  • Rams claim TE Derek Fine on waivers

The St. Louis Rams were awarded tight end Derek Fine on waivers Wednesday, following Fine’s release by the Buffalo Bills. Cleveland and Jacksonville also put in claims on Fine, a fourth-round pick by the Bills out of Kansas in 2008.

Fine, 6-3, 250, played in 19 games with 11 starts over the ‘08 and ‘09 seasons, and has NFL career stats of 19 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown. Injuries slowed him with Buffalo; he missed six games as a rookie in ‘08 with a thumb injury and was placed on the injured reserve list last Nov. 18 with a knee injury.

With veteran Randy McMichael scheduled for unrestricted free agency and unlikely to return to St. Louis, the Rams are looking for options at tight end. Blocking specialist Billy Bajema returns in 2010 and Daniel Fells is scheduled for restricted free agency. Fine is viewed more as an H-back/receiving tight end.
If i remember correctly, Fine was Buffalo's leading receiver on the season prior to his injury

Buffalo's leading receiver prior to his injury ?

He has career totals of 19 catches for 158 yards over two seasons. We aren't exactly getting Tony Gonzalez here.

I'm just hoping this was a clean transaction and we don't inherit any more fines from this move.

Even if they picked up Klop, our pickup is Fine with me.

Besides, I think we're doing Fine as far as offseason moves are concerned

Will the Rams ever embrace the TE position?
                                by AvengerRam_old
In its long history, the Rams have had great players at virtually all the "skill positions" on offense. At RB, they have had a Hall of Famer (Eric Dickerson) two future HOFs (Jerome Bettis, Marshall Faulk) and several other 1,000 yard backs (Lawrence McCutchen, Wendell Tyler, Steven Jackson, etc.). At WR, the team has two HOFs (Elroy Hirsh, Tom Fears) three potential HOFs (Henry Ellard, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt) and several other notables (Jack Snow, Ron Jessie, Harold Jackson, Flipper Anderson). Even at QB, the Rams have two HOFs (Bob Waterfield, Norm Van Brocklin) and two league MVPs (Roman Gabriel, Kurt Warner).

Then, you get to TE. The Rams have never had a great TE. Probably their best was Pete Holohan, who in his brief tenure with the Rams, had the only really good year for a TE in 1988 (59 receptions, 640 yards, 3 TDs).

Today, the TE position has become more important than ever. Players like Antonio Gates, Jeremy Shockey, Heath Miller, Randy McMichael and Alge Crumpler have become key targets and game changers.

While defense remains the No. 1 priority for this offseason, maybe the time has come for the Rams to finally look at the TE position as a key.

Certainly, Marc Bulger would benefit from having a large target who can go over the middle and provide a real threat in the Red Zone. Also, by tying up a safety in coverage, a good TE would open things up even more for Holt, Bruce, Curtis and McDonald.

This year's draft seems to be pretty deep at the TE position. Once the Rams have addressed the key needs on defense, the TE position should be high on the list.

                                Finally.

Per my 15 year old daughter, who follows myles simmons rams report on twitter, Hemingway has a broken fibula. Depending on the results of surgery, he is out anywhere from 3-4 months to 6-8 weeks. My bet is he is gone for the year. Wonder if this means we carry another receiver (ie spruce) or it opens the door for harkey.

I would like to see LeBron in a Rams uniform. At 6' 9" and 265, i think he would be a tremendous situational pass rusher.

                                Kyle Rudolph TE
                                by Bing69
I was reading an interesting article saying how if Kyle Rudoplh was sitting there in the 2nd round when the Rams pick they should take him. He has the elite skills you look for in that position, and some believe he is a better receiving target than Gresham and Pettigrew taken in previous years. With Illinois Mike injury concern unclear (he may or may not be able to complete a full season), Onobun still raw and developing, Bajema just a solid team player, and Fells inconsistency (we could also loose him in FA) it might not be such a bad idea.

I know there are other ways to go with this pick, but he might just be the BPA at that stage. We have managed to get 2 first round talents in the 2nd the last 2 years (J-Lau and Saffold) and it would certainly make the offense more threatening. Having Rudoplh, Big mike, Bajema / Onobun would be a nice trio. Add to the fact if we get Rice , or V-Jax, or Julio Jones our offense would be looking pretty sweet.

I personally have no problem with the pick if it happens, but we dont know whos coming and going in FA.

Whats the general thought on Rudoplh from you guys??
