  • ESPN report on Alex Barron

Rams LT Alex Barron has been the most penalized player in the league this season.

He's actually tied with Bills LT Demetrius Bell with 10 penalties, but Barron's 10 have cost the Rams 50 yards. Bell's have only cost Buffalo 32. Barron has always been a false start machine, which won't help his stock on the 2010 free agent market. He was also benched for a game in early October.

No way around it, this is a sign of his lack of disipline and being overmatched by many rushing ends. With us not having a chance at the playoffs, this is something that must be monitored for the remainder of the year. If he can't turn it around we can't offer him alot of money to stay.

Penalties or not I don't see a reason to keep him when we have Smith and Goldberg can be more than Solid at RT.

I don't see why we need to keep him around. In fact, I was mad we didn't trade him away! We traded Witherspoon for a fifth rounder....

Yeah, it seems to be leaning toward moving smith over to LT and drafting a OG.

This would let Barron go and get ready for next year

Hmm. Devaney said he wanted to stockpile picks for this year's draft. So far, we only have 2 extra picks, a 5th and 7th rounder. I assumed he would trade Barron before the trade deadline, but that didn't happen.

          Strange.

I'm not really sure what a heavily penalized, decent tackle in the last year of his contract would have fetched in a trade.

Besides... even with his flaws I think he was more valuable to us in 2009 by letting Smith develop.

Stats Inc has the number at seven penalties for 50 yards, so I'm guessing three of those penalties that Sando listed were declined. That's fine; I imagine he was consistent with that and listed what they were actually penalized for, not just what was accepted.

I haven't seen anything from Barron in 2009 that has made me change my mind about moving on without him in 2010. If the Rams think he'll be sought after, they could try a tag-and-trade and see what they get in return. But I don't think his lack of discipline and inconsistent effort should be a part of this team's future.

Seems like most of us agree, move Smith over and go from there into the future .

I am excited for next year already because I know good things are coming.

hopefully he keeps those penalties down for the rest of the year and finishes strong to keep his trade value relevant..he's a more than capable starting lt regardless of his issues, we should be able to get at least a 3rd or so for him.

i dont think he has any trade value at the moment because he is going to be a free agent at the end of the season, and i doubt if we tagged him anyone would bother giving anything up for him

Should we be concerned about giving up on a guy that has started 68 of 70 games to an unproven rookie that appears to be injury prone?

Smith has only started 5 of 8 games and given up 2 sacks. Durability and protection issues, so far.

Barron has started all 10 games and given up 3.5 sacks.

As of today, Smith is no Jake Long. Long has started all 26 games with miami and given up 6.5 sacks in those 26 games.

I guess Smith is the future, but so far, the future does not look so bright.

seriously, we are in week 12 of Smith's rookie season and you are judging him already? Saying his future doesnt look bright? You have completely ignored how superior Smith is in the run game compared to Barron as well.

And you say he is injury prone because he got injured? That doesnt mean he is prone to injuries, it could be he is just unlucky

As what? A right Tackle. If he started this year at left, then I would agree.

he's still a quality tackle, he might not be pro bowl but not everyone is. take a look at mediocre ot's getting huge contracts all over the league the last few years. as far as being a free agent, at this point it looks like next year will go uncapped and all those guys will have to wait another year before they are free agents.

When the Rams run, they clearly run over the right side of the line more often than over the left side of the line. Barron, while not giving up a lot of sacks, does not get a great push in the passing game either -- I wonder what his number of QB hits and pressures is relative to everyone else on the line. Maybe he'll get it together somewhere else, but his passion still doesn't seem to be in it for me...see ya.

And I'd be happy to show Incognito the door too.
