  • Mood of Rams Fans: Is Bernie Right or Wrong?

Bernie seems to think that he knows what Rams fans are thinking. Here's his most recent comment:

So the Rams’ ownership saga gets crazier and more confusing by the day, which only creates distraction and frustration at a time when Rams fans would like to be in a happier mood, looking forward to this week’s NFL Draft. By the time this nasty ownership mess is sorted out, there may be about 248 Rams fans left in St. Louis.
So, is Bernie right? Are fans getting so frustrated that they are going to abandon the team? Or is Bernie projecting his own feelings on the Rams fan base?

He's right. I'm frustrated and have nearly had enough.

He's wrong. The ownership issue is a concern, but I'm happily focused on the draft.

I saw this on Rams Gab and was shocked that Jeff Roman agreed with him (or was being sarcasting..). Hopefully people aren't so weak and emotional that because a little drama is added to the ownership saga that they will freak out and abandon their team. What has this have to do with the on the field product in the short term anyway?

What Bernie does not get is that the people who frequent the PD boards do NOT represent Rams fans as a whole. Rather, the PD seems to primarily draw the over-the-top whiners of the Rams fan base.

For those of us who have followed the team for decades, the current ownership issue is merely a bump in the road. It will get sorted out, and the Rams may very well be in better shape as a franchise when it does.

You have no idea what the fans in STL feel. From talking to friends of mine back home in STL and SEMO, every one of them are just about sick of it. Bernie may not necessarily be talking to the whole Rams Nation but I guarantee he is speaking for the majority of the local fan base.

That's still anecdotal. I'm more interested in hearing what each Clan member is feeling.

Drama queens are freaking out. Every other fan is waiting for concrete facts.

Jim Thomas was on the radio yesterday on the drive home and Farr asked if the players cared - Thomas said he didn't think so but hadn't talked to many. Farr said as a player he didn't care who was writing his checks.

As a fan why should I really care? I guess if that's all I had to obsess about I'd find something to freak out about. I know ONE fan in St. Louis that is really worried and he's a drama queen. Everyone else is waiting because we realize this could take 6 months to be settled and even then you wont know the realities.

As someone who lives in the area...

I'm not sick of the ownership situation, I'm sick of the "OMG THE RAMS ARE MOVIN BACK TO LA!!!!!1111111" situation. I'm sick of hearing it from other people and I'm sick of hearing it from sports writers who all seem to think it's somehow funny to screw with local fans like that.

The ownership issue vexes me only in regards to Chippy Boy zipping the purse strings tight. However, two can play at that game.

Re: Mood of Rams Fans: Is Bernie Right or Wrong?

I'm more worried about how a 1-15 team is supposed to improve with almost no moves in FA, a minority owner that is trying to make the sale more difficult and a FO that is willing to trade the 1rst OA pick for a song (rumor that I hope is crap). I'm starting to doubt the so called PLAN we have for turning this thing around. If the draft plays out like the off season and regular season then I will be moving on, after 15 years of this crap I would like a team to at least ACT like it has an interest in winning.

Ask me this question again four weeks into next season. I voted he's wrong, for now.

...is he kidding? The simple fact that Georgia or any of her siblings will not be in charge (soon) makes this season the most interesting, and exciting in many, many, years.

This franchise can only go up.

I'm very frustrated with the team but could care less about the ownership issues. I'm more mad that we're worse right now than we were last year.

Not a week ago, Bernie devoted an entire article to what he described as "anarchy" and "a helter-skelter mess" at Rams Park.

This is the same "helter-skelter" organization has managed to resign a number of RFAs and exclusive rights players, restructured Marshall Faulk's contract to clear needed cap space, signed FA Dexter Coakley within a day of his release by the Cowboys, and is apparently currently actively pursuing other free agents including Chris Claiborne.

Here's the problem with this. We, as fans, have very limited access to information. We therefore rely on a limited number of local sportswriters, who have greater access, to provide us with some insight.

Why should we have to rely upon someone like Bernie who (1) clearly has disdain for Martz and the front office, and (2) takes every opportunity to place a negative spin on few fact he knows or, more often, thinks he knows.

Don't think that this does not go unnoticed, either. I'll bet that Martz and others are aware of Bernie's approach, and probably avoid him more and more because of it. Bernie then gets annoyed (don't forget, the guy is so defensive he feels the need to snipe at anyone who takes a shot at him on his message board, rather than simply ignoring the trolls), and becomes more negative and critical. Its a vicious circle.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want some total "homer" to blow sunshine up our posteriors about everything, but Bernie clearly has an agenda that renders him useless as a conduit of information to Ram fans.

Seems like an obvious point, but I think it needs to be hammered in every once in a while.

This is a quote from a Bernie article dated 1/4/09:

After this, Bernie said little about the coaching search until last Saturday when he started discussing the imminent hiring of Jason Garrett.

The point here is that, despite their access to sources, when it comes to speculating and interpreting "signals," sportswriters often have no more insight then the average fan. They are guided by opinions, biases and ego, just like fans are.

Of course, if you say that to Bernie on his message board, don't expect to be around very long....

They don't like any of the FAs that much.

They sort of liked Traylor but he signed back with Miami.

I was told "the guys we already have must get better, like Indianapolis did."

They like Carriker and think he can play DE or DT.

Maybe they pick up one of these DTs late in FA when the price is lower.

                                I really don't know.
