  • My Conversation with Michael Lombardi

This is from his remarks about Jackson gaining all his yds in garbage time so I've been taking him to task on it.

    Michael,

You made a comment to Steve Wyche last night on NFL Network that Steven Jackson gains most of his yards in garbage time when the score doesn’t matter. This is absolutely untrue and a little research on your part would have been nice. While I don’t think Jackson should get MVP he sure deserves the mention. He has zero help from his team and the opponents know he is running the ball. I went and looked at the Rams games and they have been blown out 5 times. In those 5 games that were out of reach Jackson only rushed for a total of 76 yards in the 4th quarter. That doesn’t exactly back up our statement. On top of that when teams are down big don’t they usually pass the ball more to try and get back in the game? I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything like that it's just troubling to hear people say this about Jackson when there is no data to back it up. Jackson in my opinion is the most complete back in the NFL. He puts up great numbers without any talent around him. Please give the guy some respect and don't make false statements like that when it's just flat out wrong.

    Here is his first response.

    Here is his breakdown

    1st Half - 126 553 4.4 58 1 2 2 19 15.1 10 21 15
    2nd Half/OT - 112 567 5.1 48 3 0 0 26 23.2 7 14 17
    Last 2 Min - 18 94 5.2 25 3 0 0 6 33.3 1 3 3
    1st Qtr - 57 226 4.0 30 0 1 1 7 12.3 3 4 6
    2nd Qtr - 69 327 4.7 58 1 1 1 12 17.4 7 17 9
    3rd Qtr - 63 333 5.3 48 0 0 0 14 22.2 3 8 11
    4th Qtr - 49 234 4.8 25 3 0 0 12 24.5 4 6 6

1/2 of his yards have come in the second half and his mist productive quarter is the third. Is this research meet your statisifaction?

I love the player, but the team stinks and he becomes insignificant...

    thanks for watching

    Michael,

I'm not going to get into a pissing match but he has only gained 76 yds in the 4th qtr of games the Rams are getting blown out in. The Rams have not been blown out in every game this year. He also is a big back and does tend to wear on defenses in the second half. Just because half his yds come in the second half doesnt mean the yds are in garbage time. In the 1st Seattle game the Rams were down 28-0 in the 3rd qtr Jackson gained a whopping 30 yds in the entire 2nd half. In the Packers game the Rams were only down 23-17 at the end of the 3rd qtr hardly any garbage time in that game. In the 35-0 drubbing against the Niners the Rams were down 21 nothing at the end of the 3rd qtr Jackson gained another whopping 30 yds in the second half. In the Minnesota game Jackson gained 34 yds in the entire second half. In the Colts game he gained 108 yds in the second half. So 202 of Jackson's 1120 have come in garbage time as you called it. Not really most of his yds as you stated on NFL network. Do you go over Petersons garbage yards like you do Jackson's? Afterall when your up big in games teams tend to run more so I wonder how many garbage yds Peterson has gained this year? Peterson has gained 329 yds in the second half of games the Vikings were blowing out the opponent. Way more garbage yds than Jackson and on a far better team which makes Jackson look even better. Jackson is doing it alone while Peterson had Brett favre and company to help him out. So not sure your line of thinking on this is correct, its ok to be wrong just hard to admit it.

Thats the entire conversation so far.

Maybe I'm not as smart as Lombardi, but shouldn't this make Jackson SIGNIFICANT?? The fact that the Rams do stink and are one-dimensional, with defenses keying on him every play he's in, makes what he does almost unbelievable. Lombardi just doesn't get it.

Great work by the way rammiser.

I am seriously dying laughing at the rebuttal that half of Jackson's yards coming in the 2nd half supports his claim.

Imagine that...a player getting half his yards in the first half of the game and the other half his yards in the second half of the game. This is unusual how?

wow! it's like the game is divided up evenly into four quarters, or two halves! the team must be on to this, because jackson's yardage is divided up the same way! coincidence...or conspiracy? Do the Rams know something we don't?!

Rammiser, great challenge to this guy, facts are friendly. SJ39 is most certainly significant on a lousy team. I would be surprised if this clown responds back....

Generally if a team is losing big, it's the QB who's yards are marginalized, not a RB. Besides, Jackson appears to be wearing out in the second half of games lately.

I don't recall a lot of running plays on 3rd and long this year like we've had in previous years. Under those situations, RBs can get some easy yards. It's not overly difficult to get 10 yards rushing when it's 3rd and 20.

I'm done talking to this doofus, here is his final response.

"I like Jackson and respect his game. I am sure we can agree to disagree...when a team is running out the clock for a win is a lot different and I do not cosider that garbage yards."

So when a team is up big and racking up rushing yds its not garbage time but when a team is down big and gets some rushing yds it is garbage yds? What a complete bafoon this guy is. Talk about walking around with rose colored glasses on.

Rule No. 1: Sportswriters will NEVER admit that they were wrong.

Lombardi must have been watching a different season that I have. First of all, the Rams have been in several games that they lost well into the 4th Quarter (Washington, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Seattle, Arizona). More importantly, as many have pointed out, about half of his yards have been in the first half.

But hey... why interrupt a nice biased rant with facts?

Yep, too much ego and too much arrogance. With condescending comments like "does this research meet your satisfaction?" and "thanks for watching", you can add immature and unprofessional as well.

I have been reading a forum for the St. Louis RAMS, and I simply cannot believe some of the things you have written regarding Steven Jackson. Do you have an ax to grind against the RAMS or St. Louis? Do you say absolutely stupid things just to make a statement? So a running-back that gains yards by running out the clock somehow is better statistically than a running-back that gains yards as the only substantial offense that the team has? Boy, you have it figured out, and everyone else that watches football doesn’t have a clue. Must be that last name of yours that makes you so knowledgeable.

It is a good thing that I don’t waste my time watching any show that you are on. I might lose a few points on my IQ rating.

I think we should just forward the emails to Steven Jackson and see what Mike has to say then.
