  • Long or Short Term Success?

I would think the answer is obvious but honestly the way some people post around here I'm not sure.

    Would you rather have...

    A) Build through the draft and 2 to 3 years from now be Super Bowl contenders with the ability to be Super Bowl contenders for several years.

    or

    B) Buy it now. I want it now. I don't care if we slip back into mediocrity for several years after it. Get me to the Super Bowl NOW!

    or

    C) Neither. I hope we keep replacing the head coach every two years because I want us to be in a constant state of rebuilding. I love talking about how bad we are.

You didnt include the Dan Snyder approach. Buy everything you can but still manage to be bad every year.

Obviously setting ourself up for long term success is the prudent approach and the way the Rams are clearly trying to do business. At the same time, If I hear one more person tell me to be patient, I'm gonna' rip their lips off. WE'VE BEEN PATIENT FOR FIVE YEARS NOW. It's time to start showing some dividends without listening to a litany or reasons as to why it can't happen. IT CAN HAPPEN. It's been done before. There is no reason to think that we can't be successful if we draft smart and make intelligent personnel decisions and at the same time resist the temptation of overspending for free agents.

What are you talking about? we've been patient for three years not five. 2006 was our last season close to winning ( 8-8) so this is actually the fourth year.

a bit of both, draft for long term, sign FA for long term, but sign an FA or 2 to help our coaching staff keep their jobs. I dont want to be starting again in 2 years time. We could survive one single fan appeaser and team helper.

What are YOU talking about?? In 2006, we were 8-8 only because we won our last three games of the year. That's a ***tty season in my opinion, (although compared to the last three years it probably seems like its wonderful).

The point is pretty simple: Screw patience. Draft properly, mix in a solid veteran player or two and get busy winning.

What does it matter that the games were at the end of the season? Still part of the season arent they?

Can't believe you're making an argument of this. We've sucked for 4 years- 2006 included - PERIOD. In the past 20 years we've had about 6 years of good football. We deserve a winner, not endless blather about how we need to continue to be patient. Enough is enough.

So you want one winning season and then a return to mediocrity? Whats the point?

Read my original post again. Apparently, in your haste to take issue with what was said, you didn't bother to read what was in fact a clear and logical stance on this issue. Nowhere have I EVER advocated a mass signing of expensive free agents to bring us out of this cesspool we're in. What I've CLEARLY STATED is that a smart draft coupled with key signings here and there gives us the chance to be respectable and competitive. This can happen quickly, as other teams in recent history have demonstrated. This is why i take issue with hearing "be patient" every freakin' year as the fan base is resigned to winning 2 or 3 games.

I voted long term success....but if we have short-term success whats to say we still cant build and replenish through draft and FA. If we have short-term success it means some young players must have stepped up and done something already

I know people have been saying be patient for 5 years or so, but the thing is there was a massive change in the front office after the fourth year. We are saying be patient now because its a new regime. Yes its not the fans fault that Shaw, Zygmunt, Martz, Linehan and Haslett ruined this team with poor free agents and bad draft choices, but its not the fault of Spags and Devaney either

First I think that the poll question is stupid. It seems to me that you feel if that if you get a quality player in FA, that you cannot draft well. Explain why you cannot do both? Good teams do. Second for those of you that feel like we can be successful in 3yrs at 8-8 and that it is ok, well you are wrong. Successful is not 8-8. 8-8 is not a winning season, so how can you consider it a success? If you think it is ok to wait 4yrs for a coach to get a team to 8-8, average at best, still not a winner, well then I don't think that you (I will be polite) veiw things like most NFL fans.
