  • D'Marco Farr: Rams QB Marc Bulger has 'no charisma' and 'zero presence'

    USA TODAY THE HUDDLE

1 Recommend D'Marco Farr started on the defensive line for the St. Louis Rams' 1999 Super Bowl team, and now he's a radio analyst for the club, so he knows a thing or two about the inner workings of the franchise.

And he said on NFL Network's NFL Total Access on Tuesday night that the Rams will have a new starting quarterback in 2010 because Marc Bulger lacked the chops to keep the job. Said Farr:

"I think that ship has sailed. I think Marc Bulger has played his last snap for the St. Louis Rams, and I'm confident in saying that. Now there's a guy with all the talent in the world in my opinion. Has the same brain as Kurt Warner; they were trained under the same guy in Mike Martz. But absolutely no charisma. I mean the quarterback position is the guy everyone on the team wants to be. I don't think anyone wants to be Marc Bulger, so they're gonna need a new quarterback coming into 2010, either through free agency or through the draft."

And Farr didn't stop there, adding:

"It's a sad deal because the guy can wing the football. I mean the guy can flat play. But it's just -- he has aboslutely zero presence. Kyle Boller had a bigger presence than Marc Bulger did last season, and Kyle Boller is not half the player Marc Bulger is."

Bulger remains under contract with the team while Boller is an unrestricted free agent.

Farr believes the St. Louis natives want the team to draft Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, but he thinks the Rams should take Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh and find a quarterback in free agency. -- Nate Davis

I'm w/ D'Marco, draft Suh, wait for Locker or Mallett or somebody ...

    Just sayin'
If a team won their division seven straight times, that would be a NFL record. Now add on that team did it with seven different QB's in seven straight years, that record is unbeatable. To do that feat, you must of had a great Defense. Jack Youngblood was the captain of that defense.

I can name numerous qb's who were not charismatic (Aikman for starters) or even say much that have won Superbowls. Why people think this is a big deal is beyond me. Bulger's presence as Farr put it has been beaten out of him the last three years. Barry Sanders was one of the most boring and quiet people on the planet yet he was the leader of the Lions when he played there.

One thing Farr is right about is that Bulger is not going to be the Rams qb next year. I don't think it's because he isnt charismatic either.

Yeah, you're right. Probably won't be picking that high. ;)

Maybe we can bring someone in via free agency. As opposed as I was to the idea of Vick being the qb, after watching people break down what he could do for our running game .... maybe I'm not totally against it anymore. Or maybe Campbell. Don't know what's happened to him over in D.C. but he was a helluva qb at Auburn. Maybe he just needs a change of scenery ala Kurt ... and Marc? What I'm TRYING to say is take Suh and I'll make do w/ whoever is at qb for another year.

          Did someone say Donovan?

Farr should go interview the current Rams players to hear the opinions of other players and he'd should be surprised to hear what they say. Bulger plays with raw, undeveloped WRs, a recovering O-line, and a broken tibia.. and to top it all off, he doesn't make any complaints about it. I'd give him a lot of respect for that.

              Totally agree!

Bulger hasn't had a decent team in years and when he did (years ago), he did very well. That's why we were all excited about our post-GSOT offense in that it still had punch players. Big Bulger contract, etc. But things changed too much primarily and firstly due to injuries. And the rest is recent Rams history.

Enter 2010. Some of us are now wondering, perhaps half-justified... if Marc is damaged goods. :ram:

D'Marco is respected as a former Ram and his opinion is true to some extent. Sure, MB is definitely not an exciting, charismatic, exhuberant leader. Nor was Unitas (no, I'm not comparing them in terms of stats / winning). Unitas, the legend, was a stern, stone face QB; highly effective and successful BTW. But talk about presence!

For the most part, I think Bulger's presence has been taken away by team circumstance of the past few years. Can he regain his confidence with the Rams? That's what is being pondered by the Rams organization and fans. Stay tuned.

As "broken" as we are at QB, I must hope for Suh at #1. A game-changing talent like that can't be passed up in favor of a "broken" Rookie at QB.

You're right D'Marco, Bulger can disappear on the field. It that regard, he is not that unlike you during your entire Rams career.

I like D'Marco Farr, but while "charisa" might be a good trait to make the pages of People magazine, it certainly isn't necessary to make a good NFL quarterback.

And what Free Agent QB does Farr want us to pick up? Chad Pennington? Charlie Batch? Chris Redman? David Carr? Rex Grossman? Joey Harrington?

Thats the cream of the crop of the free agent QBs this season. If you ask me, im keeping Bulger

Farr is right: The Marc Bulger era in St. Louis is over. Having him back would mean him willingly taking a significant pay cut AND facing the prospect of not starting or warming the seat for another guy who will take over. I doubt Marc Bulger would lend himself to that.

For a litany of reasons which have been discussed endlessly on this forum, Bulger hasn't been successful the past three seasons. Some of the reasons involve his surrounding cast, which has been subpar. His inability to stay healthy is another. Some of his struggles are his fault. He didn't play well when Steven Jackson was tearing it up and the o-line was improved. Regardless, it's time the Bulger era ended. He gave us some good seasons and I'm thankful for that. But thinking he's gonna' miraculously return to form is wishful thinking at best and complete folly at worst. A change of scenery is best for both Bulger and the Rams.

Obviously the $64,000 question is who do we replace him with. As I've said previously, if you can identify a guy in the draft who you think can possibly play for us for the next 10 years, you grab him. Perform your due diligence and do your homework, because if you don't get it right, not only will heads roll but the franchise will be set back even further.

Farr is entitled to his opinion, but you really can't tell what kind of charisma a person has from watching them play on the field. If you could, then in my opinion no player in the history of the NFL had less charisma than Roger Staubach, who was always low key on the field.

But hey, its easy to pile on a team with the Rams recent record, so why bother getting all the facts before doing so?
