I'm of the opinion that one simple adjustment on defense would have an immediate impact on our team. One that could and should be implemented this Sunday and perhaps for the rest of the season. I think we need to begin blitzing aggressively! I think that would get our defense fired up again where they need to be. We all know we need to start tackling better, quit the stupid penalties and do something different on special teams. But, those aren't easily corrected. You never know if you have those corrected until you are actually in the game...no matter how much you work on it. But, blitzing aggressively is something you can do NOW that hopefully could have an immediate impact. Any thoughts on that? Anyone...anyone?

Thus far, the Rams have hired a new coaching staff, have acquired new starters at C, FB and SS, and have turned other roles over to younger players.
It can be assumed that the Rams will likely acquire at least two additional starters in the draft.
My question is, if the goal is to show substantial improvement, which I will define (for the purposes of this thread) as winning 7-9 games in 2009...
Will it be enough?-

QB Marc Bulger
(On preparing for the San Francisco game)
“I think with them starting out the way they have, and obviously with our record, it’s almost a must-win game. We had two good games last year, overtime here, then they got us pretty good out there. But it’s always a good game between these two organizations, and being a division game, it’s pretty important.”
(On playing at San Francisco)
“Last week, the way they got beat in Seattle, that’s not indicative of how good of a team they have. Just from watching some of their defense, they move around pretty well, and they have some incredible guys over there. It’s going to be a tough challenge this week.”
(On the Rams’ offensive style)
“I think everyone would like to see us run the ball more, the players, and I’m sure Coach Martz too. But what I think what he meant was, if the pass is all that is going for us, than that’s what we are going to stick with. Whatever it takes to win, whether we run it every down, or pass it every down, as long as we win that’s all we care about in here. I think that’s the point that he’s trying to convey.”
(On if the team is in panic mode)
“We are not in a panic. We know there is urgency in the situation we are in. I know how upset the fans get, and how upset everyone gets, but nobody wants to win more than us. The problem with that is if we dwell on the loss Sunday too much, then we won’t be prepared for San Francisco. We know they are getting ready right now, and if we are still worrying about last Sunday, then we will be in for a long game this Sunday. We made our corrections. You hate to say you had to move on, but you have to move on.”
(On if he has a good read on the ***** defense)
“They do a lot of coverages, and have a lot of different fronts. We played against pretty much all of those guys last year, so personnel-wise, we know them.”
(On if their defense is different now that Jim Mora is not the defensive coordinator)
“They do a lot of zone blitzing. (Mora) was probably a little more aggressive. That was just his style. They will still dial it up, and we will have to be prepared for a lot of things. Every week, some things you prepare for they don’t do, and some things you didn’t think they would do, they do. So we are just preparing for everything.”
DE Leonard Little
(On the defense not having a turnover)
“That’s the way it is sometimes. It will turn around for us. We’ll start to get some turnovers and get our offense on the field a little more. We started 1-2 last year and people put us in the same position last year at this time, so we just need to come out and play our game.”
(On if the defense hasn’t been as aggressive as last year)
“No, we just made some mental mistakes. It’s not like people...-

by r8rh8rmikeSay what you want about the defense, but through the first three preseason games, they look to me like a hard hitting, aggresive, opportunistic group that can take the ball away from opposing offenses. Multiple turnovers in all three games for a total of nine, I'm really hoping this trend can translate to the regular season because turnovers are game changers.
Now if we can only get that tackling thing down.....-

by Richbert88Specifically if they keep doing well and Has is retained as HC, what will this teams identity <what people think of> be.
I recall those Saints teams with blistering linebackers. We all know the GSOT. What is this team going to be?
My guess ...... punch you in the mouth power running game matched with a punch you in the mouth defense <eventually>. Throw in the keep you honest deep passing game.

by sbramfanPicture if you only saw 1 quarter of this game. Depending on which quarter it was, you would have an entirely different perspective of this team. There were some great moments, and some...well, other moments.
But I think we're all trying to put a finger on this teams identity and it hasn't fully found itself yet. Some are touting the play of the D. Others are looking at the fact that we squeeked by some below average teams.
I think the only thing we know, is that this team has twice now found a way to win a close game. That is something to build on. Also, they are 2-1 and although we would prefer 3-0, I think we would all take this if offered at the beginning of the year. (just might have thought it would have been the Cards stealing one at home.) Either way, 1-1 in the division.
Looks like Barron will begin to take over the RT, and apparently we are more concerned about the offense than the defense right now. Again, I think I would take that if you offered it at the beginning of the year.
Playing well vs. the run is a good thing. I don't see facing a better team "exposing" anything there...just perhaps move a down a few notches in our run defense ranking.
I think this team is now getting into regular season form (which wasn't the case in game 1) and can start to show it's identity.
Let's hope it's a run stuffing, opportunistic defense, with an explosive offense and a special teams that is not below average.-
