  • Met Henry Ellard today

Had the day off and went to the Jets training camp in Florham Park, NJ today, about an hour from my house. Through a friend, I got on the field at the end of the practice session to shake hands with Henry Ellard, who is the Jets receivers coach. He signed an authentic "Ellard" jersey I brought and posed for a picture. Very nice, low key guy, and I talked to him privately for about 5 minutes.

With years of Jerry Rice and SF dominance, Ellard was grossly overlooked and very underrated as a receiver.

Sounds like it was a good encounter. I agree that Ellard is very underrated.

Don't forget to post the picture!

I stayed at the Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore over the weekend and the Jets were staying there as well for their Monday night game with the Ravens. I say many of the players but never got to see Ellard. I heard he was a great guy! I was bummed I never got to meet him.

I don't know that he was all that unknown and underrated in his heyday .. I know he helped me big time the year I won 1st place in my fantasy league. Henry ran crisp routes and was seldom caught from behind - he could really fly in his prime. Your'e right about him being a low key guy. I had the opportunity to chat with him briefly last year in St Louis just before the Giants game. I remember asking him if he was going to suit up to help us out, and his reply was: "Man if I've got to suit up we're really in trouble!" Always the gentleman Henry .. I don't know how old he is now, but he looked still to be in excellent shape .. Henry will always be one of my favorite Rams ..

I didn't know there was fantasy football back then?

Ellard was my favorite football player growing up in the 80's, I would love to meet him.

According to his bio, he's 48 now. Still in good shape. In fact, as I was leaving the Jets training complex, he was running laps around the facility.

A funny moment that I neglected to mention- Jets Coach Rex Ryan facetiously yelled across the field during drills that Henry was "the best receiver on the roster"! It drew some spirited laughs from the crowd.

I had both Eric Dickerson and Henry Ellard in 1988, although by then Eric had jumped ship to Indy. Drafted Ellard again in 89 and he did me well for yet another season. I also had Dickerson earlier (1984 the year our league was started) when he was still a Ram. I don't know how long Fantasy Football has been in existence, but my friend (Steve) who started up a league here on Maui was fresh from Vegas at the time where he had worked at one of the big Casinos. No one had ever heard of FF before here on Maui, and for the first couple of years it was the only league on the island. There were I think 8 or 10 "team owners" in the first year we played, and only one guy had access to a computer. We were kind of sore about it at first as the rest of us had to rely on newspapers and sportscenter. Turned out not to matter as he never finished in the money .. Fun times back then ...

I love Henry Ellard. He was VERY underrated!

If he played in NY or SF he would be more well known.

                      Henry Ellard HOF Petition

I don't know how many here were on the Rampager's Listserv back in the 90s, but a respected member of that forum has created a petition to get Henry Ellard some HOF recognition. If you think this is en effort worthy of your time, please take a few moments to make your 'voice' heard. Below is what Bob 'Deacon' Dover posted in a FB forum, edited to remove the link.

Circus came to town but it was the Rams that provided the weird quirky and some what sad entertainment

Great opening drive by the Rams
Pettis made a highlight reel catch on opening drive to keep the drive alive
Jenkins defended a few passes early to stall the Jets
SJ 39 was in beast mode
CLong showed up early to record two sacks

That is all i have (positive) today....

A strange game that has frustrated many Ram fans but we are a young team that will continue to have some pretty severe growing pains like today

So, I made a lot of new friends today...
                      by GolfnRAMFAN
I went to the local sports bar today to watch the game today, and really wanted it to at least be close, because there is always a group of very loud, obnoxious Jets fans that are always there. I was wanting to maybe rub something in their face, but that obviously didn't happen. I wore my Rams Jersey there with my friend, she had her Farr jersey on and I had my Bulger Jersey on, and as the day went on, I think almost everybody in the bar came over and said, "I'm sorry" or "what happened" or "you all are true fans for sticking it out." As I heard this i replied in the nicest way I could, and learned a lot from what just came out of my mouth. I kept saying that it was okay, because at least we have had some good years, and good years come with bad years. I learned that I really am just grateful to be able to watch the Rams no matter how bad they are, and I really am thankful to have been able to see a Championship. Lots of fans are rarely able to see one and I was able to see one when I was 9. I hope everybody here is able to realize that good years do come with bad and vise versa. So lets just hope that those good years are just around the corner! Go Rams!

Oh, and about the game, let me just say that I think we should take Trent Green out when he is on the goal line, no matter how good of a game he is having. I told my friend I was nervous with him down there, thinking back to last years disaster against Seattle, and sure enough, throws a pick. :|
