  • Pierce would be more than happy to reunite w/ spags

    per 101 espn,

Pierce basically said he would like to reunite with spags and would make the transition to OLB.

I know he's old and coming back from an injury but as of right now, ill take any kind of upgrade that will help as long as it doesn't cost too much....thoughts?

I dont like it. If spags things he can play OLB of some kind then I think spags will bring him in. But I doubt that spags will bring in anyone that will somehow hinder Jlau's development.

I'm not hopeful of taking a 32 year old middle linebacker who is past his prime and trying to convert him to an outside position. Pierce is also coming off an injury plagued 2009 season in which he played poorly BEFORE the injury.

Spags and Devaney have thus far resisted the temptation of plugging in veterans released by other teams. I don't think that will change in this instance.

He'd have to play SLB, but as his skills have deteriorated he has trouble getting off blocks and CAN'T COVER FOR SQUAT! This would be a mistake.

Well think about it Pierce is taking a shot in the dark and wanting to hopefully use old connections to be picked up and continue to play... I dont blame him at all.. I think he'd be a upgrade over Paris Lenon and Chris Chamberlain at WLB:

            Chamberlain: Tackles 15 Assist 4 Sack 0 Fumbles 0
            Lenon: Tackles 35 Assist 7 Sack 0 Fumbles 3

            Totals: Tackles 50 Assist 12 Sack 4 Fumbles 3

Antonio Pierce: Tackles 40 Assist 15 Sack 0 Fumbles 1

He only played 8 1/2 games last year to compared to the other two guys 16.
I think i'd rather have Antonio play our WeakSide LB than thos two other guys also I think he brings other intangibiles that alot of you can't see past his age:
            -Accountability in the locker room
            -Success
-A vocal leader which is what we need
-Experience ( His first three years of his career at the Redskins he played WLB and SLB) So he's a LB first and foremost and can play any LB spot not just the middle LB spot.
-Team player willing to take a a different roll to make a defense successful

IMO I think he has at least 2-3 more decent years left in his career and would help us out considerably towards our goal of being a contender again.

Spags Will Talk with Pierce by Brian Stull

When Antonio Pierce was released last week by the New York Giants, there were two immediate questions that came to mind--(1) is he healthy enough to play and (2) has Steve Spagnuolo already called him.
The answer to question two has been answered--not yet.
Addressing the media yesterday, Spags shared that he had not spoken with Pierce but would be reaching out to him soon. "When I saw it the other day, I meant to text him. I didn't get to do that, but I will. Antonio is a close friend of mine. You get in this business with players, they become close friends. I think the world of him."
Pierce played in only nine games for the Giants last season before a neck injury ended his season. "I know he had the injury last year," said Spagnuolo. "I was sorry to see that. I'll have to visit with him."
The pair worked together in New York, where AP was a captain and manned the middle of Spags defensive unit which won Super Bowl XLII.
But with the Rams now set with James Laurinaitis at that spot, could Pierce be a candidate to move to the weak or strong side??
"I guess all of those situations are possible. I think the health of the player is probably the most important thing. I'd check on that." said Spagnuolo.
If healthy, Pierce brings nine years of experience with nearly 700 tackles and 1 Pro-Bowl.
Pierce's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has posted on Twitter, "His back has improved and he's ready to go!".
Antonio will speak for himself later today, when he's a guest on The Fast Lane at 3:30pm.

He would still make more plays with a broken leg and his arm in a cast than Paris Lenon. I say why not?

Unless that why is a huge pay check...

Well he's about to turn 32 and is coming of a neck / back injury that will linger for a while. Why would you want to sign him if you cut Spoon for being the same age and healthy?

Like C-Mob said, if it takes too much money to bring him in, forget it but if we can sign him at a reasonable price, I say why not(?) as well. If anything he's a more than capable backup and if he can make the transition to OLB, I'm sure he'd play quite well.

A number of reasons: Witherspoon had a lot of money owed to him. We also traded him because we needed a spark on offense and the team felt confident in adding Gibson and I'm assuming felt that getting rid of 'Spoon wouldn't hinder the D too much.

In an uncapped year, money won't matter. However, I wonder how difficult it would be to change from a MLB to an OLB?

Spoon wasn't cut. He was traded for Gibson and a 5th round pick.

Either one Sam or Will... personally I'd leave Vobora at the Sam spot since he was progressing well there and have him play the Will LB spot, of course this is all subject to his monetary demands and if we get a decent LB in the draft..

Has anybody heard that Spags has an option that in the case the team is sold he can opt out of his contract? I am not saying he will since nothing has pointed towards that, just asking if its true.

Did Spags coaching cost the rams some games? Yes but the Rams still wouldn't have made the playoffs with all the injuries. By Spags costing the Rams a few games they will get the 2 pick in the draft. If anything you should be mad they beat the saints or the browns that cost the Rams the number 1 pick over all. Give Spags a break.
