  • One of the biggest problems this year? The Off playcalling.

I've been just amazed by the offensive play calling this year. We are way too conservative at times. I know there are times to play it safe, but it feels like we are playing it too safe too often.

We've got a problem with not having enough player talent. But, I think we also have a problem with lack of play calling talent in the booth.
The Rams... Where dreams go to die.

We are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too conservative. It's almost gut wrenching in how bad we are.

I really don't think this has to do with talent as much as playcalling. Yes, the offensive line isn't giving our QB's too much time. But, when we have time to throw, we don't look down field. We look right or left, or five yards from the line of scrimmage.

Avery has great speed. He showed that last year, there is no way he lost all of it. Let's throw down the field on first down when they stack the box for Jackson.

I just can't understand the play calling either. How can you keep calling draw plays on third and long and think you will once catch the defense. I don't know if it is Shurmur calling the plays but whoever it is is a freaking idiot. I mean I am all for giving Jackson 25-30 touches a game but call a play thats right for the situation.

Rookie DC, rookie HC, Rookie OC. Bad combo with a young team not enough experience all around. With a defensive coach you can go with the guy like Flajole and it has worked out well. Shurmur comes from a good organization, but he is still to young and inexperienced. I've said this before and I'll say it again we need a proven vet offensive coordinator so Spags can be the defensive boss and dial up his blitz

I copied and pasted the NFL.com play-by-play slightly formatted and color-coated.

          Pink = Penalties
          Blue = Positive Run Play
Orange = 0 or Negative Run Play
          Green = Positive Pass play
Red = 0 or negative Pass Play
          Cyan = Sack
          Dark Red = Turnover/Defense TD

Re: One of the biggest problems this year? The Off playcalling.

This is our second series, and this was the play call that astounded me the most in the whole game:

            St. Louis Rams at 10:35
            1-10-STL 20 (10:35) 39-S.Jackson right tackle to SL 25 for 5 yards (32-M.Lewis; 90-I.Sopoaga).
            2-5-STL 25 (10:01) 39-S.Jackson left end to SL 26 for 1 yard (52-P.Willis). PENALTY on SL-46-D.Fells, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at SL 25 - No Play.
2-15-STL 15 (9:39) PENALTY on SL, Illegal Substitution, 5 yards, enforced at SL 15 - No Play.
            2-20-STL 10 (9:22) 39-S.Jackson up the middle to SL 16 for 6 yards (52-P.Willis).
            3-14-STL 16 (8:44) 12-K.Boller pass short right to 17-D.Avery to SL 38 for 22 yards (38-D.Goldson). Caught at SL 22.
            1-10-STL 38 (8:12) 39-S.Jackson left guard to SL 42 for 4 yards (92-A.Franklin; 51-T.Spikes).
            2-6-STL 42 (7:37) 12-K.Boller pass short right to 46-D.Fells to SF 41 for 17 yards (32-M.Lewis). Caught at SL 47.
            1-10-SF 41 (7:15) 39-S.Jackson right tackle to SF 37 for 4 yards (22-N.Clements).
            2-6-SF 37 (6:34) 12-K.Boller pass short right to 39-S.Jackson pushed ob at SF 32 for 5 yards (51-T.Spikes). Caught at SF 40.
            3-1-SF 32 (6:05) 35-S.Gado right guard to SF 33 for -1 yards (55-A.Brooks).
            4-2-SF 33 (5:22) 3-Josh.Brown 51 yard field goal is No Good, Short, Center-45-C.Massey, Holder-5-D.Jones.

So you have a big bruising running back like Steven Jackson, but you take him out of the game on 3rd and 1 in Niner territory and give the ball to Samkon Gado, a guy who has barely been on the field all year? Terrible play call.

And the little dump passes to Mike Karney? What's with that? Karney was brought in here to block for Jackson, and maybe sometimes run up the middle like a battering ram. This guy doesn't have the speed or the moves to make defenders miss like that.

                Moronic.

And the draw plays when you get to like 2nd and 20 or 3rd and 15?! What's with that? To gain a lot of yards back, you have to go with the passing game...

I think the play calling is astonishingly bad, but I also think some of the fault goes to our QB's. Let's face it, this is the MO that Boller has had in his time in the NFL. The 16/35 120 yard 0TD, 1 INT stat lines aren't exactly new to Boller. He's so afraid of making mistakes that he takes the easy dump offs 90% of the time. It seems that Bulger has also started that habit because of substandard pass protection.

While I agree that the offense has lacked any kind of imagination, there is more than one option for the QB to pass to on any given play. Ours are just taking the easy & quick ones.

Ive seen no reason to dump Jason Brown, he always looks solid in his blocks
Josh Brown hasnt been doing it this year, but then i cant remember him having many chances to kick

Embarrassing. My blind neighbor can call better plays than this...

Rather surprising call to me. The box was loaded. Everyone in the stadium knew it was coming. And the Rams don't even have their best option in the game.

                        Head scratcher indeed.

Yea, and in order to successfully do a draw, you need to have established the passing game... It seemed as if he was just randomly picking plays.

The play calling is horrendous, but a reflection of the complete lack of talent we have on the offensive side of the ball. The line stinks and doesn't protect. Our receivers are not a deep threat and can't get separation, thus we don't take chances downfield. The quarterbacks are skittish. On third and long, it's obvious the coaches have little faith in all of the above, so they run meaningless draws and high percentage dumpoffs designed to get nothing.

You saw what happened when the Rams tried to get cute with the end around- gimmickry isn't the answer either.

The Rams approach won't waiver all season: rely on the defense to keep it close and respectable and hope like hell the offense can avoid turnovers while playing it close to the vest. Until we get some playmakers, it won't change.

First of all great win I'm pumped!
IMO Shurmur called a great game today. One of his best ever
The only problem with our offense was the line. They couldn't get even an inch of push on the line. That's embarassing
The passing game really stepped it up and executed most of Shurmurs calls effectively.
It infuriates me to get on here and see people bashing Shurmurs playcalling that really was quite good. If the o line run blocks we run away with this game
With that said let's go beat the hawks and prepare for the playoffs

Im sure when you read this title, you'd know what it's about. One man and one man only... Pat Shurmur.

His offensive play calling has been absolutely horrific and makes me want to vomit... I don't care about our lack of receivers, our crappy team, and blah blah blah..... Would you take a shot for once?

Our team is the biggest laughing stock in the NFL and will be for a while if we keep playing the way we are... I mean not only is Sam getting killed but Steven is aswell and same as the rest of our team.

Would it be possible for the Rams to fire Shurmur right now and get somebody else? Or would that not work because players need time to adjust to the playbook and all....right? (Well not Mark Clayton )

I think I'd honestly do a better job as OC than Shurmur

                              My Case For Pat Shurmur
                              by AvengerRam_old
I've read here (and elsewhere) posts calling for the firing of Rams Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur. I am 100% against that idea.

You have to look at this with two starting premises:

                              1) The Rams don't have an overabundance of talent on offense; and
                              2) It often takes time for players to adjust to a new offensive system before it starts producing results.

Given, those two facts, I think that, rather than looking at the Rams' statistical ranking or, worse yet, hindsight criticisms of specific instances of playcalling, we should ask a simple question:

Has this offense improved over the course of the year?

                              The answer is "yes."

Here are the Rams' offensive stats for the first 5 games of the season vs. games 6 through 10 (based on per game averages):

                              Category/Games 1-5/Games 6-10

                              Rushing Yards: 113.8 124.8 (+11.0)
                              Passing Yards: 167.2 204.0 (+36.8)
                              Total Yards: 281.0 328.8 (+47.8)
                              Points: 6.8 14.4 (+7.8)

Shurmur is a well-respected coach. In fact, in a recent article, Don Banks suggested that he could (despite the Rams' troubles) get some consideration for HC vacancies this year. The Rams should give him time to develop his system and build and offense with players that fit his schemes. There simply is no reason to start over with yet another OC based upon what has transpired this year.

Get that? The guy just didn't know whether to wear some men's or women's underwear. So he put on the panties for this game just in case. Poor job from everyone. It lays on his shoulders because the play calling was flat out gutless.

Lack of Offensive Talent is No Excuse for Poor Playcalling

                              "Its the playcalling!"

"No, its the lack of skill players!"

                              "No, its the playcalling!"

"No, its the lack of offensive talent."

Wait a minute... maybe both are right.

Nobody would argue that the Rams have an abundance of talent at the skill postions. Steven Jackson is an "A" list player. Sam Bradford may very well be one in a year or two, but he's not there yet. Mark Clayton is a solid "B." Beyond that, let's be honest... its a bunch of B-/C+ players, at best.

So that excuses the vanilla playcalling, right?

                              Absolutely not!

Let's take a look at the most creative example of playcalling in recent years... the Wildcat. It was put into place by the Miami Dolphins during a time when they too had very little offensive talent. And, guess what... it worked!

I'm not saying the Rams should use the Wildcat (which defenses have caught up with two years later, making it little more than a gimmick). But what the Dolphins demonstrated is that creativity is EXACTLY WHAT IS NEEDED when a team does not have great offensive talent.

Heck, if the Rams had Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald and Dallas Clark (along with SJ), it wouldn't matter what offense they ran. They could have a 10 play playbook and still move the ball.

When you don't have the ability to continually win one-on-one matchups, a bit of trickery... some misdirection... some unpredictablity.... that's what keeps the defense off balance.

Fritz Shurmer needs to reach into his bag of tricks (if he has one) and find a way to surprise opposing defenses. If he doesn't, he probably won't be around long enough to see the Rams get an influx of offensive talent.
