  • Marc Bulger has reportedly cleaned out his locker

This is according to Howard Balzer's Twitter, where he has simply said "Marc Bulger cleaned out his locker at Rams Park"

    Report from Rotoworld:
Howard Balzer of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat reports that Marc Bulger has cleaned out his locker at Rams Park.

Bulger anticipates being released, and the Rams may not even waste time trying to get a sixth- or seventh-round pick for him via trade. The 33-year-old is due an $8.5 million salary in 2010, so no team was going to give up anything for him anyway. Bulger's formal release could come very shortly

Makes sense. We're going into a no-cap season so now is the time to take the hit and unload him, although it would have been nice to get some draft picks for him, even 6th and 7th round ones.

It would have been nice, but i doubt any team would want to take on that 8 million salary for a player who has been banged up the last few seasons, even in an uncapped year.

I think Bulger would be a fine stopgap until a younger quarterback could take over, but being able to unload his contract in an uncapped year may be too tempting for this organization to pass up. We'll see what happens.

Hmmm ... been a long time since we had to make qb decisions. I'm kinda indifferent on this one. Marc's a good qb, just maybe not here. Time for someone new (please don't let it be Vick!) ;)

Hey Red! Good to see ya on here. Hope things are going great!
If a team won their division seven straight times, that would be a NFL record. Now add on that team did it with seven different QB's in seven straight years, that record is unbeatable. To do that feat, you must of had a great Defense. Jack Youngblood was the captain of that defense.

This will lead to an interesting offseason, especially with the lack of QB options in free agency. I always considered Bulger to be a good stop gap, especially while a QB developed. It would have allowed us to draft a QB later in the draft. But if there isnt a decent veteran QB available the Rams may have to draft a more NFL ready QB, maybe in the first round of the draft.

We will regret this I bet, I would at least let him battle for the starting job with another QB, I mean look at the QB's available on the FA market, no one comes close to Bulger....

I agree Bulger should be kept on to battle for the starting position or at least try and trade him. However I suspect this is more of a money thing than anything else.

I think he's done all he can in STL. He just didn't have the weapons or the mobility to make it work anymore. I think it's a good move for both sides. Wish him well.

Re: Marc Bulger has reportedly cleaned out his locker

One of the most unfairly maligned players in the history of the organization. I am not saying bulger is a HOF qb, but if you go look at his numbers at the point he signed the big contract, they were absolutely fantastic. As the weapons and offensive line around him collapsed, so did he. I think he would be a terrific qb in a scenario where he gets protection and has some functioning wide receivers.

It never ceased to amaze me on this board how many people blamed bulger when he had no time to throw and no wide receivers of any real value. People took the timing routes of holt and bruce for granted. IT takes years to develop that kind of timing. Young receivers may be talented (which in the rams case is often a leap in faith) but in the last three years there has essentially been no continuity at the position and that just makes it even harder on the qb.

Typical reaction on an INT. The qb stinks. Often the case-receivers not in the right place at the right time.

The qb is like the president. He gets too much credit when the team wins and too much blame when the team loses. To assume that bulger went from an elite qb to a terrible one within a year or two just makes no sense. What did happen was that the rams went from a decent/good team to a terrible one very quickly as their offensive line collapsed and their receivers got old and left and bennett turned out to be a huge bust.

My question would be, ok what's the short term plan? Boller and Null are not the answer. Who is?

It would have also have been nice to have his replacement under contract before we cut him.

Unless, of course, we are going to be idiots and trade for Vick.

Well, this speaks volumes that someone is coming in. The only chatter has been about Vick. What about Pennington? Or McNabb?

I'm sure there will be more info to follow, but cleaning out his locker is a pretty clear sign. I'm wondering if there was any talk of re-working his contract. I would like to see him stay, but there is no way he can come back without making changes as far as salary. That said, the Rams are still going to have to pony up for whoever does come in. It's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out.
