  • 53-Man Roster

Here's my take on the 53-man roster. I can't remember if we IR'd Kennedy or not but here it goes.

    QB: Bulger, Chandler, Smoker
    RB: Faulk, Jackson, Gordon, Harris
    FB: Goodspeed, Massey
WR: Holt, Bruce, McDonald, Looker, Curtis, Furrey
    TE: Manumaleuna, Cleeland, Brake
    OT: Pace, Williams, Tercero
    OG: Timmerman, Tercero, Dishman, King
    C: McCullom, Turner
DE: Little, Fisher, Jackson, Hargrove, Flowers
    DT: Pickett, Lewis, Howard
LB: Tinoisamoa, Thomas, Chillar, Polley, Newson, Faulk
    SS: Archuleta, Coady
    FS: Williams, Lucas, Shivers
CB: Butler, Garrett, Groce, Anderson, Fisher
    K: Wilkins
    P: Landeta

Notable Cuts: Greg Randall, Erik Jensen, Sean Moran, Brandon Spoon, Tom Knight

    Your thoughts?

I'm on the fence with Brake or Jensen, actually hoping Jensen makes the cut.

Well whichever Tight End doesn't make it will end up on the practice squad.

I think Holsey might be in the DT running, unless you know something I don't.

          Pretty Good, Assessment.
          Seems REAL CLOSE.

My Only "Adjustment" Would Be To Also Place J. Bulter (Broken Forearm), On The I.R. List, As Well - And Either Keep Greg Ranall - OR - Tom Knight On The Active Roster.
8 to 10 Weeks Is A Long Time To Heal.
And There's No Guarantee J. Bulter Will Be In "Football Shape" After That Time Period.
Why Tie Up An Active Roster Spot With A Player OUT, For More Than 3/4th of the Season ???

Please tell me you meant T. Fisher instead of J. Butler. If Butler broke his arm too, I am going to be a little bummed.

As far as I know, Butler's fine. If Travis Fisher's only going to miss 10 weeks, we can get him back for the last 6 games of the regular season and the playoffs. IR'ing him would eliminate that possibility.

As for Holsey, Brian Howard's been playing well. I don't expect the team to keep both of them and since Holsey's been having injury problems, he's on his way out.

Good assessment ZigZagRam. Your also have an extra roster spot since you put Tercero twice on the list. How about Randall?

How about that kid Eason? He has some hop and some pop. I'd like to see him on special teams and as a db backup.

Jensen or Brake... HMMMM... I have not seen either make a play.

I also think that Greg Randell (sp?) might make the aquad.

Whoops. If Nutten is actually going to play I bet he makes the squad. Aparently Randall has far from impressed.

Updated 53 man roster to reflect the recent moves (praying of course for no injuries in camp that effect this)

                            Offense (26)

                            bulger, chandler, smoker
                            faulk, jackson, gordon
                            goodspeed, harris
                            mamliamula, cleeland, jensen
bruce, holt, curtis, looker, mcdonald, furrey
                            pace, turley, williams
                            timmerman, mccollum, king, tercero
wohlambaugh, eby or turner (the other makes the practice squad)

                            Defense (24)

                            pickett, lewis, kennedy, holsey/brian howard
                            little, fisher, jackson, hargrove, flowers/moran
thomas, pisa, polley, chillar, two of the following (newsom, spoon, lloyd, trev faulk, justin smith, mcwilliams)
                            fisher, butler, groce, garrett
a williams, archuleta, coady, shivers, lucas

                            specialists (3)

                            wilkens, massey, nicassio/landetta

Other guys with a shot, but more likely candidates for the practice squad (unless someone gets hurt)

nick burley, sheddrick copeland, nijrell eason, brian sump (kick returner)

Other practice squad candidates- the 4th qb, coleman (wr), anyone else??????

If Moran gets beat out, he probably gets waived. If brian howard gets beat out, he probably winds up on the practice squad, along with two linebackers and at least one guy from the secondary.

                            Any updated thoughts from anyone?

                            Rams roster into training camp
                            by Guest
During the ceremony my daughter and I held tonight at exactly 5pm central, as the players were checking in for camp, i did my best public address anouncer imitation for her and recited the entire 53 man roster from memory as she cheered for each guy. I believe that barring injury, the offense is basically set unless sump beats out furrey for a receiver spot in order to serve as the return guy.

bubble spots- backup linebackers (special teams key). we will carry six, two spots available for tony newsom, spoon, lloyd, justin smith, trev faulk, mwilliams.
Defensive end- Will moran make the team? I predict no.
Defensive Tackle _ Will brian howard make the team. I predict practice squad.
Punter- Will Landetta get beat out? Could go either way.

Here is what it looks like

                            bulger, chandler, smoker
                            faulk, jackson, gordon
                            goodspeed, harris
bruce, holt, looker, curtis, macdonald, furrey (sump)
                            mamliamula, cleeland, jensen
                            pace, turley, williams
                            wolabaugh, turner
                            timmerman, mccollum, king, tercero

                            Wilkens, Landetta/Nicasso, Massey

Little, fisher, tyoka jackson, hargrove, flowers (moran)
pickett, lewis, kennedy, holsey (brian howard)
thomas, pisa, polley, chillar, two of the following (spoon, lloyd, newson, burley, justin smith, trev faulk, mcwilliams)
                            fisher, butler, garrett, groce
aeneas williams, archuleta, coady, shivers, lucas

Biggest variable, outside of the backup linebacker spots is injuries. Hopefully, we will make it through camp and the preseason with nothing more than a few bumps and bruises here and there.

ramming speed to all, as always, i would love your analysis of the roster,

                            My Offseason Scorecard
                            by AvengerRam_old
Given that the Rams probably won't make any major personnel changes from now until the season starts, its a good time to evaluate the offseason. Here's how I see it:

                            QB:

                            2003: Bulger/Warner/Covington
                            2004: Bulger/Chandler/Smoker

The starter has not changed. Chandler, though not as good as Warner, may be better suited in the backup role as his presence does not create controversy. Smoker is a better prospect than Covington. IMPROVED

                            RB/FB:

                            2003: Faulk/Gordon/Harris; Goodspeed
                            2004: Faulk/Jackson/Gordon; Goodspeed/Harris

The addition of Jackson is an upgrade at RB. Harris at FB is intriguing. IMPROVED

                            WR/TE:

                            2003: Holt/Bruce/Looker/Furrey/McDonald/Curtis; Manumaleuna/Cleeland
                            2004: Holt/Bruce/Curtis/Looker/McDonald/Furrey; Manumaleuna/Cleeland

Same cast, but Curtis and McDonald are healthy. IMPROVED

                            OL:

                            2003: Pace/Turley/Wohlabaugh/McCollum/Timmerman
                            2004: Pace/Turley/Wohlabaugh/McCollum(?)/Timmerman

Other than the possibilty that McCollum might be supplanted by a younger player, nothing has changed. SAME

                            DL:

                            2003: Wistrom/Pickett/Lewis/Young/T.Jackson/Little/Fisher/Kennedy
                            2004: Fisher/Pickett/Lewis/T.Jackson/Little/Kennedy/Hargrove/Moran

The loss of Wistrom and Young put this unit in decline, but there is at least hope with the potential of players like Kennedy and Hargrove. DECLINE

                            LB:

                            2003: Tinoisamoa/Thomas/Polley/Duncan
                            2004: Tinoisamoa/Thomas/Polley/????

It is uncertain who will emerge as the fourth LB (Chillar, Spoon, Faulk, Newson, Lloyd are all possiblities). But, whoever it is, the depth should be better than last year. IMPROVED (slightly)

                            DB:

                            2003: Fisher/Butler/Williams/Archuleta/Groce/Garrett/Walton/Sehorn
                            2004: Fisher/Butler/Williams/Archuleta/Groce/Garrett/Shivers/Walton

Again, not much change. I expect that Shivers will be an improvement over Mr. Angie Harmon, but we'll have to see. SAME

                            ST:

                            2003: Wilkins/Landeta/Harris(KR)/Furrey(PR)
                            2004: Wilkins/Landeta/????/????

Unclear who will be the KR and PR. I hope that Groce can emerge as the PR (i.e. not muff punts), as I think he has a lot of potential there. UNCERTAIN

                            Coaching:

                            2003: Martz/Fairchild/Smith
                            2004: Martz/Fairchild/Marmie

The addition of Marmie should not change too much with the defense, other than the weight of the DTs. Fairchild seems to be getting more responsibilities. Too close to call. SAME

                            Total scorecard:

                            IMPROVED: 4
                            DECLINE: 1
                            SAME: 3
                            UNCERTAIN: 1

All in all, despite the minimalist approach, a pretty good offseason for...

The Final 53 Man Roster-Very Few spots available
                            by Guest
Lets take a quick look at what we know about the final 53 man roster. For purposes of this post, lets be optimistic and assume that no one gets hurt before the season starts.

                            Offense (27)

                            bulger, chandler, smoker
bruce, holt, curtis, looker, mcdonald, furrey
                            mamliamula, cleeland, jensen
                            goodspeed, harris
                            pace, turley, grant williams
                            wohlabaugh, eby
timmerman, mccollom, andy king, larry turner, tercero
                            faulk, jackson, gordon

Note: I am probably over by one offensive lineman, ie it is likely that turner could be on the practice squad

                            Defense (25)

Little, Fisher, Flowers, Hargrove, Tyoka Jackson, Moran
Pickett, Lewis, Kennedy, Bell (or another veteran if we dont win the claim on bell)
a williams, archuletta, coady, shivers, lucas/walton/copeland
                            fisher, butler, groce, garrett
thomas, pisa, polley, chillar, two of the following (newsom, jeremy lloyd, nick burley, jason mcWilliams, Justin Smith, spoon, trev faulk)

                            Specialists (3)

                            Wilkens, Landetta, Massey

That gets us to 55, meaning I am two guys over. Probably means one of the offensive lineman (ie turner) winds up on the practice squad, and potentially moran doesnt make it or we dont sign another defensive tackle). Positionally, we carried six linebackers last year so i am assuming that we wont carry more this year, but if we do, someone else will have to get cut or put on the practice squad.

The practice squad this year expands to 8 players. Candidates include Larry Turner, safties and corners that dont make the roster (ie shedrick copeland), nick burley, possibly michael coleman again at wr, the qb we just signed (micahnah sp?), and especially some number of the linebackers that dont make the team since we will need depth there for special teams play.

To me, at the margain, the key will be the ability to contribute on special teams. I believe that the most viscious battle will be for the backup linebacker spots since there will be no clear cut answers.

I defy you to find another team in the nfl that has so few spots up for grabs at this point of the year. I take that as a good thing since i think that our young guys will improve given the year of experience. While we have not added a lot via free agency, we have added some key help in the draft and we have retained some solid young guys.

I look forward to your thoughts and input as always.
