  • The challenge by martz on the jackson fumble

Even by martz's standards, the challenge by martz on the jackson fumble was quite bizzare. Wonder what he was thinking? Maybe the challenge pertained to the potential recovery by mccollom.

Listening to the radio broadcast, I think the ref said we were challenging if Jackson was down by contact, which doesn't sound like what we wanted to challenge at all.

Thats what they said on TV as well nick, but a blind man could see that it was a fumble and he was not down.

Is it possible that the refs just misunderstood what was being challenged?

i guess its possible nick, but before the challenge the refs went over to talk to martz, so it was especially odd.

Yeah, good point. Perhaps we'll hear more about it in the next day or so.

I agree GC it looked like an obvious fumble, even before I saw the replay.

I think it was for Steven Jackson's psyche.

That's what I was hoping. I could see the refs being confused about which "fumble" was being challenged and misspeak when trying to explain it. It certainly looked like Wilson lost control when McCollum leveled him. I'd like to give sMartz the benefit of the doubt that he saw that also on the Jumbotron and that was what he was challenging ... because otherwise ...

One thing about Martz and his stupid challenges, he tends to listen to the players. If they say they didn't fumble, or they were down before it happened he seems to react and go with what they said.

Maybe we need to start looking at the players not crying wolf then always looking at Martz. Martz's style has always been for the players and seems to work fairly well.

From Martz's press conference that I'm listening to now, he challenged the play due to the fact he thought McCollum had the ball.

Actually TX, he misunderstood what his players were telling him. One player said he clearly had the ball. Martz thought he meant Steven Jackson, but the player meant McCollum. Doesn't matter now the game is over, RAMS won!!!

Do you think this is a posibility with the "awesome" and "competent" officiating the RAMS always seem to get???? ;)

He was on his back and thought that was enough. One of the players, I won't tell you who, said 'He clearly had the ball, it's our ball, challenge it.' I thought he was talking about the running back. So that's what I challenged. The official did a nice job, (saying) 'Are you sure that's what you want?' Bad information. I screwed up."
Well there you have it. My gut reaction is that I have mixed emotions. On one hand, you have to trust your players to do the right thing and show support for them when they are adamant. On the other, you need to be clear and quick in processing information and he should have got clarified what the players were talking about ... he had time to throw a few questions out about what happened before throwing the red flag.
