The St. Louis Rams were awarded tight end Derek Fine on waivers Wednesday, following Fine’s release by the Buffalo Bills. Cleveland and Jacksonville also put in claims on Fine, a fourth-round pick by the Bills out of Kansas in 2008.
Fine, 6-3, 250, played in 19 games with 11 starts over the ‘08 and ‘09 seasons, and has NFL career stats of 19 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown. Injuries slowed him with Buffalo; he missed six games as a rookie in ‘08 with a thumb injury and was placed on the injured reserve list last Nov. 18 with a knee injury.
With veteran Randy McMichael scheduled for unrestricted free agency and unlikely to return to St. Louis, the Rams are looking for options at tight end. Blocking specialist Billy Bajema returns in 2010 and Daniel Fells is scheduled for restricted free agency. Fine is viewed more as an H-back/receiving tight end.
