And since I'm new here, what type of running back would best complement SJ? Good receiver/runner? Good at running in traffic for short yardage? Scatback?

My preference would be a speed guy - scatback would be great, but if Jackson were to go down, we'd need more of a workhorse type. Maybe Spags will weigh in on this thread ..

yes I think we are all in favor of Westbrook. only concern is how he holds up on artificial turf. at any rate, i believe we are waiting on him. he probably would prefer playing for a team that has playoff possibilities and grass turf.

I remember all of us wanting Bennett, I wonder if he's got anything left, he's been pretty quiet...

Of the guys we can actually get, if Betts recovers I think he's worth a look. I also don't think it would hurt to bring Wynn in and see what he can actually do. Westbrook would be fine with me, but he's got to be healthy enough to contribute.

Didn't know Betts was a free agent. The last time I heard of him, he was playing pretty well. Well enough to get a decent contract extension anyway.

He would certainly be worth a look.

Well he tore up his knee pretty good, and that was pretty late in the season, probably not realistic that he'll be ready to go by training camp.

                    I'd have to say:
                    Ronnie Brown
                    Justin Fargas
                    Jamal Lewis
                    Pierre Thomas
                    Brian Westbrook
Would all be great options at a number 2 RB. I'm SURPRISED Westbrook is the only one that is generating any interest by us...

Did you check to see how many fo those guys were RESTRICED FAs? Pierre and Ronnie would both be worth a look if they weren't restricted. Fargas is old and not that appealing, same with Lewis.

ya good point didn't think of that, Could almost bet my house that both are restricted, I think Lewis would be servicable tho same with Fargas, better than Darby any day of the week!

ya i doubt any of the rfa's will come cheap. of the ufa's, top 3 names that jumped out at me were Lewis, Westbrook, & Fargas.

i've always liked Lewis, but the tank may be empty. he'd be a nice backup workhorse, kinda like Stephen Davis when Rams had him for a year, but with better knees.

                          Westbrook, check.

Fargas may be 30, but Raiders didn't run him much his first few years. Bralidore may disagree, but i think he'd work out fine as a SJ backup if healthy. Guess it all depends where he went wrong on his physical. Raiders say he failed, he says he didn't... hopefully the Rams pick up Westbrook and it'll be a discussion we don't need to have

What receivers are free agents this year(besides Curtis and McDonald of course). If we lose both we definetly need to acquire a third receiver. I know Linehan doesn't use a ton of three receiver sets but if Isaac or Tory are injured we are going to need a solid #3 to fill in and I would prefer not to draft a receiver until at least round 3. I'm pretty sure Donte Stallworth is a free agent but he might be out of our price range. Not to mention the fact he will probably want to start. Can anybody give me a list? So at least I know who we may be looking at.

                                Top Quarterbacks

                                Kurt Warner, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
The former MVP and Super Bowl winner is having a resurgent season in Arizona. He has 3,155 yards passing through ten games, having thrown 20 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. He has also posted a passer rating of 105.5. His yardage total is second in all of the NFL, while his touchdown total is second in the league and the passer rating is easily tops in the game. Warner will be looking for an extension from the team shortly, but if both sides can’t agree to a deal, Warner will still earn good money on the market even for an older player.

Matt Cassel, UFA, New England Patriots
While he was inconsistent for a majority of the season, Cassel has come on strong the past couple of weeks. It appears as though he has adjusted to being a starter. He has reached the 400-yard passing mark the past two games and tallied six touchdowns to just one interception in that time. His passer rating for the season is 90.5 and he has a decent touchdown to interception ratio for a first time starter. Cassel may continue being a backup in New England, but if he keeps playing as well as he has lately, a team may risk luring him away in hopes he can be a legitimate starter.

Jeff Garcia, UFA, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Garcia could retire at season’s end given that he is nearing forty years of age, but many expected he would have hung up his cleats by now already. The veteran just keeps going and is playing to keep his team in games. He had a strong showing in Philadelphia in ’06 and last season the veteran passer threw for over 2,400 yards and 13 touchdowns in 13 games. This season, he has thrown for just over 1,600 yards and only five touchdowns in seven games, but he has only three total turnovers. He may be asked to stick around somewhere in the league for another season.

                                Rex Grossman, UFA, Chicago Bears
With all of the criticism that Grossman has had to face, he did lead a Bears team that reached a Super Bowl in ’06. During that season he threw for over 3,100 yards and 23 touchdowns; he also turned the ball over 25 times. Grossman lost his starting role to Kyle Orton this season and has thrown just 62 passes, completing only 32 and having a pair of touchdowns and picks. Grossman appears headed towards being a career backup.

                                Kyle Boller, UFA, Baltimore Ravens
Boller has never lived up to the hype that came with him when he was placed on the injured reserve this season. In five seasons of earning sporadic playing time, Boller has thrown more touchdowns than picks just twice. The presence of Joe Flacco and Troy Smith almost guarantee that Boller will be gone after the season, and it is hard to imagine that he’ll be given a shot at starting anywhere. Like Grossman, he seems destined to be a career backup.
