon to say that,but whoa, what a performance last night! Chemistry is everything. I think if everyone watches close enough, You may see that it really isn't there. We are goona know for sure come week one!!!!!

              :ramlogo: I totally agree Warner's absense is not even among our problelms. But you know if we don't win the Super Bowl this year we will have all the Warner hanger ons saying it was because he is not here. My thoughts are that we need a new head coach. Mad Mike doesn't seem to have the abilities to get everyone ready and keep his mind on the whole game. God I wish Pace and the Rams would get together and settle this contract thing. We sure need him and hopefully Turley will be able to come back soon. Please all you Warner Hangers On Drop it he is gone and will never be back. The game goes on. :ramlogo:

                I agree. It'd be one thing if the line was protecting him now and making ths switch offered potentially worse protection. But after watching last night's game, you may as well have the sub at LT and get the rest of the line cemented. Who knows, maybe that'll improve things.

                I'd like to move on as much as the next person. We should be concentrating on the team we have now, not the team some think we should have had.

                Sounds pretty good to me. It sounds like we'd have a good bit of depth if things play out that way.

                  Nick, I totally agree. Have you thought of conveying this wisdom to the Rams? Then again, it makes too much sense so they might just throw it out the window.

                      The question is, is it possible to replace a hyped up Turley who in fact had

                      Thanks for the comments. Sure it's possible (probable) to replace Turley,
                      and the offensive line can be a lot better. As they say, the cemeteries are
                      full of indispensable people, so any OL is replaceable. The bigger thing to
                      me is that individuals don't make a great line. Matt Light, Russ Hochstein,
                      Dan Koppen, Joe Andruzzi and Tom Ashworth won last year's Super Bowl. The
                      other side had Steussie, Donnaley, Mitchell, Jeno James and Jordan Gross. A
                      couple of good players, a couple of average ones, and a rookie. I'm more
                      than OK with Pace and Grant Williams at T. My concern is that Timmerman and
                      McCollum, with lots of miles on them, got pushed around a little bit last
                      season. I think they need to be more stout, a tougher group than last year.
                      Additionally, while Turley didn't take well to the coaching and the system,
                      he's still a great player. It couldn't hurt to have him.

                      "big" statements just crap? When do you expect Pace to sign the tender and

                      (Opening comments on injuries)
                      “CB Travis Fisher, obviously, (will get) surgery, with a plate in the bone. No one completely knows when we will be getting him back. We could be very optimistic and say eight to 10 weeks, or you can be pessimistic and say three to four months. Nobody really knows, so there is no sense in putting a time on it. When he’s back, he’s back. It’s very unfortunate. He was having a heck of a game. We were very excited about his play. He had about 15 plays. It was just a freak accident. QB Marc Bulger injured his knee in the first series. He’s getting an MRI as we speak. LB Tommy Polley has a shoulder injury, a rotator cuff. And then DT Tyoka Jackson had an injury to his shoulder. Everyone else came out clean, so the significant one is losing Travis. He’s a terrific corner and it will be hard to replace him. It just gives someone else an opportunity, like CB DeJuan Groce or CB Kevin Garrett, to step in there and take charge. That’s what they are here for. They get paid for this opportunity. They need to make the most of it, and I’m sure they will.”

                      (On positives seen during the game)
                      “A couple of good things, DT Brian Howard and Tyoka (Jackson) were terrific in that game. All three linebackers, (Brandon) Chillar, Pisa (Tinoisamoa), and Robert Thomas, I thought played very well. I think that RB Marshall (Faulk) and Steven Jackson play exceptionally well. I was very excited watching the tape. Marshall’s burst and his speed. Obviously we have some things going for us on the offensive line. We had T Grant (Williams) trying to play for us on a bad wheel, and some other things that you guys well know. So we didn’t want to leave (Faulk) in there too long. But he did get 13 snaps in there. He had a chance to carry the ball, catch a pass, then get him out of the game. Steven, I thought, really picked it up. I was very pleased with his effort. He ran hard and he was very impressive with his change of direction. Some of the jump cuts that only smaller backs seem capable of doing, he demonstrated a couple of those during the game. He lowered his shoulder and ran through a couple of tacklers. I was very excited and pleased with how he ran the ball and just his skills. He did make some mental errors that did cost us on key third downs, and of course that needs to get cleaned up. The offensive line, (G Adam) Timmerman has a shoulder (injury), and probably won’t practice this week and we’ll see how he is for the game. We have some problems with the offensive line that will not get resolved in the next day or two. It’s going to take some time. Tommy (Nütten) needs to come back. We need to get G Chris Dishman in shape. He did play much better than I thought he would at this point, but we still have a ways to go on the offensive line. On a more positive note, G Scott Tercero continued to play terrific. He was outstanding again. So...

                      What is the single most important factor to the Rams' success this season?

                      I believe it's the running game. The Rams had one of the worst running offenses in the league last year, and I think it hindered what this offense was able to do. I believe that if the Rams reestablish themselves as a team that can not only dominate through the air but also run the ball effectively with both Marshall Faulk and Steven Jackson, then this team will go deep into the playoffs.

                      What are your thoughts?

                      First of all let me just say that these last few years have been VERY frustrating and embarassing for me as a RAM FAN and I'm sure you guys are just as disappointed. I have watched my team go from the greatest show on turf to, as a washington post columnist said after the redskins loss, " the most miserable mass on grass". MY main question here is , " How far are the rams from being a decent competitive rock solid team? Its a long way to go; it doesnt happen overnight but it shouldnt take FOREVER either.


                      But I am not gonna sit here and talk about that all night. We know what has happened. We know what we've become. 13 straight losses dating back to last season. 3-13 in 2007 and 2-14 in 2008. 5 wins in the last 30 or so games? ( not sure exactly the stats) That is horrible.

                      Let's go back year by year as to how we finished record wise.
                      In the 1990's we were bad. But so were other teams which are now good today. But if you look at our 90's record to others, you will see that we were bad most of those years. Other teams had bad years too during the 90's but it was only really the lions, bengals, cardinals and saints. That should show you how bad of a team the Rams are. We never finished over 7 wins from 1990 up until 1999, which was our superbowl year. Which now tells me that the Rams have been bad, are now bad, and I hope we dont continue to be bad. But lately one has to believe that that is the penalty for our actions.

                      2000- 10-6 DECENT
                      2001- 14-2 ( excellent; we beat the pats that season but lost in the SB to the same :|)
                      2002- 7-9 Not bad
                      2003- 12-4 excellent
                      2004- 8-8 not bad; competitive
                      2005- I think we were 7-9 or 6-10 cant remember
                      2006- 8-8
                      2007- 3-13 horrible
                      2008- 2-14 lousy

                      I am not surprised at how we have fallen so badly. What I cant seem to understand is how fast we have fallen as such. How come we havent been able to stop the bleeding and bounce back like other teams have seemed to?

                      So tell me guys. How far off is this team from competing? Well, I look at the league and I have noticed that most of the other teams have playmakers in a lot of key positions. Why is that? Because they do a great job of DRAFTING PLAYERS THAT FIT INTO THEIR SCHEME WELL. We on the other hand have not done that lately. We have drafted players that have done well IN THEIR SCHEME and so it didnt matter to the previous regime ( Jay ZYgmunt ) if they fit or not the point was they wanted them so much that they drafted them regardless of their college scheme and success. In the era since Martz left, we have drafted the likes of busts ( or so they appear to be) like Tye Hill, Adam Carriker, Claude Wroten, Fakhir Brown, etc. The list goes on and on.

                      THIS HAS REALLY HURT THIS ORGANIZATION SO MUCH THAT IT IS REARING ITS UGLY HEAD NOW. Bad drafting has put us in such a talentless hole that...

                      “It was a change of pace. It was good to get them outdoors and move around a little bit. That’s what these fields are for. We haven’t been on them for about four months, or whatever it has been.”

                      (On how the offensive line is progressing)
                      “Good. I’m very pleased with the progress of G (Scott) Tercero and G Chris Dishman. We know our center and right guard are stellar performers. T Grant Williams is now on the mend, and he was really having a terrific camp. Those guys are solid and I’m very pleased with that. We are a little thin right now, particularly in experience. We’ll be fine.”

                      (On T Grant Williams’ injury)
                      “He has so much scar tissue from the surgery that every now and again he tweeks it. When that happens, from the way they explained it to me, sometimes it scares you. His biggest (problem) is not so much the pain, but keeping (his ankle) strong. I think he feels much better now than he did a week ago.”

                      (On how G Tom Nütten has been playing)
                      “Tommy had a nice practice yesterday and I think he’s coming back into it really well. I think a little faster than he anticipated. His stuff is coming back to him pretty good, He needs to play here. We’ll get him in there and let him play.”
