Rams vs. Chiefs: 5 things to watch
    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    09/03/2009

The battle for the No. 3 quarterback job remains too close to call. Brock Berlin has better overall numbers this preseason. But Null has engineered one fourth-quarter rally and came close to another. The results in Cincinnati were inconclusive, with neither QB doing much. Will there be a knockout punch delivered tonight?

Tuesday's roster moves left eight wide receivers still standing; only five or six figure to make the final roster. Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson and Keenan Burton look like sure things. What if the Rams keep only five WRs? That means either Tim Carter, Ronald Curry, or Derek Stanley could be unemployed by Saturday afternoon.

Teams traditionally keep four defensive tackles. The Rams have five bona fide roster candidates in Adam Carriker, Gary Gibson, Clifton Ryan, Darell Scott and Hollis Thomas. Who's the odd man out? And should 2007 first-round pick Carriker, who's on the second-team defense coming off an ankle injury, be worried?

A minor injury to Alex Barron put No. 2 overall draft pick Jason Smith in the starting lineup at RT against Atlanta. He was back on the second unit against Cincinnati, but a minor injury to Richie Incognito is expected to put Smith back in the starting lineup tonight. A solid outing against Kansas City could seal the deal for him as a starter.

Despite missed tackles and penalties, is David Roach still in the backup safety picture with Craig Dahl and Todd Johnson? Has CB Quincy Butler shown enough to make the final roster? Will the Rams keep four OTs — if so, will it be Phil Trautwein or Renardo Foster? DEs Eric Moore and C.J. Ah You have had impressive preseasons.

Why does Thomas continue to pound the "Carriker is on the bubble" drum?? It's rediculous. He should know as far as this year, Carriker has absolutely nothing to worry about.

And what's wrong with keeping a 5th? If we have 5 "bona-fide" DTs, why not keep all of them knowing how Spags rotates the line?

If you ask me, a team should have 10 linemen on each side of the ball. 4 OT, 4 OG, 2 C, 5 DE and 5 DT.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I don't know. I have a tendency to think when it comes from Jim Thomas, there's smoke and where there is smoke there is usually fire. Anyone else, wouldn't think about it. Coming from him, someone tipped him to something and he's keeping his source private.

Not that I haven't been wrong before, but I'd be shocked to see Carriker cut.

I think Thomas would be cut before Carriker but it wouldn't shock me in the least to see Gibson starting in front of Carriker in Seattle.

I can see Carriker having to compete for a starting position, but not a roster spot.

Thomas has been making comments about Carriker's future with the team for a few days now, yet I haven't seen anyone else make these assumptions. If he did indeed "hear" something, wouldn't other writers have picked up on it. Wouldn't it be a bigger story?

He's the main beat writer for the Rams. He probably gets nuggets that others don't. Who knows, with the baseball Cardinals so hot right now he could be just fanning a fire to get interest in the Rams.

you know what this means....i could turn on the screen on sundays and hear the commentator say..."Ah You is getting deep penetration in the backfield.." now i know we cant be picky, seeing as we follow a team whose gone 5-27 over the last 2 seasons...but im not sure if i wanna hear that ...on a sunday too of all days..

Carriker isn't worried. He's just got to work his way into the starting line up. Which doesn't bother me because we rotate defensive players around anyways.
