  • What do you think...

... is the biggest surprise of the Preseason?

I think the biggest so far is the play of Chillar. Who would have thought that he would outplay Polley, particularly in the last year of his contract? :ramlogo:

    Re: What do you think...

I would go with Tercero. When the preseason began I didn't know if he would even make the team, now he looks to be in line for significant time on this offensive front. He's made himself too valuable to overlook by learning all 5 spots on the line. With this team, one guy that can play anywhere on the O-line is as valuable as a starter.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'd have to say Sean McDonald. I really didn't expect him to look this good.

Yeah, if we got a rookie LB outdoing Polley, then I'd say that our LB corps is weak, or that Chiller is a stud, and we got a great draft steal. Season says.......

Actually, I've been very pleased with the Special Teams this year. They look like they are more in tune with what needs to be done.

Hello?!? Missed the fact that the Dead Man is no longer just walking but is also punting did you?! You'd get more distance out of Landeada's leg if Massey just threw the ball at his shin and let it bounce off.

Hello?!? Do you just randomly post nonsense? Landetta's has 10 punts in the preseason for an average of a hair under 43 yards per punt, including punts of 52 and 51 yards. Maybe you should actually look at the facts.

                Agree 100%.

As for the anti-Landeta guy, do you actually watch the games, or do you just assume you know what's going to happen. There's been more than one occassion where you've spoke against the Special Teams this year who have been solid, and 150% better than last season.

AV is right. Landetta has enough leg to get our defense in to position. The trick is the punt coverage team, which does appear to be playing with a little more fire.
                  However...

First, I'd like to correct you. I was referring to the Landeada guy. Second, I have done both.

I watched the papers print that his 1st and only punt of the first pre-season went less that 40 yards (I attributed that to gentrification and gave him a do-over on that one). The 1st punt of the 2nd game barely got beyond the 50 when the team was backed up inside its own 20 (I attributed that to the fact that he had only 8 days from the previous game to work on dropping the ball, getting the nose of the ball to point in the right direction, making sure his eye-hand-feet coordination, have I gone on too long?)

So, yes I have seen some things and yes I am assuming that he continues with his seasonal trends of not getting better with age. I am willing for him to make an asss out of me however.

And maybe all the smoke and haze in my line of sight obscured his polished pre-season stats. For that I don't apologize. I've seen enough already to know that he'd have to do much more for me to consider him in the same breath as Nolan Ryan, Gordie Howe, Kareem, or Blanda.

Who wouldn't? If he gets any direction he might save the coverage team from tackling also.

Last season Landetta had an average punt of 42.8 yards. That is only 2 yards under his best season and only .5 yard under his career average. This off-season he has 10 punts with an average of 42.9 yards per punt. This is pretty much what we are going to get every time.

He was tied for 8th in the NFL last year for yards per punt.
He is ranked 13th in the NFL this preseason.

He's not spectacular but he will be fine. We have to stop the return.

I think the suprise on the offense side of the the ball would be Tercero and Chillar on the defense side. But I am pleasantly pleased with McDonald and Garrett. Keep it up boys.

You didn't really just try to make a case for Landeada based on last year's numbers did you?

How about these numbers: - 57 yards - that was his longest which placed him 22nd of 30. 14 - that's the number of balls downed inside the 20 which placed him tied for 25th place. 32.9 - that was his net average which placed him 28th. 15.1 - that's the return average which placed him last as in 30th of 30.

And before you blame the coverage team for these numbers imagine how much more likely it would have been for the return team to get to the point of attack if there was at least hang time to make up for the lack of distance. Or imagine how many might not have been returned if placement was not just inside the 20, which stunk, but which were out of bounds so tackling would have been a non issue. And if you want to say 2TDs for touchdowns skewed the numbers like I would, then I ask you where his tackling abilities were on those plays?

If you want to believe, more power to you, but try to avoid last year's numbers because I think the corpse can be seen to have started stiffening already.

                                (Opening statement)
“We’ve had a couple of roster moves. We added a couple of offensive linemen in (G Darnell) Alford and (G Blaine) Saipaia, that we’ve added to the roster. And Dedrick Roper, a linebacker, we picked up off the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers. So we have made a couple of moves. Nick Burley back to the practice squad. Some of these things we think they are really going to help us. Other than that, I think we are pretty healthy. Obviously, we are not going to have (CB Travis) Fisher in this game, or Tom Nütten, but other than that, by in large, we are pretty healthy. In terms of the Cardinals, it’s always difficult to play a team in the opener that has a new (coaching staff), and you’re really not sure what you are going to see on either side of the ball. Of course in preseason, so much of what you do, is not what you do in the regular season. They have made some roster moves lately, so it will be a little bit of a feeling out situation as we try to figure out the philosophy on both offense and defense. We think we have a good idea, but it’s always tough to do that.”

                                (On S Jason Sehorn)
“We brought Jason in to see where he was with his foot. After his second surgery, it hadn’t healed as well as we hoped, in which he might have considered coming back.”

                                (On trading RB Lamar Gordon)
“We did trade Lamar Gordon this morning to the Miami Dolphins. It’s all based on if he passed the physical down there, but I would assume he passed. I think Lamar is a terrific value. He’s a terrific back. This is a situation for him to go down there and become the starter. We do have three backs who have played well. Within the mix and getting all four players active, Arlen (Harris) has such a significant role on our special teams, Steven (Jackson) has done a terrific job, so this was an opportunity, value wise, that we couldn’t pass up. We talked to him this morning and he was excited about the opportunity. He feels great. The reason we gave him the ball 22 times (against Oakland), in the period of two quarters was that we needed to know if he was ready to go for us this year. Obviously, other people were watching too. I thought he was terrific in the game. We miss him. I think he is a terrific talent. It always makes you nervous when you have a talent like that move on, but none the less, I’m excited for him too. I think he will do very well.”

(On if trading Gordon was a vote of confidence in Steven Jackson)
“There is no question about that. I guess that would be the most obvious statement about the trade. We feel like Steven, at this point, is ready to play. We feel really good, also, about Arlen Harris. And the camp that Marshall (Faulk) has had, he has been outstanding in camp. We feel like all three guys are ready to go. It’s a little risky, but we feel like it was the right thing to do.”

                                (On the final preseason game)
“You don’t want to say you want to get it over with. I just think we are more anxious to get the regular season started and start making the games count. It’s just a lot more incentive for the practice, and I think we’re ready to go.”

                                (On injuries during preseason games)
“I think before and after (the games) you think about (injuries) a lot. But during the game you can’t think about that. It’s something that weighs on your mind, but hopefully we’ll come out of it injury-free.”

(On if he feels like he needs to get a lot of work against the Raiders)
“It’s always the coach’s call. If he thinks I need more work, I’ll do it. But typically the starters don’t play too much.”

(On if he is close to where he wants to be heading into the regular season)
“I think we all are. If we needed to play a regular season game this week, we could. You try not to have a different mindset for a preseason game, but there is more of a sense of urgency in the regular season.”

(On what part of his game he wants to improve on)
“Everything. I’m always trying to get better, although it might not look like it all the time. I have a lot to learn. I’ll make mistakes throughout the year. I have to keep getting better, and if I can cut down on my mistakes and keep moving forward, I’ll be fine.”

(On if the offense is where it needs to be)
“We have a little ways to go. Last week was a good example of what we can do when we are running on all cylinders. If we can avoid the peaks and valleys, and keep moving forward we’ll get to that point. We are not there yet, but we are working on getting there.”

(On getting momentum going into the regular season)
“Last week was definitely a different feeling coming to practice (after a win). You just have that momentum. A win would be nice (vs. Oakland), but it’s not the end of the world if we don’t. For the younger guys, and even for us older guys, it’s nice to have that feeling going into the regular season.”

(On if the offense can be better than last year)
“Sure, it’s just another year. Steven (Jackson) hasn’t had a lot of experience in this offense, but with Shaun (McDonald) and Kevin (Curtis) having another year (of experience), and even with Dane (Looker) and Mike (Furrey), they’ve been in (the offense) only one or two years. That experience helps in a complex offense like this, and with this line getting to work together every week is helping too.”

                                (On T Orlando Pace)

and there you have it , QUENTIN CULBERSON , a rookie who could be a long term member of the rams . everyone loves this kid , he is putting in his time and will be a solid member of this team . some people are crying LB in the draft for the very early rounds , when the rams actually have some young solid guy's in the wings in CULBERSON and MCGARIGLE . i think that quentins play early this year and preseason shows that he is a young hungry player . i see him as someone who could be getting a lot of playing time next year .

                                (Opening comments on injuries)
“CB Travis Fisher, obviously, (will get) surgery, with a plate in the bone. No one completely knows when we will be getting him back. We could be very optimistic and say eight to 10 weeks, or you can be pessimistic and say three to four months. Nobody really knows, so there is no sense in putting a time on it. When he’s back, he’s back. It’s very unfortunate. He was having a heck of a game. We were very excited about his play. He had about 15 plays. It was just a freak accident. QB Marc Bulger injured his knee in the first series. He’s getting an MRI as we speak. LB Tommy Polley has a shoulder injury, a rotator cuff. And then DT Tyoka Jackson had an injury to his shoulder. Everyone else came out clean, so the significant one is losing Travis. He’s a terrific corner and it will be hard to replace him. It just gives someone else an opportunity, like CB DeJuan Groce or CB Kevin Garrett, to step in there and take charge. That’s what they are here for. They get paid for this opportunity. They need to make the most of it, and I’m sure they will.”

(On positives seen during the game)
“A couple of good things, DT Brian Howard and Tyoka (Jackson) were terrific in that game. All three linebackers, (Brandon) Chillar, Pisa (Tinoisamoa), and Robert Thomas, I thought played very well. I think that RB Marshall (Faulk) and Steven Jackson play exceptionally well. I was very excited watching the tape. Marshall’s burst and his speed. Obviously we have some things going for us on the offensive line. We had T Grant (Williams) trying to play for us on a bad wheel, and some other things that you guys well know. So we didn’t want to leave (Faulk) in there too long. But he did get 13 snaps in there. He had a chance to carry the ball, catch a pass, then get him out of the game. Steven, I thought, really picked it up. I was very pleased with his effort. He ran hard and he was very impressive with his change of direction. Some of the jump cuts that only smaller backs seem capable of doing, he demonstrated a couple of those during the game. He lowered his shoulder and ran through a couple of tacklers. I was very excited and pleased with how he ran the ball and just his skills. He did make some mental errors that did cost us on key third downs, and of course that needs to get cleaned up. The offensive line, (G Adam) Timmerman has a shoulder (injury), and probably won’t practice this week and we’ll see how he is for the game. We have some problems with the offensive line that will not get resolved in the next day or two. It’s going to take some time. Tommy (Nütten) needs to come back. We need to get G Chris Dishman in shape. He did play much better than I thought he would at this point, but we still have a ways to go on the offensive line. On a more positive note, G Scott Tercero continued to play terrific. He was outstanding again. So...

He is still young and he is a pro bowl OLB, he would be a HUGE up grade over chillar and watching him play he is a serious ball hawk, i kno most of you are worried about the DL but all the teams are tagging the defensive line stars (smith, grant etc,) we can draft some talent on the DL and do something big with our LB corps now, What do you guys think?
