    Re: The Official 53-man Roster

I don't think few of these guys will be on the roster when the Seahawks come around. There are already a bunch of interesting names on the waiver wire especially at QB where John David Booty and Brian Brohm are 2 college stars with experience in the WCO. Are they an upgrade over Null? Maybe. Reggie Brown is also a name to watch considering we cut the 2 vets Carter and Curry I think we will look to add some sort of experience. One position I think we will most definately add a guy is RB.

IMO Nate Jones, Hollis Thomas, Erick Young, Quinton Culberson, and Kenneth Darby all still on the bubble.

Not filled with big names. That's going to take some getting used to.

I still think that this is a good first step in rebuilding.

I personally love the look of this roster. I don't see the apparent need to add a DT that some do. Hollis is a monster run stuffer, let the other young guys learn ...

5 WR's is enough here. Should the injury bug bite, Tim Carter and Ronald Curry will likely be waiting ...

No way Darby is on the bubble, but they are going to have to add another RB, probably at the expense of a linebacker ...

I love keeping Nate Jones, who is a big, talented young wide receiver ...

Very surprised that Roach made the roster ....

I find it interesting that Roy Scheuning was waived and I don't see it being discussed anywhere else. Spagnuolo is really cleaning house. It seems like most players drafted during the Linehan regime (with the exception of Long, Burton, Culberson and Avery) have been cut or traded. It says a lot about both the difference in the discrepancy in talent evaluation between Linehan and Spagnuolo and the way Spagnuolo seems intent on building from the ground up.

I, for one, really like it. It has a very grass roots, organic feel and I think that given time (and for the purposes of this metaphor, fertilizer) we could become a successful unit.

I thought Linehan added a ton of fertilizer (manure) to the roster. I think Spags is removing some of that fertilizer.

I had a feeling Roger Allen III would replace Scheuning. Allen was one of the top UDFAs to hit the market. He's a big guy and known as a run blocker - probably fits the system more than Scheuning did.

Interesting that two draft picks were cut - Brooks Foster (5th) and Ogbonnaya (7th).

Keeping David Roach is a mystery to me. I preferred Todd Johnson over him. Roach badly missed some tackles in the preseason. Maybe the coaching staff sees some potential on special teams.

Foster is on IR, not cut
Ogbonnaya was a 7th rounder so thats not surprising, especially with our need of back up RB and him not showing much in preseason

he will likely be on the practice squad

I'm surprised Schuening was let go. Steven Jackson actually wanted to get him drafted to the Rams, as he was supposedly a good run blocker that he wanted to be blocking for him.

Also surprised Curry was let go, as he had a pretty good pre-season. I know Spagnuolo wants to build this team his way with his people, but you still should need at least one vet wide receiver to show the young guys tricks and tips. Hmm.

I think Hollis Thomas may be serviceable for us for a year or two, but we have to start looking for a younger, taller, stronger, more athletic NT. Most likely in this year's draft.

Thomas and Darby didn't impress me at all during the preseason, IMO we should definately be looking for an RB and maybe a DT

Rams Roster, Last Day: How do you count to 53?

                                :ram: Alright...

First Friday in September. Final day for the big roster trimming -- a very difficult task, especially when the numbers are dwindling to only ten or seven players left to select. We've already discussed some names for the 2009 team ... but now ...

How do YOU count to 53? ;)

Without elaborating as to 'why' for now (you can of course), my tentative, incomplete guess / wish list follows:

                                OFFENSE (26)
QB -- Marc Bulger; Kyle Boller; Brock Berlin

LB -- Quinton Culberson; Larry Grant; James Laurinaitis; Will Witherspoon; David Vobora // K.C. Asiodu [...you go, Ekenemchukwu!]
CB -- Ron Bartell; Quincy Butler; Justin King; Jonathan Wade
S -- Atogwe, Oshiomogho; James Butler; Todd Johnson; David Roach

                                SPECIAL T (3)

                                K -- Josh Brown
                                P -- Donnie Jones

                                PRACTICE SQUAD

                                Mark Rubin, SS

                                Breaking down the Rams roster
                                Thursday, Jul. 30 2009

                                QUARTERBACK
Unless sixth-rounder Keith Null upends Brock Berlin for the No. 3 job, the
pecking order is set, with Marc Bulger the starter and Kyle Boller the backup.

In Camp (4): Bulger, Boller, Berlin, Null

                                RUNNING BACK

Who's No. 2? Kenneth Darby appears to have the edge over Antonio Pittman
entering camp. But Samkon Gado and Chris Ogbonnaya could change that with
                                strong preaseasons.

In Camp (5): Darby, Gado, Steven Jackson, Ogbonnaya, Pittman

                                TIGHT END/FULLBACK

Randy McMichael's the starter, and Billy Bajema's the blocking specialist at
TE. Joe Klopfenstein could be the odd man out if Daniel Fells continues his
                                strong play from the spring.

In Camp (7): Bajema (TE), Eric Butler (TE), Fells (TE), Jerome Johnson (FB),
Mike Karney (FB), Klopfenstein (TE), McMichael (TE)

                                WIDE RECEIVER

Nothing is set in stone other than Donnie Avery as the No. 1 wideout. Keenan
Burton, Tim Carter, Ronald Curry, fifth-round draft pick Brooks Foster, Laurent
Robinson and Derek Stanley will battle for playing time and roster spots among
the four or five other jobs on the final roster.

In Camp (10): Avery, Burton, Jarrett Byers, Carter, Curry, Foster, Nate Jones,
                                Robinson, Stanley, Sean Walker

                                OFFENSIVE LINE

The likely starting five is (from left) Alex Barron and Jason Smith at tackle,
Jacob Bell and Richie Incognito at guard, and Jason Brown at center. But who
else makes the final roster beyond Adam Goldberg and John Greco?

In Camp (15): Roger Allen (G), Barron (T), Bell (G), Brown (C), Renardo Foster
                                (T), Goldberg (T/G), Greco (G), Incognito (G), Tim Mattran (C), Daniel Sanders
                                (C), Roy Schuening (G), Mark Setterstrom (G/C), Smith (T), Phil Trautwein (T),
                                Eric Young (T)

                                DEFENSIVE LINE

Not much suspense here. If eight D-linemen make the final roster come
September, it looks like only the backup tackle spots are truly up for grabs.

In Camp (13): Victor Adeyanju (DE), C. J. Ah You (DE), Antwon Burton (DT), Ian
Campbell (DE), Adam Carriker (DT), Gary Gibson (DT), James Hall (DE), Leonard
Little (DE), Chris Long (DE), Eric Moore (DE), Clifton Ryan (DT), Darell Scott
                                (DT), Hollis Thomas (DT)

                                LINEBACKER

Other than wide receiver, the starting strongside LB job could be the most
hotly contested battle in camp. Chris Draft, Quinton Culberson, Larry Grant and
                                David Vobora are all candidates.

In Camp (9): K.C. Asiodu, Chris Chamberlain, Culberson, Dominic Douglas, Draft,
Grant, James Laurinaitis, Vobora, Will Witherspoon...

                                • Alex Barron, LT - His spree of drive killing penalties comes to an end.
                                • Kyle Boller, QB - Showed us just why he's no longer a Raven.
                                • Randy McMichael, TE - Hasn't played at the level he did in Miami.
                                • Leonard Little, LE - If he's willing to stay for a small contract he gets re-signed, otherwise he goes.
                                • Marc Bulger, QB - His days as a Ram are over, as both parties need a fresh start.
                                • Samkon Gado, RB - Really struggled this season and an upgrade is needed.
                                • Kenneth Darby, RB - Another backup RB who was innefective.

                                Resign

                                • Jason Campbell, QB, Washington - He still has potential and needs a fresh start. If all else fails, he's a stop gap QB.
                                • Ray Edwards, LE, Minnesota - A solid DE who would immediately help with our pass rush woes.
                                • Jerious Norwood, RB, Atlanta - A speed back who would be a great change of pace for Jackson, and would also lessen his work load.

                                • 3) Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan - Has a good arm and great mobility. Will take a few years to transition game to the NFL level, but has great potential.

Does anybody have a Rams roster from Linehans last year (the team spags took over) and a list of the now current roster to match them up with. I know Nick posted the Rams current roser in another thread recently.

The point being I think the direction of this team from what spags inherited is 10 fold what it was and am very pleased with what D/Spags have done.
